The best thing about coming-of-age movies is that you can watch them and get a better understanding
of yourself today. These are the best coming-of-age movies we can think of.
The names of the movies Introductions
Lady Bird Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson is a high school senior from the “wrong side of the tracks(社会底层)”. She longs for adventure, maturity and opportunity, but finds none of them in her Catholic
high school in Sacramento. This movie follows the title character's senior year in high school including her first romance, her participation in the school play, and most importantly, her applying to college.
Boyhood This is one of the few movies where you actually get
to see the star grow up before your eyes. Richard
Linklater filmed with actor Ellar Coltrane over a pe-
riod of 12 years, a little at a time, and you can watch
him go from a little kid to a young adult on the
screen.
Little Women There's no more popular coming-of-age story than
Little Women, which tracks the lives of the four
March sisters. With their father fighting in the Amer-
ican Civil War, sisters Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy are at
home with their mother, a very outspoken woman
for her time. The story tells how the sisters grow up,
find love and find their places in the world.

根据Lady Bird中的第二句“She longs for adventure...high school in Sacramento.”

If your yard is tiny, Jordan Karambelas has a suggestion for growing food organically: a good-looking
aquaponics(鱼菜共生) system that uses recycled water enriched by fish waste to water vegetables planted
above.
Jordan Karambelas, a junior at Mira Costa High School, started the Permaculture(永续农业) Club at
the school this year to make her fellow students more aware of this suitable way to grow food, which is envi-
ronmentally friendly.
Her work was inspired by Mike Garcia, who has spent many years working on water conservation and
recycling methods. With Garcia's help, they completed the project in just a weekend, building a handsome
two-tiered(双层的), 4-by-8-foot redwood structure that would easily fit in a tiny yard. “Many of the mate-
rials were donated,” Karambelas said, “but it would have cost her about $1,500 to build the structure at
full price”. The materials included 26 redwood boards, a PVC pipe, 40 small goldfish and a pump(泵).
The lower box is filled with water and little fish. Garcia helped set up the pump so that the water could
be delivered to the planting boxes above. The runoff goes back into the fish tank, keeping the water full of
air. If the water level gets too low in the fish tank, the pump automatically draws water from the city water.
So far the students' response has been positive, Karambelas said, and she is hoping it creates enough in-
terest to increase the membership in her new club next year.
Karambelas has big plans to rebuild the broken greenhouse and abandoned raised beds in the courtyard
and replant them all using recycled water. This summer will be the test to see how much water her aquapon-
ics system requires, but she plans to visit frequently and hopefully expects good organic products.
24.Why did Karambelas start the club?
A.To make good use of her yard.
B.To show a newly-made system.
C.To provide food growing places.
D.To promote an eco-friendly idea.
25.What is the feature of Karambelas's system?
A.Space-saving. B.Time-wasting. C.Outdated. D.Profitable.
26.What can the pump do in the system?
A.Send waste into the city water.
B.Draw air from the planting boxes.
C.Push water to the planting boxes.
D.Get fresh water out of the city water.
27.Which words can best describe Karambelas?
A.Modest and brave.
B.Loyal and funny.
C.Curious and honest.
D.Ambitious and positive.
根据第三段第二句“With Garcia's help, they completed the project in just a week-
end, building a handsome two-tiered, 4-by-8-foot redwood structure that would easily fit in a tiny yard.”
故选A。
根据第四段第二句“Garcia helped set up the pump so that the water could be deliv-
ered to the planting boxes above.”
C
Are you a logical thinker, or would you say that you're more free-spirited and artistic? If you're the
former, somebody's probably told you at some point that you're a left-brained person, and if you're the latter,
right-brained. The idea that the right half of the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical
half and that our individual characteristics are determined by which half is dominant(主导的) is widespread
in popular psychology.
The idea that there are right-brained and left-brained people is a myth. Although we all obviously have
different personalities and talents, there's no reason to believe these differences can be explained by the dom-
inance of one half of the brain over the other half. Recent research using brain imaging technology hasn't
found any evidence of right or left dominance. Math, for example, requires logical thought and, thus, is gen-
erally said to be connected with the left brain. But mathematics involves a profoundly creative effort in addi-
tion to being a logical one. So would a gifted mathematician be a right-brained person or a left-brained per-
son?
If there's no evidence for the myth of right-brained and left-brained people, why do so many people be-
lieve it? Perhaps it just makes intuitive(直觉的) sense that people's brains would be dominant on one side or
the other just as their hands, feet, or eyes are. It may also have something to do with our seemingly unlimited
appetite that allows us to sort ourselves into “types” based on our emotional and intellectual characteris-
tics. When people are offered some descriptive statements that are presented as individualized descriptions
of their own personalities, they tend to accept them as meaningful and true, especially if the statements are
positive. The “insights” that are generated are often ______. After all, who would reject a description of
themselves as “artistic and creative” or “rational and analytical”?
flattering
The myth is popular, in the end, because it gives us a “scientific” way to talk about our favorite sub-
ject—ourselves.
28.What does the first paragraph say about brain dominance?
A.It's a common belief.
B.It's an uncertain analysis.
C.It's a recent discovery.
D.It's a contradictory theory.
29.Why does the author mention math in paragraph 2?
A.To advocate further study. B.To prove his point on the issue.
C.To emphasize its complexity. D.To show his gift as a mathematician.
30.What does the underlined word “flattering” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Pleasing. B.Accurate.
C.Ridiculous. D.Puzzling.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Science Behind Personality Types
B.The Role of Creativity in Mathematics
C.The Influence of Brain Dominance on Behavior
D.The Myth of Left-Brained and Right-Brained People
根据第一段最后一句“The idea that...and that our individual characteristics are de-
termined by which half is dominant is widespread in popular psychology.”
故选A。
though...there's no reason to believe these differences can be explained by the dominance of one half of the
brain over the other half.”和“Recent research...hasn't found any evidence of right or left dominance.(最近
根据画线词上文“When people are offered...statements are positive.”
After all, who would reject a description of themselves as ‘artistic and
creative' or ‘rational and analytical'?”
A. 故选A。

