What started as a simple gesture has now grown into a nationwide movement. When his grandfather passed away in 2014, middle-schooler Jacob Cramer started volunteering at a local senior living community to ease his sadness. He quickly made friends with some people living there. He really liked an energetic elderly lady named Cynthia. “I often feel so lonely, Jacob,” Cynthia once told Jacob, explaining that her niece calls occasionally but she gets very few visitors and never receives letters in the mail. Jacob’s heart broke, and he decided to do something to help Cynthia. So he wrote his friend a letter and read it to her. Cynthia was full of joy as her tears flowed. Jacob realized that many seniors were on their own. “Can I help them feel less alone?” he wondered. Inspired, Jacob called communities to find more seniors who would like to receive letters, and began writing and mailing out hundreds of letters. After one nursing home sent Jacob photos of residents smiling with their letters, he wanted to do more. So in 2015, with help from his parents, Jacob started the nonprofit Love for Our Elders. Over the years, his organization has drawn volunteers from around the country to write 800,000 handwritten letters. At first, the letters were not written to anyone in particular and mass letter-sending was adopted. But starting in 2021, people could write letters to specific seniors featured on Love for Our Elders, which gives an introduction to each resident’s situation and interests. Letter-writers can then mail their letters — which typically include jokes, a little information about themselves and inspiring messages — directly to the seniors’ families, who will pass the letters along to the elderly people. “This project has shown me how kind people can be,” says Jacob, now 24 and a Yale University graduate. “It’s not just a letter — it’s something very powerful.” 4. Why did Jacob take up volunteer work at first? A. To meet new friends. B. To relieve his own grief. C. To develop social skills. D. To help lonely seniors out. 5. What can we learn about Cynthia? A. She has little daily company. B. She often writes to her niece. C. She works in the community. D. She loves reading old letters. 6. How did Jacob’s activity develop after 2015? A. It mainly served local nursing homes. B. It focused on taking photos of elders. C. It attracted more helpers nationwide. D. It stopped regular mass letter-sending. 7. What is Jacob’s attitude towards the project now? A. It needs more government support. B. It has made him a national celebrity. C. It carries meaning beyond the letters. D. It proves pretty hard to keep running. B 5. A 6. C 7. 根据原文第二段“When his grandfather passed away in 2014, middle-schooler Jacob Cramer started volunteering at a local senior living community to ease his sadness.(2014年雅各布的祖父去世后,还是中学生的雅各布·克拉默开始在当地的老年社区做志愿者,以此缓解自己的悲伤)”可知,雅各布最初做志愿者是为了缓解祖父离世给自己带来的悲痛。 根据原文第三段““I often feel so lonely, Jacob,” Cynthia once told Jacob, explaining that her niece calls occasionally but she gets very few visitors and never receives letters in the mail.(“雅各布,我经常感到很孤独。”辛西娅曾经给雅各布说道,她解释说她的侄女偶尔会打电话,但是她几乎没有访客,也从来没有收到过邮寄来信)”可推知,辛西娅日常很少有人陪伴。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据原文第四段“So in 2015, with help from his parents, Jacob started the nonprofit Love for Our Elders. Over the years, his organization has drawn volunteers from around the country to write 800,000 handwritten letters.(因此在2015年,在父母的帮助下,雅各布成立了非营利组织“关爱老年人”。多年来,他的组织吸引了来自全国各地的志愿者,一共写下了80万封手写信)”可知,2015年后雅各布的活动吸引了全国范围内越来越多的志愿者参与其中。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据原文最后一段雅各布的话“It’s not just a letter — it’s something very powerful.(这不仅仅是一封信,它拥有非常强大的力量)”可推知,雅各布认为这个项目的意义已经超越了信件本身,给人们带来了爱与温暖。 