M: Of course. That’s a piece of cake.
(Text 3)
W: I saw you and Pat at the basketball game last weekend.
M: You must be mistaken. We went to Paris for a holiday and just came back yesterday.
(Text 4)
W: What kind of ice cream would you like, chocolate or milk?
M: Neither. Thank you. I like them both but right now all I want is some water.
(Text 5)
W: Excuse me, driver. Are you sure we’re going the right way?
M: You wanted to go to the station, didn’t you?
W: That’s right. The city bus station.
M: Oh, I’m sorry. I thought you said the train station.
(Text 6)
W: I just saw Jack at the bus station. Why is he waiting for a bus?
M: He has to go to a lecture at 10:00 this morning.
W: I know that. But why did he have to wait for a bus? You always go to school by bicycle together, don’t you?
M: That’s right. But his bicycle broke down, and he had it repaired this morning.
(Text 7)
M: Hey, Lisa, wait up! I’ve wanted to have a chance to talk to you.
W: Hi! What’s up?
M: This weekend I’m having a birthday party for Ted. I’d like you to come.
W: I’d love to. When is it?
M: We’re having it this Saturday at 8 o’clock at my house. We’re going to order a pizza and play some games. Then whoever wants to stay longer can hang out and watch a video.
W: It sounds like a lot of fun. But now that I think about it, I promised I would do something with Jane Saturday night.
M: Well, why don’t you bring her along? It would be fun. Ted would really like that. I’m sure.
W: Really? That would be great. OK, I’ll ask Jane to come along. What can I bring?

M: What do you think of this apartment?
W: It’s not very good. The bedroom is a little small for us.
M: It should be enough for our needs, I think.
W: And there’s no hot water after ten at night. Sometimes I like to have a shower before going to bed.
M: That’s true. But I love the living room. It’s large and filled with sunshine.
W: I like the kitchen best. It’s new.
M: Look! From here we can get a view of the park.
W: Oh, the view is great. But that bedroom is small. We can’t get all of our things in it.
M: Maybe we can get some new furniture.
W: I agree.
(Text 9)
M: This is Tom. May I speak to Miss Li?
W: Tom? Glad to hear your voice.
M: Miss Li, I wonder if the result of the last English exam has come out. You know I do well in English, but I was so careless that I made many mistakes this time. Now I’m really stressed out.
W: Just take it easy, Tom! The result hasn’t come out yet. As soon as it comes out, I’ll tell you. Maybe you didn’t do so badly.
M: I hope so. What if I get a bad grade? I feel nervous about it.
W: Don’t worry. It doesn’t matter. You know the mistakes you made. Pay more attention next time.
M: Thanks a lot, Miss Li. You always give us much encouragement.
W: I’m glad to hear that. Cheer up.
M: I will. See you next week.
W: Have a nice day! Please give my regards to your parents. See you.
M: Thank you so much.

M: Hello, everyone. I have an announcement to make. As you know, we have more than 30 students from America, England, Canada and France visiting our school. In order to help them enjoy their time here, the Students’ Union has decided to organize a European music week. It will be held the last week of September. You can sing pop songs and play musical instruments, so don’t forget to bring along your musical instrument if you have any. There will also be an interesting music contest. During the competition, the visiting students will sing the first sentence of a song and you will be required to guess where the song comes from and what’s the name of the song. Please come to the Students’ Union office to sign up before September 15th if you want to take part in any of the activities. The music week will be held in the garden to the left of the library. I hope all of you will have a great time. That’s all!

