第 1 篇 Wang Shanghai: The First Tree Planter at Saihanba
【Unit 1 基础篇 · Unit 1 · A 人物介绍 · 277 词】
Wang Shanghai was not a famous man in his lifetime. He did not write books, and his name was not widely known. But today, when people talk about Saihanba, they often begin with him.
In 1962, Wang was asked to lead a group of tree planters in the north of Hebei. The place was called Saihanba. At that time it was a dry and sandy land. Sandstorms came again and again, and the wind carried sand as far as Beijing. Some people said that nothing could grow there.
Wang did not go alone. That winter, he took his wife and his young children with him, and the family moved to a small house on the cold land. His friends did not understand. Why would a man take his family to such a place? Wang said that if he asked others to live there, his own family should live there too.
In the first year, he led 369 people to plant trees. The work was hard. They carried young trees up the hills by hand and watered them one by one. The first two years were a failure: very few trees lived. But Wang did not stop. He and his team kept trying, and they slowly found the right way to plant.
Wang spent the rest of his life at Saihanba. He never saw the forest as we see it today; he died before the trees were tall. But the work he began continued, year after year, and the land turned green.
His story tells us something simple. A big change does not start with a big action. It starts with a person who is willing to stay.

第 2 篇 Small Code, Big Change
【Unit 1 基础篇 · Unit 1 · B 说明文 · 261 词】
Ten years ago, if you walked into a shop in Shuanghe, a small town in Anhui, you had to pay with paper money. Today, you can leave your wallet at home.
The change began in 2016, when a young shop owner put a small square code on his wall. Customers could scan it with their phones and pay at once. At first, few people used it. Most villagers were over fifty, and many of them did not trust a machine with their money.
“It took me a year to learn,” said Grandpa Liu, a fruit seller. “I was afraid I would press the wrong button and lose everything.” His granddaughter spent a whole week teaching him. Now he uses his phone every day, and he says it is much more convenient than carrying a heavy bag of coins.
The code has changed more than the way people pay. Farmers can now sell their vegetables online and get their money the same day. A woman who makes cakes at home has customers in three towns. “Before, I could only sell to my neighbours,” she said. “Now people I have never met order my cakes.”
There are problems, too. Some older people still feel left behind. To help them, the town opened a free class on Saturday mornings. More than two hundred people have finished the class, and the oldest student was eighty-six.
“Money is still money,” said one teacher at the class. “We are not teaching them a new way to spend. We are teaching them a new way to take part.”
( ) 6. What do we learn about the small square code?

B. She can now sell to people she has never met.
C. She has stopped selling to her neighbours.
D. She sells her cakes only inside her own town.
( ) 9. How is the passage organized after the first two paragraphs?
A. It introduces the change, then its results, then the problems, and finally what the town does about them.
B. It tells a story in time order, from beginning to end.
C. It compares two different towns in Anhui.
D. It lists the reasons for the change in order of importance.

第 3 篇 Teaching Grandpa to Make a Video Call
【Unit 1 基础篇 · Unit 1 · C 记叙文 · 275 词】
My grandpa is seventy-four years old. He has lived in the same village all his life, and for most of that time he refused to use a smartphone. “A phone is for calling,” he said. “Why do I need a camera in my pocket?”
Everything changed last winter. My cousin went to work in Guangzhou, and she missed her family very much. She wanted to see our faces, and she wanted us to see hers. So my parents bought my grandpa a smartphone, and I was asked to teach him.
The first lesson was easy. I showed him how to touch the green button. He turned to me and said, “Is that all?” The second lesson was harder. When my cousin called, grandpa held the phone at arm’s length and pointed the camera at the ceiling. We only saw a white light.
We practised every evening for two weeks. I put small coloured notes on the back of the phone. Each note showed a picture: a face for the camera, a mouth for the speaker, and a hand for the answer button. Grandpa studied them for a long time, and then one evening he did it alone.
When my cousin’s face appeared on the screen, grandpa put his hand over his mouth. He did not say anything for a while. Then he said, “You look thinner. Eat more.”
Now grandpa calls his granddaughter almost every day. And the notes? They are still on the phone. He says he does not need them, but he will not take them off. “They are my first lesson,” he says. “I am not so old that I cannot learn.”

