Here are some of the charming book towns from around the world that every book lover or collector should explore.
Hay-on-Wye
A quiet revolution began in 1961 when Richard Booth started to fill the empty buildings in his hometown in Wales with secondhand books to sell. Soon, people from across the United Kingdom flooded this sleepy village. As word of his success spread, more villages and towns around the world followed suit.
Torup
Torup, which is situated 60 kilometers north of Denmark’s capital of Copenhagen, has a population of 374 people. Here, locals put out the best and most high-quality secondhand books from donations out for sale in the 10 “shops” along the rural roads. These “shops” include a garage, a workman’s shelter and even a bookshelf at a farm entrance. All the transactions are processed on a self-help and honesty basis where customers leave their money in a jar in exchange for their purchases.
St-Pierre-de-Clages
Offering year-round book exhibitions and literary activities for children, the village of St-Pierre-de-Clages is home to Switzerland’s only book town. Since 1993, a book festival has been hosted every last weekend of August and has attracted visitors from all over French-speaking Switzerland and neighbors. It also offers insight into book-related professions such as illustration and old printing techniques. So, it has become a welcoming space for writers and publishing houses to meet and for various artists to display their work.
Wünsdorf-Waldstadt
Located about 20 kilometers south of Berlin, Wünsdorf-Waldstadt offers year-round events, including readings, book exhibitions, military vehicle shows and guided tours. This town was especially known for its three large shops that have a huge collection of ancient books on topics such as poetry, philosophy, classical literature, and many more.
1. What can we know about Richard Booth?

B
In a village a few kilometres from the West Flanders coast, Nele Bekaert fetches one of several Brabant horses that her family owns. Weighing about a ton, the powerful horse is ideal for pulling a drag net to catch tiny, grey shrimp (虾) in the North Sea. Bekaert rides the horse to the seaside of Oostduinkerke, Belgium.
Upon arrival, she puts on bright yellow waterproof overalls and ties ropes and a large net behind the horse. Two baskets are placed at the animal’s sides. Bekaert skillfully seats herself between the baskets. She leads the horse into the sea until the water reaches the top parts of its legs and they slowly move parallel to the coastline, causing a unique scene. A metal chain attached to the front of the net over the sand, creating “shockwaves” that cause shrimp to jump into the net, while water pressure pushes the catch to the back.
After about 30 minutes, Bekaert and her “co-worker” return to shore. She empties the net, washes and sorts the catch, keeping shrimp and fish that are fully grown, while releasing the small-sized shrimp and baby crabs back into the sea. This helps maintain biodiversity and prevents the unintentional capture of non- target species.
Bekaert is part of a team of 14 active horseback shrimp fishers, formerly known as East Dunkirk Horse Fishers. Each year in Oostduinkerke, they give 36 public demonstrations and participate in a Shrimp Festival, events funded by the government to keep the craft alive.
Nowadays, the old-fashioned method has been entirely replaced by commercial development except in Oostduinkerke. That is thanks to former mayor (市长) Honoré Loones, who saved horseback shrimp fishing from extinction in 1950 by making it a tourist attraction with the first Shrimp Festival. The craft has been supported by the government ever since.
The East Dunkirk Horse Fishers play a vital role in promoting the craft. Members travel for demonstrations at events across Europe. “The tradition is very important,” Bekaert notes. “I’m happy to help preserve and share it.”
4. What makes Bekaert’s shrimp fishing unusual?
A. Her fishing on horseback. B. Her plastic fishing net.
C. Her protective equipment. D. Her fishing off the coast.
5. Which word can best describe Bekaert’s method of sorting the catch?
A. Labor-saving. B. Profit-oriented. C. Sustainable. D. Efficient.
6. Why do the shrimp fishers give so many public demonstrations?
A. To work hard to survive. B. To pass down the ancient fishing skill.
C. To raise funds for the government. D. To commercialize the Shrimp Festival.
7. What can we infer about horseback shrimp fishing?
A. It is expected to die out soon. B. It boosts the global tourism industry.
C. It faced extinction in the past. D. It has threatened commercial fishing.