C In some cities, as many as one in four office spaces are empty. Some start-ups are giving them a second life. Vertical (垂直的) indoor farms — where crops can be grown in climate-controlled environments using the latest planting techniques — have been popping up around the world. The open-plan nature of most modern offices makes them suitable for indoor farm use. Still, repurposing, particularly to ensure a space can accommodate the proper equipment and has proper electrical, heating, ventilation (通风), and air conditioning systems, can be difficult. The Calgary Tower Project, developed by the company Agriplay Ventures, has worked to overcome these challenges. Agriplay uses 1-by-2.5m modular racks (有标准组件的架子) rising up to 3m tall, which can easily adapt to any space with ventilation. The racks are also easy to remove once a project is completed. Unoccupied office buildings are often close to final consumers. In a former paper storage warehouse in Arlington, about a mile outside of Washington, D. C., Area 2 Farms is growing over 180 organic varieties of green vegetables. By serving consumers within 10 miles or less, the company has driven down transport costs and any associated carbon footprint. Energy use, however, is the “Achilles’ heel” of this field, says Fraser. Vertical farms need a lot of electricity to run lighting and ventilation systems, smart devices, and automated harvesting technologies. “But if energy is sourced from renewable sources, they can outperform regular farms in this regard, too,” he says. They face other challenges, too. And, for now, aside from leafy greens, most indoor facilities cannot yet mass produce other types of crops like wheat, corn or rice. “One thing cities dislike is unused spaces that don’t drive economic growth,” says Fraser. “If indoor farm projects in cities like Arlington prove successful, others may follow suit.” 8. What can be learned about Agriplay? A. It helps clients locate storage areas. B. It develops new planting techniques. C. It focuses on maintaining office buildings. D. It offers equipment suited for indoor farming. 9. What does the author indicate by mentioning Arlington? A. The achievements of Area 2 Farms. B. The benefits of urban indoor farms. C. The significance of vertical farming. D. The popularity of organic vegetables. 10. Which word is closest in meaning to “Achilles’ heel” underlined in paragraph 5? A. Core. B. Future. C. Weakness. D. Advantage. 11. What might be the best title for the text? A. The Rise of Organic Farms B. A New Life for Empty Offices C. A Bright Future for City Farmers D. The World of High-Tech Agriculture 【答案】8. D 9. B 10. C 11. 根据第二段“The open-plan nature of most modern offices makes them suitable for indoor farm use. Still, repurposing, particularly to ensure a space can accommodate the proper equipment and has proper electrical, heating, ventilation (通风), and air conditioning systems, can be difficult.(大多数现代办公室的开放式性质使它们适合室内农场使用。然而,重新利用,特别是确保一个空间可以容纳适当的设备,并有适当的电力、供暖、通风和空调系统,可能是困难的。)”以及第三段中“The Calgary Tower Project, developed by the company Agriplay Ventures, has worked to overcome these challenges. Agriplay uses 1-by-2.5m modular racks (有标准组件的架子) rising up to 3m tall, which can easily adapt to any space with ventilation.(由Agriplay Ventures公司开发的卡尔加里大厦项目已经努力克服了这些挑战。Agriplay使用 1×2.5 米、最高3米的模块化种植架,可适配任何有通风条件的场地。)”可知,Agriplay提供适配室内农场改造的设备。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中“Unoccupied office buildings are often close to final consumers. In a former paper storage warehouse in Arlington, about a mile outside of Washington, D. C., Area 2 Farms is growing over 180 organic varieties of green vegetables. By serving consumers within 10 miles or less, the company has driven down transport costs and any associated carbon footprint.(空置的办公楼通常离最终消费者很近。在华盛顿特区外约一英里的阿灵顿,一个曾经的纸张仓库里,2区农场种植了180多种有机绿色蔬菜。通过为10英里以内的消费者提供服务,该公司降低了运输成本和相关的碳足迹。)”可知,作者举阿灵顿的例子是为了说明城市室内农场(依托闲置城市建筑)的优势。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第五段中“Energy use, however, is the “Achilles’ heel” of this field, says Fraser. Vertical farms need a lot of electricity to run lighting and ventilation systems, smart devices, and automated harvesting technologies.(然而,能源使用是该领域的“Achilles’ heel”,弗雷泽说。垂直农场需要大量电力维持照明、通风、智能设备和自动采收设备运转)”可知,能源消耗是垂直农场目前的短板,Achilles’ heel意为“弱点、缺陷”,与weakness 同义。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“In some cities, as many as one in four office spaces are empty. Some start-ups are giving them a second life. Vertical (垂直的) indoor farms — where crops can be grown in climate-controlled environments using the latest planting techniques — have been popping up around the world.(在一些城市,多达四分之一的办公空间是空置的。一些初创企业正在赋予它们第二次生命。垂直室内农场——农作物可以使用最新的种植技术在气候可控的环境中种植——在世界各地不断涌现)”并结合全文内容可知,全文围绕闲置办公室改造为室内农场获得新生展开,介绍了这种改造的优势、面临的挑战以及发展前景。