My father grew up in a village beside the Yellow River. For thirty years he has told me stories about the sound of the water. Last October, during the National Day holiday, we finally went back together.
In his stories, the trip took two days. People took a slow train and then a bus, and the last part was a long walk along a dirt road. “When it rained, the road turned into mud,” he said. “One year I had to carry my shoes and walk barefoot.”
This time, we took the high-speed railway from Hefei. The whole trip took us a little over two hours, and the seats were as comfortable as those in a plane. The train ran across wide fields and through tunnels in the hills. My father looked out of the window for the whole trip and said very little.
When we finally stood by the river, he was quiet for a long time. “It sounds the same,” he said at last. “I thought they might have changed that, too.”
We spent three days there. There are no more dirt roads. The old houses have become small hotels, and village shops sell local food and tea. The villagers told us that the number of visitors has grown greatly since the railway opened, and that young people have come back to run restaurants and small businesses.
My father said he was happy, but also a little sad. “Everything is easier now,” he said. “My children will never know what that road was like.” Then he laughed and added, “Maybe that is a good thing.”

第 5 篇 Is Change Always a Good Thing?
【Unit 1 基础篇 · Unit 1 · E 议论文 · 317 词】
Great changes have taken place in Chinese villages over the past twenty years. Roads have become wider, houses have become taller, and almost every family has a phone that can pay for things. Most people say this is good, and in many ways it is. But is change always a good thing? The honest answer is: not always.
Think about a village in the mountains. Ten years ago, its young people left to find work in the cities. Last year a new road reached the village, and tourists began to arrive. Now the village has small hotels, shops and a tea house. The villagers earn much more money than before, and their children can go to a better school. These are the gains, and nobody should deny them.
Yet change also brings losses, and the losses are quieter. The old stone houses are being pulled down and replaced by white buildings with glass windows. The village looks newer, but it looks like hundreds of other villages. Some of the old songs are no longer sung, because the people who knew them have moved away or passed away. A grandmother told me that she is glad about the road, but she misses the evenings when the whole village sat together.
Does this mean we should stop change? Of course not. Nobody wants to go back to rough roads and water shortages. But we can ask a better question. When something new comes, what do we want to keep? A village can build a new road and still keep its old songs. It can open a hotel and still keep its stone walls.
Change is not a train that we must either catch or miss. We can decide what to carry with us. The villages that do this well are not the ones that refuse to change. They are the ones that change and remember at the same time.
( ) 21. What changes in Chinese villages are mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. More factories and fewer schools.
B. Longer holidays and bigger hospitals.
C. Cheaper food and faster trains.
D. Wider roads, taller houses and phones that can pay for things.
( ) 22. How does the grandmother in the mountain village feel about the new road?
A. She refuses to use it.
B. She thinks it should be closed.
C. She is glad about it but misses the old evenings.
D. She is angry that the tourists have come.
( ) 23. What does the writer suggest about the new white buildings?
A. They are stronger than the old stone houses.
B. The village is losing something that made it special.
C. They cost the villagers too much money.
D. They were built for the tourists.
( ) 24. What is the writer’s main point?
A. Villages should stop all change.
B. New roads always bring more problems than gains.
C. We should keep what is valuable while accepting change.
D. Old songs matter more than new roads.
( ) 25. How is the passage organized?
A. It tells a story in time order from past to present.
B. It shows the good side of change, then the losses, and then what we can do.
C. It compares two villages in different countries.
D. It lists the changes from the most important to the least.
【生词注释】gain 好处;收获 loss 损失;失去 deny 否认 replace 取代;代替 pass away 去世 tourist 游客

第 6 篇 Ten Years of a Village Head
【Unit 1 提升篇 · Unit 1 · A 人物介绍 · 343 词】
When Li Guoming became the head of Xiahe Village in 2014, he was thirty-one years old, and the village had one problem that everyone talked about: the road. It was a dirt track, and on rainy days the mud was deep enough to hold a cart. Trucks refused to come in. Farmers had to carry their vegetables to the market on their backs.
His first three years were not easy. He asked the government for help, and he also asked every family to give what they could. Some families gave money, some gave labour, and a few gave nothing and said the whole idea was useless. Li did not argue with them. He began working on the road himself, and after a month, most of the village was working beside him. The road was finished in 2017.
Then he turned to something bigger. He noticed that the village’s soil was good for fruit, but every family was growing corn, which brought very little money. He brought in young trees and asked the farmers to try a new crop. At first, only eleven families agreed. Three years later, those eleven families were the richest in the village, and the others came to ask for the same trees.
Today Xiahe has an industrial park and a small factory that dries fruit and puts it into boxes. The vegetables that once had to be carried to the market now leave the village in trucks. Young people who left for the cities are coming back, not to visit, but to work.
I asked Li what he is most proud of. I expected him to mention the road or the factory. Instead, he pointed to a young woman who was teaching farmers how to use a computer. “Ten years ago, nobody in this village believed that things could change,” he said. “Now they do. That is the thing I am proud of.”
A village can be changed by money, but it is only changed for a long time when the people themselves begin to believe in the change.
( ) 26. What was Xiahe Village’s biggest problem in 2014?
A. Too few young people stayed to grow fruit.
B. The road was a dirt track and trucks would not come in.
C. The village had no school for its children.
D. The government had stopped helping the village.
( ) 27. What happened after Li started repairing the road himself?
A. Most of the village joined him.
B. The government refused to give any more money.
C. The other families moved away.
D. The road was finished in 2018.
( ) 28. Why did only eleven families agree to grow fruit at first?
A. They were told not to grow fruit by the government.
B. They had no land to plant the young trees.
C. They were not sure that the new crop would bring money.
D. They wanted to keep growing corn for their own food.
( ) 29. What can we infer about Li from his answer to the writer’s question?
A. He is sorry that he did not build more factories.
B. He values the villagers’ confidence more than the buildings.
C. He thinks the road was a waste of time.
D. He wants to leave the village and work in a city.

