Self-control is the ability to regulate and adjust responses in order to avoid undesirable behaviors, increase desirable ones, and achieve long-term goals. Common goals such as losing weight, exercising regularly, eating healthy food, giving up bad habits, and saving money are just a few worthwhile ambitions that people believe require self-control.
One 2011 survey conducted by the American Psychological Association found that 27 percent of subjects identified a lack of willpower as the primary factor keeping them from reaching their goals. Researchers have found that people who have better self-control tend to be healthier and happier. In one experiment, students who exhibited greater self-control had better grades and higher test scores, and were more likely to be admitted to a competitive academic program. The study also found that when it came to academic success, self-control was a more important factor than IQ scores.
The psychologist Walter Mischel conducted famous experiments in 1975 that were related to delayed gratification. In these experiments, children were offered a choice: they could choose to eat one treat right away, usually a cookie or a candy or they could wait for a brief period of time in order to get two treats. At this point, the researcher would leave the child alone in a room with a single treat. Not surprisingly, many of the kids chose to eat the single treat the moment the experimenters left the room. However, some of the kids were able to wait for the second treat.
Based on his research, Mischel proposed what he referred to as a “hot-and-cool” system to explain the ability to delay gratification. The hot system refers to the part of our willpower that is emotional and impulsive (冲动的) and urges us to act upon our desires. The cool system is the part of our willpower that is rational (理性的) and thoughtful, and enables us to consider the consequences of our actions in order to resist our impulses.
Self-control is an important skill that allows us to regulate behavior in order to achieve our long-term goals. Research has shown that self-control is not only important for goal attainment, and people with greater willpower also tend to do better on all sides.
8. What kind of students does the author think will most probably do best in studies?
A. Those having the highest IQ scores.
B. Those respecting the teacher most.
C. Those having the greatest willpower.
D. Those performing most actively in class.
9. What does the underlined word “gratification” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Effect. B. Competition. C. Hardship. D. Enjoyment.
10. What can we learn from the experiments made by Mischel in 1975?
A. Few children could get two treats.
B. Not all the kids were short of patience.
C. Most of the children ate another treat.
D. Self-control is very important for one’s future.
11. Which of the following behaviors belongs to the cool system?
A. Consuming plenty of sweet food.
B. Staying up late at night often.
C. Copying others’ homework.
D. Quitting drinking high-sugar drinks.
D
Whenever you read text, your brain processes the visual stimuli (刺激物) to create meaning and understand the content. Chances are, you don’t pay much attention to the way the information is presented- particularly the font (字体) choice. That’s because your main target is reading comprehension, not aesthetics.
Although typography(排印) is missed by most of us, it’s essential in making texts legible, readable and appealing for audiences. Beyond the visual aspect, research shows that fonts play a significant role in the mental processes of understanding that happen while we read. A font’s impact on the way you learn and memorize information might be hard to notice consciously, but your brain is certainly tuned in. Perhaps surprisingly, hard-to-read fonts such as Bodoni, Comic Sans, or Monotype Corsiva are better for memorizing information than fonts like Arial or Times New Roman, according to some studies.
“Difficulty can function as an alarm signal, giving the reader a sense that the task is challenging and will require mental effort,” says Daniel Oppenheimer, a professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University and one of a 2010 study authors, “Additionally, slowing down the reading speed to deal with the disfluency may increase the probability of spotting errors in a text.”
Font characteristics such as style, size and color play a role in information retention memory or recall as well, says Stephen Banham, a typography lecturer at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. Experiments have proved a U-shape relationship between font size and memory: Large-font items may predict higher recall regardless of style, but very small font sizes can also introduce a desirable difficulty.
A document’s specific method of formatting information also makes an impact. Using font styles like bold or italics to indicate significance can also improve memory. That’s because people are better able to remember information they consider important, says Oppenheimer. Researchers found that bolded text has a higher recall than text in italic or regular styles, regardless of the font size. However, if an entire document is bolded, the emphasis is lost, and readers can no longer spot vital passages.
12. Why do readers often ignore the font choice?
A. They lack aesthetic knowledge. B. They aim to understand the meaning.
C. Their brains are not sensitive to the font. D. Fonts are of little significance in reading.
13. What does Daniel Oppenheimer say about hard-to-read fonts?
A. They can lead to desirable challenges. B. They may distract readers from the text.
C. The meaning of the text may be mistaken. D. They will affect reading performance negatively.
14. What can improve people’s information retention or recall?
A. Using fonts of medium size. B. Choosing bright font colors.
C. Putting the words in italic type D. Making the whole passage bold.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. What Fonts Make Reading Easy B. What Fonts Make Memory Lasting
C. Why Fonts Impact Retention and Recall D. How Fonts Affect Learning and Memory