B选项“A New Life for Empty Offices(空置办公室的新生)”概括了文章的主题,适合作为最佳标题。 D As the new robot called Sprout walks around a Manhattan office, nodding its rectangular head, lifting its swinging “eyebrows” and offering to shake your hand with its grippers (钳子), it looks nothing like the shiny and threatening humanoids built by some companies. Sprout’s charm is the point. A 5-year-old child could comfortably talk at eye level with this humanoid, which stands 1 meter tall and has a soft exterior of sage-green foam. Developed by Fauna Robotics over two years, Sprout aims to jump — start a whole new industry of building “approachable” robots for homes, schools and social spaces. If its emotive expressions and blinking lights seem slightly familiar, it might be from generations of Star Wars robots and other robotic companions dreamed up in animation studios and children’s literature. “Most people in this industry take inspiration from the science fiction that we grew up with,” said Fauna Robotics co-founder and CEO Rob Cochran. “I think some do so from Westworld and Terminator. We do from WALL-E, Baymax and Rosie Jetson.” Sprout can’t lift heavy objects, but it can dance the Twist or the Floss, grab a toy block or teddy bear, or stand up from a chair to take a long walk along the wooden floors. It walks slowly but steadily on uneven ground. Only once did it come close to tripping when taking a sharp turn to avoid a person. Its foot hit a table wheel so low that it could not be seen by Sprout’s camera eyes. But the robot, built to handle disturbances, quickly recovered its balance and kept walking, much like a clumsy person might. Starting a robot company can be unforgiving, especially one designing personal robots. What happens next with Sprout will depend on how developers experiment with it and what they learn. For Cochran, some of the most important “judges” have already given their approval. In a home video he keeps on his phone, his 2-year-old twins excitedly jump up and down as Sprout greets them. 12. What is a key feature of the robot Sprout? A. It is built mainly for heavy lifting. B. It moves more quickly than other robots. C. It wears bright shiny metal covers. D. It has a friendly and childlike appearance. 13. What inspired the design of Sprout according to the passage? A. Robotic images in animated works. B. Industrial robots for social spaces. C. Tools used in ordinary households. D. Characters from adventure novels. 14. How did Sprout react to the fall risk? A. It stopped walking at once. B. It regained balance quickly. C. It asked people for assistance. D. It released a warning signal. 15. What is Cochran’s attitude towards the future of personal robots? A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Positive. D 13. A 14. B 15. 根据第一段中的“A 5-year-old child could comfortably talk at eye level with this humanoid, which stands 1 meter tall and has a soft exterior of sage‑green foam.(一个五岁孩子可以和这个人形机器人平视交流,它高一米,外表是灰绿色柔软泡沫材质。)” 根据第二段中“If its emotive expressions and blinking lights seem slightly familiar, it might be from generations of Star Wars robots and other robotic companions dreamed up in animation studios and children’s literature.(如果它富有情绪的表情和闪烁灯光看着有点熟悉,那或许源自《星球大战》系列机器人以及动画工作室、儿童文学中构想的各类机器人伙伴。)” 根据第三段中的“But the robot, built to handle disturbances, quickly recovered its balance and kept walking, much like a clumsy person might.(但这台为应对意外状况而设计的机器人迅速恢复平衡,继续行走,就像一个动作笨拙的人那样。)” 根据最后一段中的“For Cochran, some of the most important “judges” have already given their approval. In a home video he keeps on his phone, his 2‑year‑old twins excitedly jump up and down as Sprout greets them.(对科克伦而言,一些最重要的“评判者”已经给出认可。在他手机保存的家庭视频里,他两岁的双胞胎看到Sprout打招呼时兴奋地蹦蹦跳跳。)” 可推知,科克伦对人形个人机器人的未来持积极态度。