第 7 篇 Three Conditions
【Unit 1 提升篇 · Unit 1 · B 说明文 · 305 词】
Saihanba is often described as a “green miracle”. Sixty years ago the land was dry and sandy, and today it is the largest man-made forest in the world. People who visit it usually ask the same question: how did it happen?
The first condition was water — or rather, the lack of it, and the way the workers dealt with it. Young trees need water, and Saihanba had very little. The first two years of planting failed almost completely. Instead of giving up, the team looked for plants that were already used to dry land. They found a wild bush whose roots spread wide and held the soil together. Once it was planted in large numbers, the sand stopped moving, and the soil began to hold water.
The second condition was time. A tree does not grow faster because someone is in a hurry. Saihanba’s forest was not built in a decade; it grew over more than fifty years. Each generation of workers added its own part, and most of them never saw the forest as it is today. Wang Shanghai, who led the first group in 1962, died long before the trees were tall.
The third condition is harder to see, but it may be the most important. Saihanba succeeded because the people who worked there were given a reason to stay. The government built houses, schools and hospitals, and workers could bring their families. In many other places, similar projects failed not because the soil was worse, but because the people left.
There is a lesson here for anyone who wants to change something. It is easy to start. It is much harder to keep a project alive long enough for it to work. Saihanba was not saved by one great idea. It was saved by people who simply did not go home.
( ) 31. What did the workers do after the first two years failed?
A. They moved to another place with better soil.
B. They asked the government for more water.
C. They planted the same young trees again.
D. They looked for plants that were already used to dry land.
( ) 32. Why does the writer mention Wang Shanghai’s death?
A. To show that the work was dangerous.
B. To show that he was a famous man in China.
C. To show that the forest took a very long time to grow.
D. To show that the government did not help the workers.
( ) 33. Why did similar projects in other places fail?
A. Their soil was worse than Saihanba’s.
B. The people who worked there left.
C. They had no government support at all.
D. They did not plant enough trees.
( ) 34. What does the underlined phrase “did not go home” mean in the last paragraph?
A. They kept working on the project instead of giving up.
B. They stayed in Saihanba until they died.
C. They never visited their families again.
D. They forgot where they had come from.
( ) 35. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Dry land can never be turned into forest.
B. Only the government can plant a large forest.
C. A project needs both the right methods and people who stay.
D. Time is less important than money.
【生词注释】condition 条件 decade 十年 project 项目

第 8 篇 The Bicycle in the Shed
【Unit 1 提升篇 · Unit 1 · C 记叙文 · 288 词】
My father’s old bicycle is still in the shed behind our house. It has not been used for fifteen years, and the tyres are flat.
My father bought it in 1998. He was a worker in a small factory then, and the factory was eight kilometres from our village. There was no bus. So every morning he left at half past five and rode along the river for an hour. In winter it was still dark when he came back.
I once asked him why he did not buy a motor bike. He said he had thought about it, but the money was needed for something else — first for my grandmother’s medicine, and then for my school books.
He rode that bicycle for fourteen years. I remember sitting on the back seat when I was six, holding his coat, watching the lights of the village come closer. I remember the sound of the chain, and the way he would say “Hold on” before we went down a hill.
In 2012, my father came home with a second-hand car. It was not new and not beautiful, but he cleaned it every Sunday. The bicycle went into the shed. Nobody said anything about it. It just stayed there.
Last summer I asked him if he wanted to sell it. He was quiet for a moment. “No,” he said. “It took me to work for fourteen years. I will not sell the thing that raised this family.”
I understand now. The bicycle is not a machine. It is fourteen years of mornings. When I look at it, I do not see a bicycle. I see a young man riding through the dark, and I know exactly where he was going.
( ) 36. Why did the writer’s father leave home at half past five?
A. He liked to watch the sunrise by the river.
B. He wanted to avoid meeting his neighbours.
C. The factory was far away and there was no bus.
D. He had to buy vegetables before work.
( ) 37. Why did the father not buy a motorbike?