Children are naturally creative, but they need the right environment to help this creativity grow. By giving children enough time, space, and freedom, our workshop can encourage them to think independently, solve problems, and imagine new ideas.
Children often show their creativity through playful problem-solving that involves planning projects, building structures, and creating stories. This happens best in environments where children have the freedom to think for themselves, space to move about, plenty of natural and open-ended materials, and the support of observant, thoughtful adults. During this workshop, we will uncover key elements of outdoor classrooms that uniquely support children’s creativity and learning. Your kids will leave this workshop with a renewed sense of creativity and the tools to:

Amsterdam is well-known for its network of canals (运河), but many may not know that its waterways have become a danger for the cats in the city. They are endangered together by its commonly-seen canals, high walls, and narrow streets.
Now, Amsterdam is trying to build mini wooden staircases (楼梯) leading out of the water and onto the banks to help the cats if they fall in the water. For this project, over 100,000 euros will be spent to build the tiny staircases at various points along its waterways as part of a cat safety drive.
Euro News details that cats accidentally fall into canals when something scares them. While they are able to swim, they quickly run out of energy as the water weighs down their fur (毛).
This creative plan to give cats and other small animals a way out of the city’s canals which can endanger them was developed after 19 cats died in the city’s canals in the last six months. It was presented by Judith Krom of the Party for the Animals. Krom, who has called this a simple move that can prevent animal suffering, says this shows the city’s wish to take responsibility for protecting the lives of animals.
It turns out that the city’s animal welfare chief, Zita Pels, had previously supported this step, but she had put the idea aside because there had not been enough money. Krom, however, found out unused 100,000 euros in her biodiversity budget for wildlife, giving this project the green light.
Today, the city’s Dierenambulance Amsterdam animal welfare organization is on call to provide an ambulance (救护车) service around the clock to help animals in medical need. It has been tasked with working with the city to choose sites where the most accidental cat falls have happened.
28. Why is Amsterdam trying to build staircases along its waterways?
A. To attract tourists. B. To make money.
C. To protect cats. D. To beautify the canals.
29. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 3?
A. To show the weakness of local tourism.
B. To tell the reason for driving cats away.
C. To prove the risk of swimming in canals.
D. To stress the necessity of building staircases.
30. What made Zita Pels fail to take the step?
A. Shortage of money. B. Having little time.
C. Her dislike for the idea. D. Failing to find suitable sites.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. A study on cats. B. A city project.
C. A safe home for animals. D. A travel destination.
D
A study showed when children who were picky (挑剔的) eaters got to choose their own food (school dinners) at lunchtime, they were less picky in what they ate, compared with a packed lunch. This is the first time that lunchtime food behaviors in picky children have been studied outside of the home, and away from family influence.
In the study, picky children were less likely than non-picky eaters to have meat or fish sandwich fillings in packed lunches, and more likely to have fillings such as marmite, peanut butter or cheese spread in packed lunches. They were also less likely to eat fruit or salad in packed lunches. However, when picky children ate school dinners, they did not avoid meat, fish or fruit anymore. They ate different kinds of foods and made more similar choices to those non-picky eaters.
It is well-known that picky children eat fewer vegetables and fruits than others. But they are crucial for children to get the fibre, vitamins and minerals that they require for healthy development and to avoid long-term health problems. Therefore, ways to encourage children to eat more vegetables and fruits are favored.
“Every child is different, and what works for some won’t work for others. We found that school dinners could be a good choice to increase variety (多样化) in the diets of picky teens,” said Dr Caroline Taylor, lead researcher and Associate Professor in Nutrition at the University of Bristol. “We know that most picky children eat enough, but they sometimes don’t have a good balance of foods. It’s important to encourage all children to eat enough fruits and vegetables to help them grow and develop, whether that’s at home or at school.”
Of course, there are many things parents can do to encourage a healthy diet. Whether that is enjoying family meals together, modelling a balanced diet themselves, or allowing children to prepare meals, it all helps.
32. What can we learn about the study from paragraph 1?
A. It is of pioneering value. B. It is led by picky eaters.
C. It focuses on family meals. D. It is against eating at school.
33. What were the picky children likely to do when eating school dinners?
A. Avoid meat, fish or fruit. B. Influence non-picky eaters.
C. Eat a wider variety of foods. D. Enjoy packed lunches as well.
34. What does the underlined word “crucial” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Expensive. B. Important. C. Delicious. D. Meaningless.
35. What does the author try to do in the last paragraph?
A. Make guesses. B. Give a warning. C. Raise questions. D. Offer advice.
