The popularity of Cuju reached its peak (顶峰) during the Song Dynasty. Ordinary people got paid by playing it. Quite a few became “Messis” of that time. Gao Qiu, a character in Water Margin (《水浒传》), was 15 a nobody, but managed to win the favor of Song Huizong by playing Cuju well and became Grand Marshal (太尉).
Cuju began to lose its popularity during the Ming Dynasty. Today, it 16 serves as a tool for cultural exchange. For example, performers took turns to 17 some Cuju skills during the recent Qatar World Cup and some Qatari football players happily joined in. Some football superstars, like Brazil’s Ricardo Kaka, have also tried their “foot” at it.
Perhaps a revival (复兴) of this ancient game is needed, especially when the Chinese football fans are in 18 of a source of pride. After all, the poor performance of Chinese men’s football always lets the fans down.

Mandarin Connects My Children to Their Heritage
Growing up in America as a child of first-generation Chinese immigrants, I was used to straddling (横跨) two worlds. But as I grew older, the Chinese side lost ground, inch by inch. While I happily accepted the bills in red envelopes that adults gave to children for Lunar New Year, I didn’t feel connected to the culture.
Before my children were born, I had already decided that I would teach them Mandarin. I felt that they ought to be able to speak the language of their grandparents, the first language their mother encountered.
Parenting books advised narrating your actions while with your baby, so I started digging out long-buried words: “ball,” “eat,” “sleep,” “play.” However, as this exercise continued, the gaps in my Mandarin became more obvious. One morning, when my daughter asked “What is the word for ‘arm’?” I panicked. Had I already reached the boundaries (边界) of my knowledge?
Luckily, these days the ready availability of Chinese language media—from books to television shows to music—is a much-needed tool to parents like me.
The first time I stepped into the local library in my Bay Area hometown, I was amazed to find a well-stocked (贮藏量多的) Chinese section. The tale of the Monkey King immediately caught my daughter’s imagination.
When I see my son chat with his grandfather in Mandarin or when my daughter insists on fish for Lunar New Year, the time spent reading all those books closely feels well-spent.
My youngest child recited Li Bai’s “________” for the Moon Festival performance at his preschool last fall. For generations of Chinese children, it’s the first piece of literature they memorize. It’s trotted out (翻出) for all occasions. My son’s voice rang out with confidence and his arms swept up to indicate the moon above. Joy and wonder fell on my father’s face as he listened to the familiar verses from the mouth of his grandson: verses that had been spoken by my father and my grandparents when they were students in China, and by countless boys and girls before that.

The Iron Flower Show, or Da Tie Hua, is an amazing old Chinese art with a history of more than 1000 years. People mainly enjoy it during the Spring Festival in places like Hebei and Jiangxi. To 36 this wonderful show, artists need special tools and careful preparation, and they throw hot melted iron—it is over 1000℃—high into the air or against hard walls. 37 , thousands of bright sparks (火花) come out, just like shining stars in the sky.
Before the iron flower show, a two-story (层) eight-sided building is built in the middle of the large square. It is more than ten feet high, with the first floor four metres tall and the second floor one and a half metres tall. A tall pole 38 in the center, with firecrackers hung on it. Nearby, there is a small stove to melt the iron, and the workers use a special long iron spoon that is as thick as a fist and as long as a ruler. These tools are very important for the smooth performance.
During the show, workers take off their shirts, 39 the iron spoon with hot melted iron in one hand and a thin stick in the other. They quickly pick up the hot iron and throw it high into the air. Several workers move around to make beautiful sparks of different sizes. At the same time, firecrackers are set off, and a dragon dance team joins in. The dragon dancers run through the falling sparks, making the show 40 and full of life.
As an old folk art, Da Tie Hua not only shows ancient Chinese iron workers’ great skills but also carries people’s best 41 for a happy life. Answer the questions (根据以下内容回答问题).
Hello, Larry,
So glad to hear from you this morning and to hear about the Chinese Lantern Festival. I note that you saw lots of fireworks IN your flat. I am sure that you meant you saw them FROM your flat. If they were IN your flat, that would be rather dangerous! Your visit to the Roman Catholic cathedral was interesting, too.
I believe you have received our New Year greetings twice over! After I wrote the card, I could not find it. It was gone. . . lost! I did not know where, so I wrote another card. Later I received a note telling me that you had received both cards. So you were doubly greeted! And, I hope, doubly blessed!
It was good to know you have been to your parents’ home for the New Year. I trust you found them well and enjoyed visiting your hometown. You must have been excited to meet your old friends and neighbours there again.
My brother John has a Chinese friend who he met in London last summer. His name is Andrew. He works with students in Beijing, and also Chinese students returning to Beijing after having studied and worked abroad—like you did. He seems a very pleasant fellow who, when I told him I had a friend recently returning from Scotland, said he would be happy to contact you if you would like that. He is currently in Taiwan but will be back in Beijing around 15th March after which, he says, he would be happy to meet up with you. If you would like to meet him, I will send you his address and/or him yours, but I will do nothing further till I hear from you.
About your question about us, as Christians, eating pork…, yes, we do indeed try to follow the teaching of the Bible (圣经) as it applies to our daily living. Some rules do not apply to us in our day though.
The sun is shining brightly today but it is still very cold this morning. There is heavy snow everywhere. In some places, power cables go wrong, too. The winter conditions are lasting longer this year than before.
Best wishes!
Sincerely,
Ken
42.Did Larry see the fireworks in his flat or from his flat?
43.Why did Ken say Larry was doubly greeted?
44.What did Larry do during his New Year holiday?
45.Where does Larry live now?
46.Write a question Larry asked Ken according to the underlined words. Why did he ask it?
47.Do you think Larry will meet up with Andrew? Why?