B. The money was needed for medicine and school books.
C. Motorbikes were not allowed in the village.
D. He thought a bicycle was faster.
( ) 38. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A. the bicycle
B. the car
C. the shed
D. the house
( ) 39. What can we infer about the father’s feelings for the bicycle?
A. He thinks it is worth a lot of money.
B. He is sorry that he ever bought it.
C. He connects it with the years he worked for his family.
D. He wants his son to ride it to work.
( ) 40. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Old things should be thrown away.

第 9 篇 A Study Trip into the Desert
【Unit 1 提升篇 · Unit 1 · D 游记与探索 · 317 词】
Last August, our geography club spent four days in the Mu Us Desert in the north of Shaanxi. I had read that deserts are dry and lifeless. What I saw on the first morning was mostly sand and a hard wind, and I began to believe what I had read.
Our guide was a woman in her fifties. She told us that forty years ago, this place was even worse. Sandstorms came almost every week, and the sand buried the railway so deeply that trains could not pass. Her family, like many others, was ready to move away.
The change began, she said, with small things. Workers laid lines of dry straw into the sand in the shape of squares. Nobody believed that this would help. But the straw held the sand in place, and the wind could not carry it away. Then the workers planted grass and small trees inside the squares. Year after year, the green area grew.
On the second day, we walked into a small wood. The ground was soft and cool, and we could hear birds. Our guide told us to put our hands on the ground. Under our fingers there was a dark, wet layer of soil. Twelve years ago, she said, this was pure sand.
I asked her why she had stayed. She laughed and said that she had once wanted to leave, but that she had changed her mind. “Every tree here has a number,” she said. “I know some of them the way you know your neighbours.”
On the last evening, we wrote down what we had learned. One girl in our group wrote a sentence that stayed with me: the desert did not become green by itself. It became green because someone refused to leave.
What I understood on that trip was not a fact from a book. It was something I could feel under my feet.

第 10 篇 Should We Be Afraid of Change?
【Unit 1 提升篇 · Unit 1 · E 议论文 · 335 词】
Nobody enjoys hearing the sentence “Things are going to change.” We hear it when a school closes, when a factory moves, when a family has to leave the house it has lived in for thirty years. Our first feeling is usually fear, and that fear is not stupid. Change often takes away something we did not choose to give up.
But fear is a poor guide, for two reasons.
The first reason is that fear makes us see only one side. When a new machine comes into a workshop, we notice the workers it replaces. We do not notice the new jobs that appear around it: the people who repair it, teach others to use it, or write the programmes it needs. This does not mean that everyone wins. It means that the picture is larger than the part we are afraid of.
The second reason is that change is not something we can refuse. The world will move whether we agree or not. A farmer can be angry about the new road, or he can be the first person to sell his fruit beside it. Both are choices; only one of them is useful.
So what should we do with our fear? We should not try to feel nothing. Instead, we should turn it into a question. Not “How can I stop this?” but “What can I do with what I have?” A student who meets a harder textbook can complain, or he can find the two or three chapters that interest him and start there. A worker whose factory is closing can wait for someone to help him, or he can ask what he is actually good at.
People who live well through change are not braver than the rest of us. They simply ask better questions earlier. Fear tells us that something important is at risk. That is useful information. It is only when we stop at the fear, and never ask what comes next, that we lose the thing that mattered.
( ) 46. What does the writer say about our fear when change comes?
A. It is a foolish feeling that we should hide.
B. It is natural, and it is not stupid.
C. It only appears in older people.
D. It is a sign that we are brave.
( ) 47. What do we usually fail to notice when a machine replaces workers in a workshop?
A. The money that the machine costs.
B. The age of the machine.
C. The number of hours it can work.
D. The new jobs that appear around it.
( ) 48. What can we learn from the example of the farmer?
A. Farmers should never be angry about new roads.
B. Fruit cannot be sold beside a new road.
C. Roads always help farmers sell more fruit.
D. The same change may be a problem or a chance, depending on what we do.
( ) 49. What do the student and the worker examples have in common?
A. Both are facing a difficulty and both can choose to act.
B. Both have lost their jobs.
C. Both are afraid of new machines.
D. Both are waiting for other people to help them.
( ) 50. How is the passage organized?
A. It tells the writer’s own story from childhood to now.
B. It compares two countries and their ways of change.
C. It lists the changes from the most important to the least.
D. It describes the fear, gives two reasons why fear is a poor guide, and then suggests what to do with it.

