During his time at a private university, he did many jobs to support himself, like working at construction sites (建筑工地) and handing out notices. But he wasn’t interested in what he was learning in the university. Liu had a big dream—to become a lawyer. He believed “knowledge changes life”. After graduating in 2015, he got a job as a guard at Peking University, making 3,000 yuan a month. Though he didn’t feel confident sometimes—security guards couldn’t enter the library and had to pay service fees in the canteen—he kept going. He audited law courses and learned from thrown-away textbooks. In 2016, he started preparing for the national legal exam (法律考试) while studying for a part-time master’s degree. Later, he moved to the law school front desk, where students gave him notebooks and discussed law with him. Professors, like Zhang Shuanggen, gave him textbooks and invited him to courses. Professor Zhang wrote in a book: “May you become a confident and brave lawyer.” Liu failed the exam five times but never gave up. He finally passed in 2022. However, this will be the first year that I spend the Mid-Autumn Festival away from them. To help reduce some of the homesickness, my friends and I are planning to attend a full-moon-themed party in New York City’s Chinatown. Even though the party is a few days after the Mid-Autumn Festival, I’m sure it will still be fun. A scientist named George Washington Carver answered that question, over and over again. When Carver was born in 1864, he was a slave (奴隶) on a farm in Missouri. Later, he got freedom. As a teenager, he worked on a farm and managed to finish high school. At the age of 30, he became the first black student at the college in Iowa. Together, we carried her to the school nurse. Luckily, after a short rest, she was fine again. But when I got back to the classroom, something unexpected happened. Some of my classmates asked me about the girl. Others said I was really brave. One person even asked if I wanted to walk home with them after school. For most people, a birthday usually comes with a party, as well as a cake, presents and wishes from friends. But besides these, what does a birthday mean? One year, I spent my birthday by myself in a completely new place. Calls and messages poured in as usual. However, I was not sure about what to do. I had nowhere to go; I didn’t know anyone to share the joy of the event with, either. At that moment, my mother called me, asking, “What are you going to do today?” “I’m not sure, Mum. There’s no one here. I’m so far from home…” Although my voice sounded so weak, I could still hear its tremble (颤动) clearly in the empty, quiet room. “You don’t always need a lot of people for your birthday. Just follow your heart and make this day yours.” What Mum said reduced my unhappiness. Then I picked up a book and read it with music on. I did as my mother had told me and enjoyed “my own day”. But unexpectedly, I got connected with my inner self. It was a peaceful but pleasant day. In 1983, Wang Zhong saw the barren (光秃秃) hills to the north of Ciyu Village and started thinking about planting trees on them. The serious soil erosion on the mountains had greatly influenced the lives of the villagers. He left his job as a teacher, rented the land from the local government and took on the task of greening the barren hills. He led his family up the mountains and began the arduous journey of planting trees. At that time, he and his wife left their two teenage sons in a cave while the couple dug holes for the trees. I decided to write a story about my experience in the newspaper. After reading my story, officer (官员) Alex promised to make things better in the city. I hated these grammar rules and hardly understood them myself, even though I was a writer. As I looked at the textbook, I knew that even if I told this student all the different rules about commas, he wouldn’t remember them. I was also in no mood for a long lesson. My mom had died just a few short weeks ago. I missed her so much, feeling half-dead inside. All I wanted to do was stay in bed, but my young family was struggling to get by and I knew I had to take every day of work I could. I looked at the textbook again but couldn’t read it because my eyes were so watery. Suddenly, however, I got an idea. “A period is the end of a sentence or a thought,” I said. “A comma, on the other hand, is just a brief pause (暂停) before the sentence continues