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 In a world driven by test scores and productivity, art is often seen as a luxury or an elective. But recent research suggests this common assumption is mistaken. ____16____ They build stronger creative thinking and emotional intelligence through these pursuits. One study even found that art participants scored 20% higher on empathy tests. Why does art have such a powerful effect on young minds? ____17____ When a child paints or plays an instrument, the brain must coordinate perception (感知), movement, memory, and emotion all at once. A 2024 Swiss study of over 2,000 children found that those receiving regular arts training consistently outperformed their peers in problem-solving tasks. ____18____ Children often struggle to put complex feelings into words. Art gives them another language to express their own inner world. Through colors, sounds, or movements, they can express what they cannot otherwise share. This process helps them understand and manage their own moods — a skill vital for mental health. The value of art extends well into adulthood as well. In an age when AI can generate content from existing information, uniquely human strengths — imagination, original thinking, moral judgment — are becoming more valuable. Art education nurtures (培养) exactly these essential human qualities. Students with art backgrounds learn to approach problems without ready-made answers. ____19____ That is why art education deserves a central place in our schools. Policymakers and parents should no longer see art as an extra thing. Instead, they need to recognize it as an essential part of the school curriculum. ____20____ Engagement with artistic pursuits builds creativity, empathy, and the inner strength to face life’s challenges. A. Art, in essence, is about making better human beings. B. Much of the explanation lies in how the human brain works. C. Some educators argue that art is difficult to measure in standardized tests. D. Another benefit is that art provides a safe space for emotional expression. E. Math and science courses are always prioritized over art classes in most schools. F. They embrace uncertainty, which prepares them for careers that no machine can replace. G. It shows students engaged in regular artistic activities such as drawing or music gain clear benefits. G 17. B 18. D 19. F 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“In a world driven by test scores and productivity, art is often seen as a luxury or an elective. But recent research suggests this common assumption is mistaken.(在这个唯分数、重生产力的时代,艺术常常被视作一种非必需的奢侈品或是一门可选副科。但近期研究表明,这种普遍看法存在误区。)”和下文“They build stronger creative thinking and emotional intelligence through these pursuits.(孩子们参与艺术类活动,能锻炼出更出色的创造性思维与情商。)” 【17题详解】 根据上文“Why does art have such a powerful effect on young minds?(为什么艺术能对青少年的心智产生如此深远的影响?) ”和下文“When a child paints or plays an instrument, the brain must coordinate perception (感知), movement, memory, and emotion all at once.(当孩子画画或是演奏乐器时,大脑需要同时协调感知、肢体动作、记忆与情绪。)” 【18题详解】 根据下文“Children often struggle to put complex feelings into words. Art gives them another language to express their own inner world.(孩子们常常难以用语言诉说复杂的情绪,而艺术为他们提供了另一种表达内心世界的途径。)” 【19题详解】 根据上文“In an age when AI can generate content from existing information, uniquely human strengths — imagination, original thinking, moral judgment — are becoming more valuable. Art education nurtures (培养) exactly these essential human qualities. Students with art backgrounds learn to approach problems without ready-made answers.(在如今这个人工智能仅凭现有信息就能生成内容的时代,想象力、原创思维、道德判断这些人类独有的优势正变得愈发珍贵。而艺术教育培养的恰恰就是这些不可或缺的人类特质。有艺术学习背景的学生,懂得在没有现成标准答案的情况下思考、解决问题。)”可知,艺术生具有不可或缺的人类特质,F选项“他们接纳不确定性,这让他们能胜任机器无法取代的工作。”中的They指代上文Students with art backgrounds, embrace uncertainty对应上文without ready-made answers。 【20题详解】 根据上文“Instead, they need to recognize it as an essential part of the school curriculum.(相反,他们应当认识到艺术是学校课程中不可或缺的一部分。)”和下文“Engagement with artistic pursuits builds creativity, empathy, and the inner strength to face life’s challenges.(投身各类艺术活动能够培养创造力、共情能力,以及直面人生磨难的内心力量。)” The prize may belong to the fastest. Daniel, from North Ridge High, was known by his classmates as someone who would rather ____24____ others than gain attention for himself. The race went ____25____ at first. With less than one kilometre to go, however, Marcus ____26____ on a loose stone. Then he lost his ____27____ and fell, badly hurting his knee. “I heard a ____28____ sound and felt something go wrong,” Daniel later recalled. Marcus tried to wave and ____29____ Daniel to pass him and keep going. For most athletes, crossing the line first is the main ____30____. But in that moment, winning suddenly seemed less ____31____ to Daniel. As he reached Marcus, he saw the pain on his face and heard his short, ____32____ breaths. Instead