People these days are posting about their lives on social media. But what if you’re a private and introverted person like me? What if you want to live in the moment instead of sharing every bit of your life? To be honest, it’s nobody’s business but your own. ___16___
Escape stalkers (跟踪者).
I’ve been a public person as a jazz vocalist for years. It exposed me to stalkers who felt they knew me, just because I was present everywhere. Needless to say, it brought me much anxiety and stress. At some point I asked myself — is being visible more important than my peace of mind? ___17___ The answer is a clear NO. I just want to spend life doing what I love with the people I love.
Protect privacy.
___18___ I need alone time to process what I’m struggling with and honest real talks with the people I trust. I might share a lesson learned from an experience, but now I won’t. I know that by keeping my life private on social media I may miss out on some connections, but I honor and respect the people in my life who value their privacy, so I am being mindful and protect that.
___19___
Another reason I keep my life private is that I prefer to be in the present moment and appreciate it fully. To be on your phone constantly, or to film everything you do, can be quite disrespectful to the people you spend your time with. You lose out on those spontaneous (自发的) moments and a deeper connection. I choose what I share and when I share it, and the rest is for experiencing life without expectations.
Live your life fully, regardless of whether the world knows it or not! ___20___ I just want you to know it’s OK if you don’t.
A. Experience a private life.
B. Live in the moment.
C. Don’t I really care about privacy?
D. Are my followers more important than my friends and family?
E. If you feel like sharing your life openly without hesitation, go for it.

G. It can be quite challenging to go through tough moments with everyone watching.

For years, my wife Teresa taught physical education at the elementary school level. Travelling on a regular schedule to the six schools in her district, she had a chance to get to know most of the kids in the area and see them at their best and their worst.
One day, in her class, Teresa noticed a third-grade girl, Meagan, who was short and grossly overweight, with a closed and hopeless look on her face. Meagan always sat alone in class, played alone at break, and ate alone from a recycled paper sack at lunch. The teachers and staff were kind to Meagan, but the students were not.
The stories made your shoulders drop. Teresa heard that when the playground supervisors (管理员) turned their backs, kids would run up to Meagan, calling her “Meagan the Fat Pig.” They did far worse than isolate (孤立) her; they filled her school days and walks home with physical and emotional torment (折磨). Also, Meagan’s single mother, a hard-working woman, was trying her best to make ends meet but she had never made it before.
Meagan’s situation disturbed my wife deeply. After talking with the principle and other teachers, Teresa came up with an idea. She knew from talking to Meagan that the child had never had a pet. Teresa was sure a pet would be the perfect way to inject some high-powered love and acceptance into Meagan’s life.
So one Saturday afternoon, Meagan was invited to Teresa’s office. When the door buzzer sounded, a dog engaged in a predictable and vigorous welcome. Getting down on one knee, Teresa introduced herself to Meagan. She told Meagan her thought that she could take away a puppy if she liked. Like any creature that has been cared about, Meagan gleamed in her eyes and playfully lifted the puppy almost off the ground. That day Meagan left the office with the puppy.

C 9. D 10. B 11. D
根据原文第二段“In one experiment, students who exhibited greater self-control had better grades and higher test scores, and were more likely to be admitted to a competitive academic program. The study also found that when it came to academic success, self-control was a more important factor than IQ scores.(在一项实验中,表现出更强自我控制能力的学生成绩更好,考试分数更高,更有可能被一个有竞争力的学术项目录取。这项研究还发现,当谈到学业成功时,自我控制比智商更重要。)”可知,作者认为自我控制能力(即:意志力)最强的学生在学习上会表现得最好。故选C项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据原文第三段“In these experiments, children were offered a choice: they could choose to eat one treat right away, usually a cookie or a candy or they could wait for a brief period of time in order to get two treats.(在这些实验中,孩子们可以选择马上吃一种零食,通常是一块饼干或一颗糖,或者他们可以等待一小段时间以获得两种零食。)”
根据原文第三段“Not surprisingly, many of the kids chose to eat the single treat the moment the experimenters left the room. However, some of the kids were able to wait for the second treat.(毫不奇怪,许多孩子在实验者离开房间的那一刻选择吃单一零食。然而,一些孩子能够等待第二种零食。)”可知,并不是所有的孩子都缺乏耐心。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据原文第四段“The hot system refers to the part of our willpower that is emotional and impulsive (冲动的) and urges us to act upon our desires. The cool system is the part of our willpower that is rational (理性的) and thoughtful, and enables us to consider the consequences of our actions in order to resist our impulses.(热系统指的是我们意志力中情绪化和冲动的部分,促使我们按照自己的欲望行事。冷系统是我们意志力中理性和深思熟虑的部分,使我们能够考虑我们行为的后果,以抵制我们的冲动。)”可知,冷系统是意志力中理性和深思熟虑的部分,能让我们考虑行为的后果,抵制冲动。D 项“停止饮用高糖饮料”属于抵制冲动的行为,符合冷系统的特点。故选 D项。
B 13. A 14. C 15. D