A new study out of King’s College London is giving people more of a reason than ever to plan a museum date. It was conducted by the researchers from the university, who got half of the participants, including 50 volunteers, aged 18 to 40, to view pieces by world-famous artists Manet, Van Gogh, and Gauguin in The Courtauld Gallery in London. The control group, on the other hand, looked at copies of the same artworks in a non-gallery environment.
All of the participants’ heart rate variability and skin temperatures were measured with sensors throughout the 20-minute art-viewing sessions, and saliva (唾液) samples were also taken before and after viewing.
The researchers found that cortisol levels — a key stress hormone (荷尔蒙) in the human body — fell by an average of 22% in the gallery group, compared to just 8% in the control group. The participants viewing original art in the gallery also had more active heart activity, which shows that art attracts the body. Another key finding was that pro-inflammatory (促炎症) proteins IL-6 and TNF-alpha also dropped by 30% and 28% respectively for those viewing art in galleries, with no observable changes for the control group.
“Stress hormones and inflammatory markers like IL-6 and TNF-alpha are related to many health problems, from heart disease to anxiety and depression,” explained Dr. Tony Woods, the study’s senior author. “The fact that viewing original art lowered these markers suggests that cultural experiences may play a real role in protecting both mind and body.”
Other previous studies have linked regular gallery visits to long-term well-being, but this study is the first to “capture real-time physiological benefits”, which shows an immediate positive impact. “This study proves for the first time that art really is good for you. What’s particularly exciting is that the findings show these benefits are pervasive — they can be experienced by anyone,” said Jenny Waldman, the director of Art Fund. “We want to encourage everyone to make time to visit their local museum or gallery, and discover just how good art can make you feel.”
8. What does the new study focus on?
A. Differences between artistic styles. B. Participants’ preferences for artists.
C. Effects of art on various environments. D. Participants’ physical reactions to art.
9. What is a finding of the study about viewing original art?
A. It mainly improves creative thinking.
B. It changes participants’ health indicators.
C. It demands a certain art appreciation level.
D. It has the greatest impact on mental health.
10. What does the underlined word “pervasive” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Surprising. B. Predictable. C. Universal. D. Continuous.
11. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Museum Trips Bring Immediate Benefits. B. Copying Masterpieces Lowers Stress.
C. London Leads World Gallery Tours. D. Sensors Reveal Visitors’ Secrets.
D
When Brandon Contino and co-founder Dan Chi were developing Four Growers’ produce-harvesting robots, they practically lived in a greenhouse for an entire year. “We actually started just running everything off a laptop, and I would be there in the row coding. Chi would be making changes mechanically,” Contino, now CEO, told TechCrunch.
The result was Four Growers, which builds robots designed to autonomously harvest plants in greenhouses. The robots are programmed to identify produce at the right level of ripeness — which varies depending on a farmer’s needs — by using multiple stereo cameras to see the crops and help operate the robot’s arms to avoid nonripe fruit on the vine. The tech currently works with tomatoes and will be commercially available to harvest other crops like cucumbers in the near future.
Having enough labor to harvest crops is crucial because if crops can’t be harvested when they are ready, they rot and result in lost profits for the farm. The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture’s 2024 labor report said the industry is facing a “critical shortage” of workers, and it won’t get better anytime soon.
Contino said they were intentional about focusing on greenhouse farms. Unlike outdoor farms, greenhouses can grow almost all year round, and are more efficient than outside farms. They also harvest on a much more frequent schedule than outdoor farms, which makes them a good candidate to buy tech.
Four Growers now works with five customers, and its robots have picked millions of tomatoes. Contino said that the company is working to expand its technology beyond just harvesting and is looking to expand into outdoor farms in the coming years. “It’s not really a labor replacement. It’s more of an augmentation (增强),” Contino said. “As the labor force shrinks, and there are fewer people willing to do it, it’s putting them to more comfortable positions and allowing one person to be able to do a lot more.”
12. What are the cameras used to do in the greenhouse?
A. Identify crops’ maturity. B. Take pictures for the ripe fruit.
C. Monitor the surroundings. D. Distinguish tomatoes from other plants.
13. Why does the author mention the 2024 labor report in paragraph 3?
A. To express concern about the farm profits.
B. To stress the necessity of harvesting robots.
C. To show the achievements of Four Growers.
D. To call for public support for the farm industry.
14. According to Contino, what makes greenhouse farms a better target for Four Growers?
A. A wider range of crops. B. Greener than outside farms.
C. A greater number of consumers. D. Higher harvesting frequency.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Autonomous Tech is Coming to Farming.
B. Seed for a Farm’s Future — Farm Management.
C. Four Growers Robots Help Greenhouse Harvest.
D. Labor Shortages and Farmer Adaptation Strategies.