第 11 篇 Tu Youyou: The Scientist Who Read Old Books
【Unit 2 基础篇 · Unit 2 · A 人物介绍 · 249 词】
Tu Youyou was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang, in 1930. As a girl, she was often ill, and she spent a lot of time in bed reading. When she grew up, she decided to study medicine so that she could help other sick people.
In 1969, Tu was asked to join a special team. Many people in southern China were suffering from a serious disease called malaria, and the usual medicine no longer worked. The team had to find something new, and they had very little time.
Tu did something that few scientists would think of. She went back to old Chinese books and read about hundreds of plants. One sentence in an old book caught her eye: it said that a certain plant should be taken in a cold way, not in a hot one. Earlier teams had always used hot water, and the medicine had not worked well.
Tu and her team changed the method. They used a low temperature, and the new medicine worked. In 1972, they got a pure form of it, and later it was given the name qinghaosu.
Tu Youyou did not work for money or fame. She kept working quietly in her laboratory for many years. In 2015, she won the Nobel Prize in Medicine. She was the first Chinese scientist to win a Nobel Prize in science.

第 12 篇 Five Steps from an Old Book to a New Drug
【Unit 2 基础篇 · Unit 2 · B 说明文 · 312 词】
Qinghaosu is a medicine that has saved millions of lives in Asia and Africa. How was it found? It was not one lucky moment. It was a process with five clear steps.
Step one is to go back to old books. The team collected more than two thousand old recipes from Chinese medicine books. They wanted plants that had been used for fever for hundreds of years. It was a way of choosing where to look. In the end, 640 plants went onto a list.
Step two is to test the plants one by one. Each plant was made into a simple extract, and it was tried on animals first. Most of them did nothing at all. One plant, qinghao, was useful, but the results were not steady: sometimes it worked, and sometimes it did not.
Step three is to change the method. This was the key. Old books said that qinghao should be taken with cold water. Earlier workers had used heat, and the heat had destroyed the active part. When the team used a low temperature, the extract became far stronger.
Step four is to find out what was really doing the work. The team separated the extract into parts and tested each part. At last they got a small crystal and gave it the name qinghaosu.
Step five is to test the medicine on people and then make it in factories. A small number of patients were treated first, and all of them got better. Then the method was passed to factories, and the medicine travelled to Africa, where malaria was killing children every day.
In 2015, the discovery won a Nobel Prize. But the prize did not change the five steps. Careful reading, patient testing and the courage to change the method: these are what turned a page in an old book into a medicine for the world.
( ) 56. What did the team do with the old books?
A. They copied the most famous recipes into a new book.
B. They sold them to raise money for the research.

D. They asked old doctors to explain every page.
( ) 57. Why did the earlier workers fail to get a strong extract?
A. They used the wrong plant.
B. They did not have enough workers.
C. They tested it on animals for too long.
D. They used heat, which destroyed the active part.
( ) 58. What happened to the patients who were treated in the fifth step?
A. All of them got better.
B. Most of them felt even worse.
C. Only the children got better.
D. None of them finished the treatment.
( ) 59. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The Nobel Prize was given for the five steps themselves.
B. The discovery came from a series of careful decisions, not from luck.
C. One lucky moment was enough to make the discovery.
D. Old books are more useful than laboratories.
( ) 60. What does the underlined word “extract” mean in Paragraph 3?

第 13 篇 The Day My Robot Fell Apart
【Unit 2 基础篇 · Unit 2 · C 记叙文 · 313 词】
I will never forget the science fair of Grade 8.
My friend Wei and I had spent three months building a small robot. We called it “Little Turtle”. It could pick up a bottle and put it into a box. We were sure we would win.
The fair was held in the school hall on a Saturday morning. There were thirty teams, and each team had ten minutes. When our turn came, Wei turned on the switch. Little Turtle moved forward, picked up the bottle — and then its arm fell off and rolled across the floor.
The hall went quiet. Some students laughed. I wanted to run out of the room. Wei stood there with the arm in his hand, and his face turned red.
Then our science teacher, Mr Gu, walked over. He did not say “Never mind” or “It doesn’t matter”. Instead he asked us a question: “What did you learn in these three months?”
Nobody had ever asked us that. We started to talk, and then we started to argue about what had gone wrong. It turned out that we had chosen the wrong material for the arm. Mr Gu listened for a while, then said, “That is a real answer. Write it down.”
We lost the competition. Another team won with a simple model that did not even move. But two things happened after that day. First, Wei and I wrote a five-page report on our mistake, and it was put up on the wall of the science room. Second, we built a new robot the next term, and this time the arm stayed on.
Years later, I became an engineer. I meet failures almost every week. Each time, I remember Mr Gu’s question. A failure is not the end of a story. It is only the part of the story that most people forget to write down.