on.” When I finished saying this, my heart suddenly felt lighter. I smiled and thought of my mom continuing on in a place much brighter and happier than the one I was in now. That little moment of light helped me as I continued to miss my mom over the months and years to come. Recently I remembered it once again when I saw this quote in a book I was reading: “Death is not a period, only a comma.” Our lives are a story that goes on forever. Our time here is only a part of it. 1.The writer starts the passage by ________. A.to live an easy and rich life B.to be able to overcome difficulties C.to have a positive life attitude D.to face challenges in a relaxing way 4.What does the writer mean by “Death is not a period, only a comma.”? A.Death is the end. B.Life goes on after death. C.Quoting is not important. D.We all need breaks. 【答案】1.A 2.C 3.B 4.B 【导语】本文主要讲述了作者作为一名年轻的中学英语老师,在面对学生询问逗号和句号的区别时的解答。 1.细$ 专题02 阅读理解(说明文) 主题01 人与社会——人物传记 Passage 1 (25-26九年级上·辽宁沈阳于洪区·期中) In the state of Qin, there was a man called Shang Yang. When Carver was born in 1864, he was a slave (奴隶) on a farm in Missouri. Later, he got freedom. As a teenager, he worked on a farm and managed to finish high school. At the age of 30, he became the first black student at the college in Iowa. In 1896, he became the first black teacher working at another college in Iowa. Several years later, he took a job at a college in Alabama, where he worked until his death in 1943. Carver studied agriculture, the science of farming. His research made huge improvements in farming in the southern United States. Carver studied peanuts. He knew that the south couldn’t grow just cotton. Planting cotton year after year made the soil useless. Carver learned that if farmers planted cotton one year and peanuts the next, the soil would keep healthy. To encourage this practice, Carver thought of new uses for the peanut. Would you like to try peanut and raisin ice cream? How about using peanuts as a kind of material to make shampoo? Perhaps you would prefer to bake with peanut flour. Glue? Paper? The list goes on and on. Carver helped farmers and fellow scientists freely with his ideas. Carver’s life could be used as our example. 1.Which U.S. state was George Washington Carver born in 1864 as a slave? A.In Alabama. B.In Iowa. C.In Missouri. D.In Georgia. 2.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a use for peanuts that Carver developed? A.Ice cream. B.Shampoo. C.Glue. He spent most of his time in his room alone. His life changed after he found a little dog. “The dog was my best friend. It made me whom I am today.” he said. After finishing college in 2003, he started to learn how to care for animals. To make his dog-training skills better, he visited people who were good at animal care in many places in the world. He learned the meanings of different sounds dogs make and became known. Over the past eight years, Wu’s team has used therapy dogs to help more than 100,000 people. And they also have put forward animal-assisted therapy programs in cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Chengdu and Shenzhen. The program includes 18 classes and its purpose is to make children’s conversation ability and social skills better. “While AAT has been used in Western countries for more than 100 years, few Chinese have heard about it. Passage 3 (25-26九年级上·辽宁沈阳浑南区·期中) “One generation plants trees so that the next can enjoy the shade.” Wang Zhong, a 78-year-old farmer from Ciyu Village in Shandong Province, has spent the past 42 years of his life greening mountains and protecting forests with his family. There were no roads, so Wang had to carry tree seedlings and water on his shoulders and walk kilometers to the mountains. The water he carried each time could only water seven or eight trees, so he had to make many trips every day. As Wang grew older, he passed on the task of forest protection to his son. Influenced by his father, Wang Tao took over the job and worked hard every day to carry on the family’s work. Over 42 years, the Wang family has planted over 200,000 trees, covering more than 133 hectares. Their efforts have turned the barren mountains into green forests, leaving a “green treasure” for future generations and showing that the idea of green development is increasingly taking root in people’s hearts. 1.How does the writer start the text? A.By telling a story. B.By using a saying. C.By sharing an experience. D.By asking a question. 