Picture this: everyone’s gathered around the table, plates full, but half the family stares at glowing screens instead of each other’s faces. This scene plays out in countless homes across America every single night. What started as occasional phone checks has evolved into overall device dependency that follows families right to their dining table.

The cell phone transformed from a communication tool into a dining companion. ____18____ Unlike real conversation, screens demand attention without giving anything meaningful back to the family dynamic.
The physical health consequences are equally concerning. Mindless eating becomes the norm when attention splits between food and screens. People eat faster, chew less, and often consume more calories without realizing it. ____19____
Creating a phone-free zone can transform food time from a rushed obligation into genuine family time that everyone looks forward to. When screens disappear from the table, something magical happens: People start noticing each other again. ____20____ Even the food tastes better when everyone is fully engaged in what they’re eating.

As I unzipped my lunchbox, the whole place was turned into a spicy curry (咖喱) dream. I immediately hid it under my seat, hoping no one would take notice.
Mom had really outdone herself with masala — our family’s all-time favorite dish back in India. But today, it wasn’t just about me and my lunch. A warm smile on his face, Ricky invited me, a new transfer student from India to New York city, for lunch.
“Ava, come sit here!” Ricky called out, gesturing towards a vacant seat.
As I made my way over, memories of those awkward lunchtimes when I studied in Kansas, one of the most conservative states, flooded back. I could still recall how everyone would wrinkle their noses and stare curiously when I unpacked my Indian food. It always made me feel like an outsider, like I didn’t belong.
Therefore, before my first day in this school, I had demanded my mom pack “normal” western-style food for me. I still remembered the look on her face upon hearing it, as she sighed in disappointment and confusion, “Isn’t there a moment when you feel proud of your origin?” That was hurting, but not more hurting than others’ giggles and whispers. Honestly, long queues were common in Indian restaurants in New York city, a cultural melting pot, but I wouldn’t take that risk.
Unfortunately, this morning, Mom had forgotten to make sandwich or any “normal” food, so I had to bring leftovers from our dinner. At the thought of the possible oh-no-second (社死), I felt like being thrown into darkness.
However, before I came back to reality, Ricky noticed my sneaking (躲躲藏藏). “What do you have for lunch?” he asked, his eyes twinkling with interest. I tried to brush it off (搪塞), claiming I wasn’t hungry. But Ricky wouldn’t let it go, and before I could protest, he had the lid of my lunchbox open and I prepared myself for such familiar responses as “Ew” or “What is that?”
注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, I did not get what I was expecting.