第 14 篇 A Day of Questions at the Science Museum
【Unit 2 基础篇 · Unit 2 · D 游记与探索 · 284 词】
Last Friday our class visited the Science Museum in the provincial capital. We left school at seven in the morning, and the bus journey took about two hours.
The building is a huge grey box with a glass roof, and it is much bigger inside than it looks from the street. On the first floor, a guide showed us how a small machine can turn sunlight into electricity. Some of us then tried a bicycle that could make a lamp shine. I found that I could light a whole room for about one minute with my own legs.
The second floor is my favourite. There we met a robot called Xiao Dou. It can answer questions and it never gets tired. A boy in our class asked whether robots would take all the jobs away. Xiao Dou thought for a second and said, “I can do many things, but nobody has taught me how to be surprised. That is still your job.”
In the afternoon we watched a short film about deep-sea exploration in a 4D cinema. When the small submarine went down, our seats moved and cold air came out of the back of the chair. A girl next to me shouted, and then she laughed at herself.
When the museum closed at five, nobody wanted to leave. Our teacher said that a museum is not a place where you look at answers. “It is a place where questions are put in front of you,” she said.

第 15 篇 What Should We Learn from a Hero?
【Unit 2 基础篇 · Unit 2 · E 议论文 · 290 词】
Every year, our school puts a photo of a famous person on the wall of the hall. Last year it was a scientist. This year it is a doctor who worked in a mountain village for forty years.
Heroes like these are worth looking up to. But a question is worth asking too: what exactly should we learn from them?
Some students think the answer is easy: we should try to become as famous as they are. They choose a big goal and tell everyone about it. A month later, nothing has changed. This is because fame was never the point. The scientist did not get up early for thirty years in order to have his photo on a wall.
Others think we should copy what a hero does. So they decide to study medicine, or to go and live in a faraway village. Sometimes this works, but often it does not. A young person who copies another person’s path may find that the path does not fit him at all.
Perhaps the most useful thing we can learn is not what a hero did, but how a hero worked. The doctor in the mountain village did not do one great thing. He did small things, again and again, for forty years. He learned from his mistakes. He kept his promises even when nobody was watching.
If we look at heroes this way, the lesson becomes something we can use today. It is not “Become a doctor” but “Finish what you start”. It is not “Be famous” but “Pay attention to the people in front of you”.
A hero is not a person who is different from us. A hero is a person who chose a direction and kept walking.
( ) 71. Who is on the wall of the hall this year?
A. A scientist.
B. A teacher from the writer’s school.
C. A doctor who worked in a mountain village for forty years.
D. A famous sports star.
( ) 72. Why do some students’ plans fail after a month?
A. They were thinking about fame instead of about the work.
B. They are too busy with their schoolwork.
C. They chose a goal that was too large to reach.
D. Nobody was willing to help them.
( ) 73. What can we infer about the doctor from Paragraph 5?
A. He became famous because of one great action.
B. He never made any mistakes.
C. He only worked when other people were watching.
D. He worked in a steady and patient way.
( ) 74. What is the writer’s main point?
A. We should learn how heroes work, not just what they did.
B. Everyone should become a doctor.
C. Famous people are better than ordinary people.
D. Students should not have big goals.
( ) 75. Where is this passage most probably from?
A. A travel guide.
B. A science report.
C. A school magazine.
D. A shopping website.

第 16 篇 The Woman They Called China’s Marie Curie
【Unit 2 提升篇 · Unit 2 · A 人物介绍 · 285 词】
He Zehui was born in Suzhou in 1914, into a family where books and questions were both welcome. Her father was a teacher who believed that daughters should study exactly as much as sons. In the 1930s, that was not a common opinion.
She entered Tsinghua University to study physics and graduated at the top of her class. Then she did something even more unusual. She wrote to a famous university in Germany and asked to study there — at a time when very few Chinese women studied abroad, and fewer still chose physics.
In Germany, she made her name with a difficult experiment. She was the first person to find a way to measure high-speed particles(粒子). Her method was later used in many laboratories around the world.
In 1946, she went to France, where she met Qian Sanqiang, another young physicist. They married and worked together. In 1948, the two of them returned to China. China at that time was poor and had almost no modern equipment. They built their laboratory in a small building, using borrowed instruments and used parts.
He Zehui spent the rest of her life on nuclear physics(核物理). She was unusual in another way, too: she never stopped working at the bench herself. Even when she was the leader of a whole institute, she would put on a white coat and go to the bench with her students.
She was called “China’s Marie Curie”. She did not like the comparison. “I am not Marie Curie,” she said once. “I am He Zehui. I just did what needed to be done.”
She died in 2011, at the age of ninety-seven. Many of the young scientists she trained are still working today.
( ) 76. Why was He Zehui’s father’s opinion unusual in the 1930s?
A. He thought books were useless for children.
B. He thought daughters should study exactly as much as sons.
C. He did not want his daughter to leave Suzhou.
D. He believed that only sons should study science.
( ) 77. What did He Zehui do at the German university?
A. She learned how to build houses.
B. She found a way to measure high-speed particles.
C. She wrote books about life in Germany.
D. She taught Chinese to German students.
( ) 78. What was difficult for He Zehui and Qian Sanqiang when they returned to China?
A. They could not find any students to teach.
B. They were not allowed to do research.
C. They did not speak the same language.
D. They had almost no modern equipment.
( ) 79. What can we infer from the sentence “I just did what needed to be done”?
A. He Zehui was modest and cared about the work rather than about herself.
B. He Zehui thought her work was not important.
C. He Zehui wanted to be given a different name.
D. He Zehui did not respect Marie Curie.
( ) 80. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Family of Teachers