2.Why did Wang Zhong leave his job as a teacher? A.Because he suffered from a serious disease. B.Because he would like to make more money. C.Because he was asked to teach in another school. D.Because he wanted to green mountains in his village. 3.From Paragraph 4, we know Wang’s journey of planting trees was ______. A.Educational. B.Dangerous. C.Difficult. D.Interesting. 4.What is the writer’s purpose of writing this text? A.To tell us how many trees Wang Zhong and his family planted. B.To encourage more people to help villagers in Ciyu protecting forest. C.To introduce Wang Zhong’s family and their tree-planting story. D.To tell us why Wang Tao helped his father with tree-planting work. Passage 1 (24-25九年级上·辽宁丹东凤城市·期中) The silence of the pond (池塘) was broken by the first cry: “Found something!” A swimmer ducked (扎入) into the water with a lifeline connected to a boat. Soon, she appeared, holding a bright blue glass bottle. It was passed to another, then into the boat. On a fine Sunday morning in May, a team of 10 women over 65 years old, known as the Old Women Against Underwater Rubbish (OWAUR), looked for rubbish across Nova Pond in Scotia. When the team returned, they joked about the trip. “We didn’t even know what it was,” one swimmer said with a laugh, showing an electronic lighter they had found. “We had to ask a young person.” Part protection organization, part social club, OWAUR only accepted old women as its members. To improve the conditions of the ponds, the group made it its mission to take rubbish away from them. The idea of this group was from a moment of Sandy, a retired (退休的) reporter. As a lifelong nature lover, she liked swimming in ponds. However, the world of the pond, which was a little polluted, made her anxious. Then she came up with a slogan (标语): “OVER 65, IF YOU’RE HEALTHY ENOUGH, IS THE AGE OF ACTION.” Soon many people joined her. They found a sense of wonder at the pond cleanup moments. And their team could do a lot more than people might think. When many. people thanked OWAUR for what they had done, some questioned why they called themselves “old women”. “You should call yourselves the Mermaids (美人鱼) Against Underwater Rubbish,” they said. 1.What does “another” in paragraph 1 refer to? It was a terrible visit. As someone in a wheelchair (轮椅), it was almost impossible for me to get around the city. I decided to write a story about my experience in the newspaper. After reading my story, officer (官员) Alex promised to make things better in the city. Last week, I returned to see if the city had improved. I arrived at the train station early in the morning. One year ago, the station only had stairs (楼梯) up to the exit (出口). That meant that three men had to carry me out. This year, I saw that there was a new lift (电梯). And then I noticed the buttons (按钮) and they were much lower than those in “normal” lifts, so I was able to push them myself. Then I decided to take a taxi to the city center. First, I needed to get some money from the bank. Again, I was very happy to find three ATMs outside the train station. One of them was lower than the other two, so it was the right height for wheelchair users. Later that day, I took a bus and visited some main museums and shopping centers. There were ways for wheelchair users everywhere I went. Things are still not perfect and there is a long way to go, but I can say that Alex has kept his promise to disabled people in the city! 1.How has the train station improved since Lisa’s visit a year ago? A.There has been a new lift. B.The city has made the train station more beautiful. C.People have repaired the old lifts in the train station in the city. D.Workers came to help her get out of the train station more quickly. 2.Which of the following is the right order? ①. Alex knew about Lisa’s experience.         ②. Lisa saw the buttons on the new lift. ③. City News asked Lisa to come to the city.     ④. Lisa went to some museums and shopping malls. ⑤. Three ATMs outside the train station made Lisa happy. D.Surprised → excited → bored. 