When you go to Australia, you can always hear something like this, “I am dead set against the plan!” What does the speaker mean by saying it? It’s an Australian slang (俚语), which means the speaker doesn’t agree with the plan strongly.
Australia is famous for its interesting and unusual slang. Even native English-speakers visiting Australia can have trouble understanding the locals because of their accents (口音) and the expressions they use. But some Australian slang expressions are used all over the world.
Selfie
The popularity of social media and smartphones has made selfie a very common English word. In 2013, Oxford Dictionaries made it the “Word of the Year”, and the US has a National Selfie Day.
But selfie was a part of Australian English long before it became popular in other countries. The earliest known use was in 2002 when an Australian college student posted a photo that he had taken of himself online, calling it a selfie.
The student, Nathan Hope, told ABC News that he didn’t make the word, but rather “it was just common slang in Australia at the time.”
Stoked
To be stoked is to be really happy or pleased. For example, you might say “I’m stoked!” if you’re excited about your holiday plans.
Along with other expressions, such as ripper, which means“very good” or“great”, stoked was first used by Australians in the 1960s and 1970s.
No worries
“No worries” is a common reply to “thank you”. For example, James, “Thanks for helping me.” Jessica, “No worries.”
So the next time someone thanks you, instead of “you’re welcome”, you can say “no worries” and they’ll know that you’re speaking Australian English.
28. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By listing numbers. B. By showing pictures.
C. By comparing (对比) facts. D. By asking questions.
29. What does the underlined word “stoked” mean in Paragraph 6?
A. Excited. B. Surprised. C. Interested. D. Worried.
30. Your football team won last Friday. What would your Australian friend say to you?
A. No selfies. B. You little ripper.
C. No worries. D. Dead set against the team.

Though Sylvia had grown up among tall buildings and busy streets, she had recently found herself more at home in the Maine countryside, where she had come to help her aging grandmother. She let the cow out to walk in the nearby fields every morning and led it back home in the evenings, staying with the woods and her animal neighbours every day.
One evening, when Sylvia walked back home from the fields, she saw a stranger coming out of the forest. When the man reached her, he explained that he was quite interested in collecting rare birds and was searching for the white heron (苍鹭) nesting (筑巢) in the area according to his book. He asked if he could stay at her house. Though Sylvia was a little bit worried, she led him to her grandmother.
Over dinner, Sylvia’s grandmother told the man how her son had loved making friends with animals while he enjoyed living in the wild and that Sylvia was just the same. On hearing the news, the man offered Sylvia a lot of money to help him find the white heron, telling her that he planned to shoot (打猎) and put it into his collection. Sylvia knew her grandmother had little savings, so she accepted.
The next day, Sylvia and the man searched the forest for the white heron, but they came back empty-handed. At first, Sylvia was afraid of the man’s shooting and collection plan. With some time passing by, she was surprised to find that he was a person with a warm heart and rich knowledge of birds. The two led the cow home together in the afternoon.
Just before bed, Sylvia remembered that one tree in the forest stood taller than the rest. If she managed to climb it, she would surely find the heron’s nest below. The thought made her so excited that she couldn’t sleep. She finally got out of the house in the early morning to find the heron before the man awoke.
Reaching the top of the tree was a success in itself, but nothing was more amazing than the moment Sylvia truly saw the heron. High as a bird, she felt she and the heron were one, and she suddenly realized she couldn’t be part of its death. The man was waiting for her when she returned home, but she refused to help him any longer.
Later, Sylvia wondered whether giving up the money — and the man’s friendship — was really worth (值得) the heron’s life, but the treasures she might have gained were easily forgotten among the beauty of the wild.