第 17 篇 How a Seed Enters a Seed Bank
【Unit 2 提升篇 · Unit 2 · B 说明文 · 348 词】
A seed bank is not a museum of dead things. It is a working library, and every bottle on its shelves began with a decision made far away in the wild.
Collecting comes first. Collectors never take everything they find. They walk through a wild group of plants and take a few seeds from many different plants, but never all the seeds from one plant. In this way the wild group can still grow again. For each collection they write down the place, the date and the name of the plant. Without these notes a seed is almost useless, because a scientist who does not know where a seed came from cannot know what it may be good for.
Drying comes next. Fresh seeds hold a lot of water, and water is the enemy of long storage. So the seeds are put in a dry room with silica gel for weeks. This work must be careful in both directions. If a seed is not dried enough, it will go bad. If it is dried too much, the inside will be damaged and it will never grow.
Cleaning and weighing come after that. Empty seeds and small stones are taken out by machine, because space in the cold room is expensive. Then the seeds are weighed. The weight of one thousand seeds is recorded, and the number shows how many seeds there are.
Then comes sealing. The clean, dry seeds go into glass bottles or foil bags, and air and water must not get in or out. Each container gets its own number, which is linked to the field notes.
Storing is the last step. The containers go into a cold room at about minus eighteen degrees, and there the seeds can sleep for decades. Twice a year, workers take out a few seeds and try to make them grow. If too few of them grow, the seeds must be grown and collected again.
Many banks also send a copy of each collection to a second bank far away. A fire, a flood or a war cannot reach both.
( ) 81. Why do collectors take only a few seeds from each plant?
A. Because seeds are too heavy for them to carry.
B. Because wild seeds are worse than farm seeds.
C. Because the cold room has no more space.
D. Because they want to leave the wild plants able to grow again.
( ) 82. What may happen if a seed is dried too much?
A. It will hold too much water.
B. It will grow much faster.
C. It will be damaged inside and will never grow.
D. It will be moved to a warmer room.
( ) 83. Why do workers take out a few seeds and try to make them grow twice a year?
A. To sell the young plants to farmers.
B. To make the cold room less crowded.
C. To find out whether the seeds are still alive.
D. To teach new workers how to plant seeds.
( ) 84. Why does a seed bank often send a copy of each collection to a second bank?
A. Because a disaster in one place cannot reach both banks.
B. Because the first bank has no room for it.
C. Because the second bank pays more money for it.
D. Because the two banks want to compare their notes.
( ) 85. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Why seeds are important for farmers.
B. How seed banks are built in different countries.
C. Why people should collect seeds in the wild.

第 18 篇 The Desk in the Corner
【Unit 2 提升篇 · Unit 2 · C 记叙文 · 341 词】
Last winter I spent one day as a volunteer at a community hospital near my home. My mother works there as a nurse, and she found the place for me. I thought I would help the doctors. Instead, I was told to sit behind a small desk and answer the phone.
At first I was disappointed. The desk was in a corner, far from the treatment rooms, and I could not see anything interesting. My job was simple: when people called to ask about opening hours or to change an appointment, I wrote the information in a book and passed the book to a nurse.
The morning was quiet. Then, at about eleven, an old man came in by himself. He walked slowly and held a plastic bag with all his papers inside. He wanted to see a doctor, but he did not know which department he needed, and he could not read the small words on the sign near the door. He stood under it for a long time and said nothing to anyone.
I went over and asked if I could help. It took us almost twenty minutes to work out the right department. His knees hurt when it was cold, and the sign for bone problems was only two metres away from where he was standing.
He said thank you three times. On his way out, he stopped at my desk and asked my name. Then he said something I have not forgotten. “Young people think volunteering is about doing big things. Usually it is about standing next to someone who cannot find the sign.”
By five o’clock my legs ached and I had answered more than sixty calls. I had not saved anybody’s life. But I understood something that day. A hospital is not only a place where doctors work. It is also a place where people arrive confused and frightened, and a small kind of help can be the difference between being lost and being found.
Next winter I will go back to the same desk.