of running ahead, Daniel stopped and put Marcus’s arm over his ____33____. Having moved from Shanghai just three months ago, he felt the party was his first real chance to make friends. His mother had spent the entire morning in their tiny apartment kitchen carefully preparing a gift: homemade mooncakes wrapped in red paper decorated with dragon patterns. “In China, red brings good luck and the dragon represents strength,” she said proudly. “These mooncakes carry our family’s blessings.” At the party, colorful balloons danced along the ceiling (天花板), and the living room was filled with the latest pop songs. Li Wei noticed everyone’s gifts piled (堆放) on a table, and he placed his gift on the top, whose traditional appearance stood out among the gifts. He looked around and found that most of the faces were unfamiliar. So he sat down and listened to the music, waiting excitedly for that big moment — opening the gifts. Soon it came. In the cheers of her friends, Emma walked over to the table. Her eyes were immediately drawn to Li Wei’s uniquely wrapped gift. However, when she opened it, silence fell as she stared at the unfamiliar pastries (糕点). “What…are these?” she asked hesitantly. A boy leaned over and laughed loudly, “Looks like play-dough (橡皮泥)!” Heat rushed to Li Wei’s face as he stammered (结结巴巴地说), “They’re traditional Chinese mooncakes ...” However, his voice was swallowed (淹没) by the laughter that followed. Someone even whispered, “This might be leftovers from his home. He must think it’s a picnic outing.” Li Wei’s heart sank. He didn’t expect that his well-intended gift — a gesture of love, now turned into something strange and unwelcome in this foreign setting. The joyful atmosphere disappeared quickly, replaced by an uncomfortable silence as guests looked at the mooncakes as if they were strange objects from another world. Just as Li Wei wished he could disappear, he suddenly remembered what his mother had said with pride before he came here. He quickly calmed down. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Three months later, Li Wei and his mooncakes appeared at school’s International Food Fair. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 He quickly calmed down. He took a deep breath and decided to introduce the mooncakes. “Mooncakes are very important in Chinese culture,” he began, his voice steady. “They are round, symbolizing reunion. We eat them during the Mid-Autumn Festival to celebrate family togetherness. Each bite is full of sweet fillings, just like the warmth of a family gathering.” As he spoke, the room fell silent. People listened intently, their curiosity piqued. Some started to nod in understanding, and the awkward atmosphere gradually faded away. Emma took a small bite of the mooncake and her eyes widened in surprise. “It’s delicious!” she exclaimed. Others followed suit, and soon, the laughter turned into praises. Three months later, Li Wei and his mooncakes appeared at school’s International Food Fair. His booth was decorated with red lanterns and Chinese knots. People queued up to taste his mooncakes. Li Wei introduced the mooncakes with confidence, sharing the cultural significance behind them. Many students and teachers were deeply attracted. They not only enjoyed the sweet taste of the mooncakes but also learned about Chinese traditions. His mooncakes became the star of the fair. Li Wei was overjoyed. He realized that cultural differences could be bridged through sharing and understanding, and his little mooncakes had become a wonderful bridge to connect different cultures. 词汇激活: 行为类 ①开始:begin/start ②象征:symbolize/represent ③意识到:realize/become aware of 情绪类 ①尴尬:awkward/embarrassed ②惊讶地:in surprise/in amazement/in astonishment 【点睛】[高分句型1] They are round, symbolizing reunion.(运用了现在分词作伴随状语) [高分句型2] As he spoke, the room fell silent. C In some cities, as many as one in four office spaces are empty. The World of High-Tech Agriculture D As the new robot called Sprout walks around a Manhattan office, nodding its rectangular head, lifting its swinging “eyebrows” and offering to shake your hand with its grippers (钳子), it looks nothing like the shiny and threatening humanoids built by some companies. F. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
