Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer who helped shape the course of American literature. His life was full of tragedies, but he had the great influence on the 19th-century American literature and continues to influence writers to this day.
The early life of Edgar Allan Poe was quite unhappy. Born in 1809, Poe was not yet three years old when his parents died. Adopted by a wealthy family, he got into trouble at school. He entered the United States Military Academy at West Point, but he dropped out without graduating. His misery (不幸) continued to his adult life. Later, because of a failed marriage, he suffered from mental illness. He was so upset about real life that he turned to writing. Expressing himself in an unreal and imaginary world was his only comfort.
The tragedies in Poe’s life influenced the tone, style and contents of his writing. His stories usually include death, which help build his reputation as a master of “dark” literature. In his The Tell-Tale Heart, the main character goes crazy and kills his roommate while in The Black Cat, the main character kills his cat in a fit of madness.
Poe died at the age of 40 in 1849. His life is short, but his influence is very great. Poe is credited with (被誉为) creating crime fiction, and many say he contributed greatly to the appearance of science fiction. Fascinated (着迷) by the scientific theories and new inventions of his time, he wrote about imaginary societies in the future. Writers such as Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes, regarded Poe as the father of detective fiction. Jules Verne, a French writer who helped popularize science fiction, said Poe’s work had a direct influence on the stories he wrote.

Smoking in your own home in Thailand may now be considered a crime, if the smoke is considered harmful to other people in the house.
The new law, Family Protection and Development Promotion Act, aiming at controlling smoking at home which might be hazardous for others' health living under the same roof, was initiated by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and was announced in the Royal Gazette on May 22, 2019. It came into force on August 20.
According to the center for research and knowledge management for tobacco control, at the Faculty of Medical Science of Mahidol University, there are about 4.9 million households where one or more family members smoke. An average of 10.3 million people have unwittingly(不知不觉地) become passive smokers because they’ve been breathing smoke at home. Scientific studies show that passive smokers are at greater risk of being affected by cancer. Of 75 child patients from houses where smoking is practiced, 76% of them were found to have nicotine traces in their urine(尿液), with 43% of them having nicotine content exceeding(超过) permissible levels.
Smoking at home also “may lead to physical or emotional violence” because of aggressiveness when there is a lack of smoking, and might as well ruin relationships between smokers and non-smoker family members.
According to the new law, anyone who thinks they are affected by domestic smoking can report to government departments concerned so that officials will be sent to investigate and take legal action against the smokers. Once convicted(证明有罪的), the court may order a person to receive treatment to quit smoking in an attempt to protect the person's family.

A good hug gives us a comfortable feeling, leaving us calm and at ease. Like the rest of us, scientists have long suspected the healing capacity (修复能力) of a good hug. Unlike the rest of us, they’ve gone about trying to prove it.
“There’s a lot that we still need to learn, and there’s a lot we don’t know,” says Michael Murphy, a research professor in the department of psychological sciences at Texas Tech University. “What seems to be emerging is that hugs, as well as other forms of affectionate touch, are really powerful ways of reminding people that they’re cared about and that they have someone in their corner.”
“We expect touch. When we’re born, we’re placed in our mother’s arms almost immediately. In that first year of our life, we spend a lot of time being held by other people. And as we grow up, we seek out hugs and touch and cuddling as a way of connection. I think what has been lost in the past years are these really easy opportunities to be reminded of connection.”
While he was at Carnegie Mellon, Murphy was the lead author of a hug-centered 2018 article in the scientific journal PLOS One. In a series of interviews with 404 adults over a two-week period, the researchers found, that “receiving a hug is associated with the attenuation of negative mood that occurs on days with interpersonal conflict”. That is to say, generally, hugs help to reduce the negative impacts that personal conflicts may cause in our daily lives.
Other papers have found similarly that hugs aren’t just reserved for simple social greetings. Hugs and other forms of physical touch can really change a person’s moods. A 2006 brain-wave study in which 16 married women were threatened with an electrical shock showed that simply holding hands with their husbands helped calm the brain’s reactions to the possible threat. Further, holding hands with their husbands in what was considered a higher-quality marriage lessened the brain’s threat response even more.
12. What is the author’s argument in this text?
A. A good hug makes us feel comfortable.
B. Everybody needs to touch every day.
C. A good hug can cure us of our disease.
D. A good touch can heal our hurt organs.
13. Why did the author quote Michael Murphy’s words?
A. To show his point of view.
B. To tell us the importance of hugs.
C. To support his point of view.
D. To introduce his argument.
14. We seek out hugs and touch mainly because .
A. we have been hugged since birth
B. it is a means of being connected
C. all children love being together
D. it is a way to show our love
15. Which should be the best title for this text?
A. The Power of Hugs
B. The Lost Connection
C. Human Nature
D. Husband’s Hand

By the time they reached the lake, Daniel was so angry that he said to his father, “I’m going to find a better place for us to camp” and walked away alone.
With no path to follow, Daniel just walked on for quite a long time. After he had climbed to a high place, he turned around, hoping to see the lake. To his surprise, he saw nothing but forest and a snow capped mountain top. He suddenly realized that he was lost.
“Dad! Mom! Dad! Mom!…” he cried. “Help! Help me!...”
No reply. If only he had not left his mobile phone in that bag with his father. Daniel kept moving, but the farther he walked, the more confused he became. As night was beginning to fall, Daniel was so tired that he had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Daniel said to himself, “Hadn’t I walked away angrily, I wouldn’t be trapped in this awful place, facing with the danger of dying.” He regretted with endless anxiety, and then became asleep with shining tears in his eyes.
Daniel rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. He could hear water trickling (滴落) some where in the distance. Quickly he followed the sound to a stream. To his great joy, he saw some apple trees. He ate some. Never in his life had he tasted anything better.