第 19 篇 A Visit to the Seed Bank
【Unit 2 提升篇 · Unit 2 · D 游记与探索 · 260 词】
Last spring, our biology class visited a seed bank outside Kunming. I expected a museum. What I found was more like a very cold library.
The building has no windows in the storage area. Inside, the temperature is about minus eighteen degrees, and the air is dry. Our teacher told us that under these conditions, some seeds can stay alive for hundreds of years.
A worker showed us how the seeds are kept. First, each seed is dried and cleaned. Then it is weighed and photographed, and the information is put into a computer. Finally, the seeds are sealed in a glass bottle and put on a shelf. There are more than eighty thousand kinds of seeds here, and each of them has its own number.
“Why do you keep so many?” a classmate asked. The worker gave an example. In the 1970s, a serious disease destroyed most of the rice in one part of Asia. Scientists found a kind of wild rice that was not affected — and that plant had been kept in a seed bank. They used it to develop a new kind of rice, and millions of people had food again.
I asked whether the seed bank made money. The worker laughed. “We lose money,” she said. “Seeds do not pay. But if we do not keep them, nobody can pay for what we lose.”
On the bus back to school, our teacher asked us to write one sentence about the visit. I wrote: “A seed bank is a library, but the books are the future.”

A. Warm and wet.
B. Cold, dry and with no windows.
C. Bright and full of visitors.

A. It is cooked and eaten in the laboratory.
B. It is planted in the garden outside.
C. It is sent to another country at once.
D. It is dried, cleaned, weighed, photographed and given a number.
( ) 93. Why did the worker mention the rice disease of the 1970s?
A. To show how a stored seed can save lives.
B. To show that seed banks cost a lot of money.
C. To show that farmers often make mistakes.
D. To show that wild rice tastes better than other rice.
( ) 94. What does the worker mean by “We lose money”?
A. The seeds are very cheap to buy.
B. Nobody wants to buy seeds any more.
C. The law does not allow seeds to be sold.

( ) 95. Where is this passage most probably from?

第 20 篇 Why We Admire
【Unit 2 提升篇 · Unit 2 · E 议论文 · 306 词】
Ask a group of students who they admire, and you will hear the same names: the fastest runner, the richest businessman, the singer with the most followers. We are used to admiring people who win.
Winning is easy to see. A gold medal can be photographed. A high score can be printed. But the things that make a person worth admiring are often not visible at all.
Think about the last time you worked hard at something and failed. Perhaps you trained for weeks and still did not make the team; perhaps you studied for a test and still got a low mark. Now think about what you did the next day. Did you get up and try again? Most people who are worth admiring answered yes to that question many times in their lives. Their real achievement is not a single result. It is a habit.
There is another problem with admiring only success. Success depends partly on luck and on things we cannot control. A young musician may be just as talented as a famous one, and simply never meet the right people. If we admire only the famous, we learn the wrong lesson: we learn that being noticed matters more than being good.
So what should we look for? First, look for people who keep their promises when it is inconvenient. Second, look for people who are honest about what they cannot do. Third, look for people who make the people around them better — a classmate who explains a difficult question, a parent who listens after a long day, a teacher who stays late.
You will not see these people on a poster. But they are the ones who quietly hold the world together. And the more carefully you look at them, the more likely you are to become one of them.
( ) 96. What do students usually answer when they are asked who they admire?
A. Their parents and their teachers.
B. Scientists and doctors.
C. People who win — runners, businessmen and singers with many followers.
D. Nobody, because they do not admire anyone.
( ) 97. According to the writer, what is the real achievement of admirable people?
A. One single great result.
B. A large amount of money.
C. The chance to be photographed.
D. A habit of getting up and trying again.
( ) 98. What is the problem with admiring only success?
A. It teaches us that being noticed matters more than being good.
B. It makes people work too hard.
C. It makes famous people unhappy.
D. It is against the rules of most schools.
( ) 99. Why does the writer mention “the last time you worked hard and failed”?
A. To show that the writer knows the reader very well.
B. To make readers recall a personal experience, so that the argument is easier to accept.
C. To give a fact about how schools are run.
D. To introduce a completely new topic.
( ) 100. What is the writer’s main message?
A. We should admire the qualities behind a person’s life, not only their results.
B. Only successful people should be admired.
C. Luck is the most important thing in life.
D. Posters should show more ordinary people.
【生词注释】followers 关注者 visible 看得见的 talented 有天赋的 inconvenient 不方便的