根据第一段中“That’s because your main target is reading comprehension, not aesthetics.( 这是因为你的主要目标是阅读理解,而不是审美。)”
根据第三段中““Difficulty can function as an alarm signal, giving the reader a sense that the task is challenging and will require mental effort,”(“难度可以作为一个警报信号,让读者意识到这项任务是具有挑战性的,需要付出精神努力。”)”以及本段中“Additionally, slowing down the reading speed to deal with the disfluency may increase the probability of spotting errors in a text.(此外,放慢阅读速度来处理不流畅可能会增加在文本中发现错误的可能性。)” A选项“They can lead to desirable challenges.( 它们可以带来有利的挑战。)”。故选A。
根据最后一段中“Using font styles like bold or italics to indicate significance can also improve memory. That’s because people are better able to remember information they consider important, says Oppenheimer.(使用粗体或斜体等字体样式来表示重要性也可以提高记忆力。奥本海默说,这是因为人们能够更好地记住他们认为重要的信息。)”可知,通过使用粗体或斜体等字体样式来表示重要性可以提高读者对信息的保持和回忆。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中“ Beyond the visual aspect, research shows that fonts play a significant role in the mental processes of understanding that happen while we read. A font’s impact on the way you learn and memorize information might be hard to notice consciously, but your brain is certainly tuned in.(除了视觉方面,研究表明,字体在我们阅读时的心理理解过程中起着重要作用。
F. Here are my reasons for not sharing my personal life on social media.
G. It can be quite challenging to go through tough moments with everyone watching.
F 17. D 18. G 19. B 20. E
根据上文“What if you want to live in the moment instead of sharing every bit of your life? To be honest, it’s nobody’s business but your own.(如果你想活在当下而不是分享你生活的点点滴滴呢?老实说,这不关别人的事,只是你自己的事)”和下文“Escape stalkers (跟踪者).(躲避跟踪者)”和“Protect privacy.(保护隐私)”及下文内容可知,下文主要讲述了不想在网上分享生活的点点滴滴的原因,所以空处应该在上文提出的问题的基础上引出下文内容,故选项F. Here are my reasons for not sharing my personal life on social media.(以下是我不愿在社交媒体上分享个人生活的原因)承上启下,符合语意。故选F。
根据上文“At some point I asked myself — is being visible more important than my peace of mind?(有时我问自己——被人看见比内心的平静更重要吗?)” D. Are my followers more important than my friends and family?(我的粉丝比我的朋友和家人更重要吗?)为一般疑问句,“more important...than...”的句式与上句一致,衔接合理,句意与下文的“I just want to spend life doing what I love with the people I love.(我只想和我爱的人一起做我爱的事)”相呼应,朋友和家人就是作者所爱的人,作者认为他们比粉丝更加重要。
(保护隐私)”和下文“I need alone time to process what I’m struggling with and honest real talks with the people I trust.(我需要独处的时间来处理我正在挣扎的事情,和我信任的人真诚地交谈)”可知,空处应该是在解释作者要保护隐私的原因;选项G. It can be quite challenging to go through tough moments with everyone watching.(在所有人的注视下度过艰难时刻是相当具有挑战性的)指出了公开隐私给他带来了很大的困难,下文继续解释说明了想要保护隐私的原因,衔接合理,符合语境。
B. Live in the moment.(活在当下)符合该段主题。故选B。
根据上文“Live your life fully, regardless of whether the world knows it or not!(充实地过你的生活,不管世人知不知道!)” E. If you feel like sharing your life openly without hesitation, go for it.(如果你想毫不犹豫地公开分享你的生活,那就去做吧)表达了这层含义,与上下文语意衔接。故选E。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 2: Ten years later, Teresa received an invitation to the high school graduation ceremony from Meagan, where Meagan made a speech.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Now she had a living, breathing friend who wanted to play with her. The cute puppy loved to cuddle up next to her on the sofa and sleep next her on the bed. When Meagan came home from school, the puppy would rush to the door, and follow her from room to room through the house. They became close ones, being together whenever and wherever possible. Energized by the puppy`s unconditional love, limitless affection and loyalty, Meagan began to blossom. She did find fellow pet lovers who befriended her, and things began to improve for her physically, emotionally, and socially.
Ten years later, Teresa received an invitation to the high school graduation ceremony from Meagan, where Meagan made a speech. When Meagan strode to the platform, head high and beaming, Teresa hardly recognized her. She gave a speech on the importance of acceptance and friendship. She talked about the puppy and the great teacher she’d met in the third grade who had helped her climb the steep and treacherous slope of her childhood. It was the puppy who had comforted her when there wasn’t enough to eat in the house and who had stayed by her while she sobbed her heart out. At the conclusion of the speech, Meagan lifted her hands high, displaying a photograph of the puppy, saying, “Thank you, puppy, my close friend. Thank you, Teresa, my great teacher!” As she described, the crowd rose to their feet with cheers, laughter, and long, thunderous applause.