IS SUCCESS ABOUT LEARNING—OR SHOWING YOU’RE SMART?
Benjamin once said, “I don’t divide (分) the world into the weak and the strong, or the successes and the failures. I divide the world into the learners and nonlearners.”
What would make someone a nonlearner? Everyone is born with an intense drive (驱动力) to learn. Babies practise their skills daily, even the most difficult tasks of a lifetime, like learning to walk and talk. They never think it’s too hard. Babies don’t worry about making mistakes. They walk, they fall and they get up. They just move forward.
What could put an end to this kind of learning? The fixed mindset (固定的思维模式). As soon as children become able to evaluate(评价) themselves, some of them become afraid of hard tasks. They become afraid of not being smart. I have studied thousands of students, and you can’t believe how many people refuse a chance to learn.
We offered four-year-olds a choice (选择): They could red o an easy task or they could try a harder one. Even at this age, children with the fixed mindset—stuck with the safe one. Children with the growth mindset—the ones who believed you could get smarter by learning—thought it was a strange choice. Why are you asking me this? Why would anyone want to keep doing the same task over and over? They chose one hard one after another. “I’m dying to solve them!” one little girl said.
So children with the fixed mindset want to make sure they are successful. Smart people should always be successful. But for children with the growth mindset, success is about practising themselves. It’s about learning to become smarter.
One seventh-grade girl made a conclusion.“I think being smart is something you have to work for…it isn’t just given to you… Most kids, if they’re not sure of an answer, will not raise their hand to answer the question. But what I usually do is to raise my hand, because if I’m wrong, then my mistake will be corrected. Just by doing that I’m improving my ability.”
34. What does the writer want to tell by using the example of babies in Paragraph 2?
A. Walking and talking are very difficult. B. It’s easy for babies to learn different skills.
C. People are born with abilities to learn. D. Babies need to face many tasks every day.
35. Which of the following is a fixed mindset according to the passage?
A. Being happy with his own growth. B. Working hard and being thirsty to learn.
C. Avoiding showing how smart he is. D. Being afraid of facing different failures.
36. What does the girl mean by saying “I’m dying to solve them!”?
A. She can’t wait to give herself a task to practise. B. She thinks a healthy body can help learn better.
C. She believes it’s painful to solve the problems. D. She doesn’t find it difficult to finish these tasks.
37. What’s the main purpose of the passage?
A. Be a good learner in babyhood. B. Stay active when facing difficulties.
C. Show the importance of success. D. Make decisions and choices carefully.

Tongcheng City is in Anhui Province. It has rich culture. There are many famous historical sights. Among them, a two-meter-wide alley (小巷), or Liuchi Xiang in Chinese, is a very popular one. Lots of people come to visit it every year. There is a touching story about the alley.
In the Qing Dynasty, an officer named Zhang Ying received a letter from his family one day. From the letter, Zhang learned that his neighbor, the Wu family, wanted to build a house. But there was a disagreement (分歧) between the two families. It was about the alley between the houses. Zhang’s family wrote the letter to let the Wu family give up. However, Zhang wrote a letter back, saying,
“Writing a letter, miles away, just for a wall.
Why not give them one meter?
Looking at the ten-thousand-mile-long Great Wall,
Where is its builder Emperor Qinshihuang?”
After reading the letter, Zhang’s family moved their wall one meter back for their neighbour. Because they realized that the neighbours were much more important than the wall. The Wu family was deeply touched and moved their wall one meter back too. So there was a two-meter-wide alley between the two families.
Hundreds of years later, the story of Liuchi Xiang still tells us that kindness and tolerance (宽容) can take away walls between people, and they can create (创造) love as well.

【答案】One Possible Version:
As we all know, good learning habits play an important role in our study. Here are some of mine.
Firstly, I always make a study plan. I can know what to study every day clearly and make full use of my time. In addition, I try to take notes while having a class, which makes me focus on the lessons instead of paying attention to things that aren’t important. What’s more, preparing lessons before class can improve my self-learning ability, and I can understand some key points and the goals of the lessons better. Last but not least, I usually review what I’ve learnt. It’s quite effective.
In a word, without the help of these good habits, I can’t learn better. I hope everyone should have their own good learning habits.