【答案】4. A 5. C 6. B 7. C

根据第二段中“Bekaert skillfully seats herself between the baskets. She leads the horse into the sea until the water reaches the top parts of its legs and they slowly move parallel to the coastline, causing a unique scene.(Bekaert灵巧地坐在篮子之间。她将马儿引向大海,直到海水淹没马腿的上部,它们缓缓与海岸线平行移动,形成了一幅独特的景象)”可知,Bekaert捕虾的方式之所以独特是因为她骑在马背上捕虾。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段内容“She empties the net, washes and sorts the catch, keeping shrimp and fish that are fully grown, while releasing the small-sized shrimp and baby crabs back into the sea. This helps maintain biodiversity and prevents the unintentional capture of non-target species.(她将网中的渔获倒出,清洗并分类,保留完全成熟的虾和鱼,同时将体型较小的虾和幼蟹放回海中。这有助于维持生物多样性,并防止意外捕获非目标物种)”可知,Bekaert在捕捞时只留下那些完全长成的鱼和虾。其他小虾和小蟹放归大海,这有助于维持生物多样性,是一种可持续的渔获分类方式。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Each year in Oostduinkerke, they give 36 public demonstrations and participate in a Shrimp Festival, events funded by the government to keep the craft alive.(每年在Oostduinkerke,他们都会举办36场面向公众的骑马捕虾技艺演示,并参加捕虾节,这些活动由政府资助,以维持这项手工艺的传承)”和最后一段中““The tradition is very important,” Bekaert notes. “I’m happy to help preserve and share it.”(“传统非常重要,”Bekaert指出,“我很乐意帮助保护和传承它。”)”可知,Bekaert和其他的渔民们每年进行多场马背捕虾表演的目的是延续这种古老的传统。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“That is thanks to former mayor (市长) Honoré Loones, who saved horseback shrimp fishing from extinction in 1950 by making it a tourist attraction with the first Shrimp Festival.(这要归功于前市长Honoré Loones,他在1950年通过举办第一届虾节使骑马捕虾成为旅游景点,从而使其免于灭绝。)”可知,这要感谢前任市长洛内斯,他在1950年创办了第一届虾节,使马背捕虾成为一个旅游热点,免于灭绝。这说明在过去马背捕虾曾面临灭绝的风险。

【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. C

Picture this: everyone’s gathered around the table, plates full, but half the family stares at glowing screens instead of each other’s faces. This scene plays out in countless homes across America every single night. What started as occasional phone checks has evolved into overall device dependency that follows families right to their dining table.
Remember when meals meant storytelling, laughter, and actual eye contact? ____16____ Before smartphones existed, families naturally gathered around the dining table to share their day, discuss plans, and enjoy each other’s company.
____17____ Research shows that the average American family spends less than 20 minutes eating dinner together, with much of that time spent interacting with screens. The cell phone transformed from a communication tool into a dining companion. ____18____ Unlike real conversation, screens demand attention without giving anything meaningful back to the family dynamic.

【答案】One possible version:
Ranking Factors in Career Choice
When considering future career choices, I rank interest, salary and stability.
Interest comes first. A job aligned with my passion motivates me to explore deeply and grow continuously. Salary ranks second, as it ensures a decent living and supports my family. However, it shouldn’t be the sole pursuit. Stability comes last. While job security matters, I believe passion and growth matter more in the long run.
In conclusion, a satisfying career depends on arranging these factors in the right order. By putting interest and salary first and also taking stability into consideration, we can achieve true career happiness.

注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右;

After school, I found Mom preparing sandwich for tomorrow’s lunch.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】However, I did not get what I was expecting. Ricky took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and savored the aroma of the masala. Instead of the usual stares and whispers, there was only interest on Ricky’s face. His face lit up with a broad smile, asking, “You mum made masala for your lunch?” Before I could make a response, he added: “I could be dying of envy! You know what, last Sunday, my parents and I queued up for three hours in harsh cold in fifth Avenue for the new India restaurant.” He enjoyed every bite, nodding his head in approval. It was a welcome change from the stares and whispers I had grown accustomed to.
After school, I found Mom preparing sandwich for tomorrow’s lunch. I came over and asked if I could have palak paneer in my lunchbox, which made her a bit confused. Finally, I told her about my experience with Ricky and how he had enjoyed my food. Mom’s face lit up with joy. “I’m glad he liked it,” she said. “And I’m even happier that you’re starting to feel proud of your roots again.” She paused and looked at me seriously. “Your culture, your traditions, and your food are all a part of who you are.” I nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. Mom’s words had given me the courage to embrace my identity and share my culture with others.