The show at Kaifeng Long Live Mountain was once shown on CCTV News. Now it is a famous art in Kaifeng and one of the top ten folk arts in the Yellow River area.

六、任务型阅读(共12分)
Sincerely,
Ken

33.推理判断题。根据“When I see my son chat with his grandfather in Mandarin or when my daughter insists on fish for Lunar New Year, the time spent reading all those books closely feels well-spent.”可知,当她意识到她的孩子们对中国文化很感兴趣时,作者觉得她教他们普通话的所有努力都是值得的。故选D。

五、完形填空(共9分)
The show at Kaifeng Long Live Mountain was once shown on CCTV News. Now it is a famous art in Kaifeng and one of the top ten folk arts in the Yellow River area.

六、任务型阅读(共12分)
Why?
【答案】42.From his flat. 43.Because Ken wrote two cards to Larry and he received both of them. 44.He went to his parents’ home, met his old friends and neighbours. 45.In Beijing. 46.Do Christians eat pork? He asked the question because he was curious about Christian religious practices and dietary rules.
47.开放性试题,言之有理即可。参考答案为:Yes, I think Larry will likely meet Andrew. Andrew works with Chinese students returning from abroad, just like Larry did. This common experience could make them connect easily.
根据第一段“I note that you saw lots of fireworks IN your flat. I am sure that you meant you saw them FROM your flat.”可知,Ken纠正了Larry的介词使用,如果烟花在屋里 (in his flat),会很危险,所以应该是从屋里看外面的烟花 (from his flat)。故填From his flat.
43.根据第二段“After I wrote the card, I could not find it. It was gone... lost! I did not know where, so I wrote another card. Later I received a note telling me that you had received both cards.”可知,Ken写了两张贺卡给Larry,Larry都收到了;因此,Ken说Larry被双重问候了。故填Because Ken wrote two cards to Larry and he received both of them.
44.根据第三段“It was good to know you have been to your parents’ home for the New Year... You must have been excited to meet your old friends and neighbours there again.”可知,Larry在新年假期去了父母家,见到了老朋友和邻居。故填He went to his parents’ home, met his old friends and neighbours.
45.根据第四段“His name is Andrew. He works with students in Beijing, and also Chinese students returning to Beijing after having studied and worked abroad—like you did.”可知,安德鲁的工作对象包括在北京的学生,以及像Larry一样在国外学习和工作后回到北京的中国学生;据此可以推断,Larry现在住在北京。故填In Beijing.
46.根据第五段“About your question about us, as Christians, eating pork…”可知,Larry问的问题是关于基督徒是否吃猪肉;他问这个问题的原因是,Larry可能对基督徒的宗教习俗和饮食禁忌感到好奇。故填Do Christians eat pork? He asked the question because he was curious about Christian religious practices and dietary rules.
47.开放性试题,言之有理即可。参考答案为:Yes, I think Larry will likely meet Andrew. Andrew works with Chinese students returning from abroad, just like Larry did. This common experience could make them connect easily.