4.What probably happened at the end of the story? A.Alex gave up his job. B.Lisa didn’t visit the city again. C.Alex gave much money to Lisa to help her. D.Lisa wrote about her good experience in the newspaper. Passage 3 (24-25九年级上·辽宁丹东凤城市·期中) Vicky’s mother opened the door. She had a look at Vicky’s bedroom. “What a mess! It looks as if a hurricane (飓风) passed through Vicky’s bedroom,” said Vicky’s mother. “I must ask her to clean it.” Vicky was eating breakfast. Her father came into the kitchen and said, “Mom wants you to clean your room. It looks as if a hurricane passed through it.” Joe, Vicky’s little brother, asked, “A hurricane? Is that a bad thing?” “Sure it is,” said his father. “I’ll do it after school, Dad,” said Vicky. “My first class is geography and Mr. Miller hates people to be late.” And off she ran through the front door. Twenty minutes later, Vicky ran into her classroom. “Today,” said Mr. Miller, “we’ re going to learn about hurricanes. Have any of you seen a hurricane?” Vicky thought about her bedroom, but she said nothing. “I haven’t seen one. Not a real one but I watched a program on TV and I know they destroy (破坏) things and leave a mess,” said James who sat next to Vicky. “Yes,” said Mr. Miller. “But today I’m going to surprise you. Sometimes hurricanes do good.” “Hurricanes can be good things?” Vicky asked. “Oh, yes,” said Mr. Miller. “Hurricanes bring a lot of water to rivers and lakes that are becoming dry. Animals and fish come back to live in them. Hurricanes also pick up heat from the very hot areas of the world and drop it in less warm places.” “So, hurricanes can be good things,” Vicky said to herself. “I’m going to show Mom the good part.” When Vicky got home in the afternoon, she began to clean up her bedroom. She put all of her things in their proper places. “Mom,” she called. “Can you come here for a minute?” Vicky’s mother put her head around the door. “Vicky!” she said. “That looks fantastic! Passage 4 (24-25九年级上·辽宁营口·期中) “Mr. Smith, what is the difference between a period (句号) and a comma (逗号)?” I was a young teacher in a middle school English class. A.raising a question B.expressing feelings C.explaining reasons D.giving an example 2.Why did the writer not want to teach a long lesson that day? A.Because he didn’t like working for that teacher. B.Because he hadn’t read the textbook yet. C.Because he was sad about his mom’s death. D.Because he couldn’t wait to see his young family. 3.What does the underlined phrase “get by” mean? A.to live an easy and rich life B.to be able to overcome difficulties C.to have a positive life attitude D.to face challenges in a relaxing way 4.What does the writer mean by “Death is not a period, only a comma.”? A.Death is the end. B.Life goes on after death. C.Quoting is not important. D.We all need breaks. Passage 5 (25-26九年级上·辽宁葫芦岛兴城市·期中) The use of “yes” and “no” in Chinese is different from that in English. So after coming to America, the use of the two words brings me a lot of problems. For example, if I am asked, “Haven’t you had lunch yet?” and I have not had lunch yet, then in Chinese I usually say “Yes, I haven’t.” But in English, I have to say, “No, I haven’t.” Because of this, my friends often get the opposite meaning from what I want to give them. One weekend night, my roommate Omer brought his children into the room. They made some noise while playing. I did not mind the noise since I was just watching TV. The next morning, I met Omer. He asked me with a smile, “Didn’t my children make noise last night? Didn’t it make you uncomfortable?” Because I did not care about the noise at all, I clearly said “Yes!” The smile suddenly disappeared from Omer’s face, and he said, “I am sorry about that. They are going right now. See you later.” I could not understand, and I just said, “OK. Bye!” After a moment of thinking, I realized how stupid I was. That evening, I explained to Omer and said sorry to him. I knew he thought that I had been very rude (粗鲁的). Now to solve this problem, I have set simple rules: First, take a five-second break if I am not sure of “yes” or “no”. Second, use “Pardon me”, so the person may explain to me in a direct way. 1.What was the main problem that the author had in America? A.He missed his family and friends. B.He couldn’t find his way around. C.He said “No” to all American food. D.He had trouble using “yes” and “no”. 2.According to Paragraph 2, Omer thought the author was ________ to say “yes”. A.stupid B.happy C.impolite D.outgoing 3.Why did Omer say sorry to the author? A.Because he misunderstood the author’s words. B.Because he messed up the room. C.Because he took the author’s book by mistake. D.Because he forgot to close the TV. 4.What can we learn from the passage? A.Practice makes perfect. B.Actions speak louder than words.