Plastic has become an essential part of modern life, with around 1 million plastic water bottles sold ev-
ery minute and 5 trillion plastic bags used worldwide every year, according to the UN Environment Pro-
gramme. Half of all plastic production is designed for single-use purposes, and the annual output of over 400
million tons is projected to reach 1,100 million tons by 2050. This growing mountain of waste has intensi-
fied public and regulatory demands for improved recycling.
Recycling plastic, however, is complex. Many items are dirty or made from multiple layers, making
traditional methods ineffective. Consequently, over 90% of plastic waste is buried, or deserted in nature. In
response, forward-thinking companies are investing in advanced recycling technologies to turn waste into
raw materials for new plastic. Yet, this approach has caused debates.
One common method, pyrolysis, involves heating plastic waste to produce oil and synthetic gas, which
power recycling plants. However, the process releases harmful substances, raising concerns about its envi-
ronmental impact. Critics argue that, rather than achieving a reduction in carbon emissions(排放), this
method might result in similar or even higher levels of emissions compared to the production of new plastic.
Some even accuse the industry of using advanced recycling as a way to justify continued plastic production.
The US Environmental Protection Agency has rejected this approach, and European environmental groups
share similar concerns.
Despite these challenges, advanced recycling has potential. For instance, Mura Technology in the UK
claims its hydrothermal process produces more output with lower carbon emissions, while Australia's Sam-
sara Eco is developing enzyme-based methods that remove the need for new oil. These advancements could
make recycling more efficient and environmentally friendly, helping to keep plastic in use rather than in
landfills(垃圾填埋场).
While the debate on advanced recycling continues, progress is underway. Britain recently approved a
version of the mass-balance approach, and many EU member states are leaning towards acceptance. With
further innovation and investment, advanced recycling could help address the global plastic waste crisis.
32.What do the figures in paragraph 1 indicate?
A.The difficulty of recycling.
B.The prospect of plastic goods.
C.The severity of plastic waste.
D.The popularity of plastic items.
33.Why does advanced recycling meet with criticism?
A.It risks higher carbon emissions. B.It produces more plastic waste.
C.It does harm to recycling plants. D.It legalizes plastic production.
34.What can be inferred about the innovations in advanced recycling?
A.They offer an alternative to plastic.
B.They have won popularity in the West.
C.They hold promise for green recycling.
D.They guarantee a solution to plastic waste.
35.What is the author's attitude towards advanced recycling?
A.Critical. B.Objective. C.Doubtful. D.Passionate.
This growing mountain
of waste”总结。
substances(该过程释放有害物质)”和“Critics argue that...this method might result in similar or even
higher levels of emissions compared to the production of new plastic.(批评者认为……
故选A。
排放更低”,而澳大利亚Samsara Eco的酶解法 “无需新石油”,并以“These advancements could make
recycling more efficient and environmentally friendly(这些技术进步能让回收更高效、更环保)”总结。
We all have a dream and amazing potential(潜力) to achieve it. So how can we do this? Below are four
simple steps that you can take to realize your dream.
Realizing your dream begins with making a choice. This is like planting a seed(种子).Without it, noth-
ing can grow. While society frequently tells us what success should look like, real happiness comes from lis-
tening to your inner voice. 36 For example, ask yourself “What activities really win my heart?” or
“What problems do I feel passionate about solving?” Such honest explorations help you make a right de-
cision.
Knowledge alone isn't enough—action brings dreams to life. Like a traveler learning the route by walk-
ing it, you'll discover more about your goals as you move forward. 37 If you dream of writing a book,
write one page today. Action reduces fear and builds confidence. Life lessons come through doing, not just
thinking.
38 Doubts will arise during the journey and even after reaching your goals: You might question
whether you‘re on the right path or if your achievements truly matter. During such moments, reconnect with
your original purpose. Faith isn’t about having no fears. 39 Whether starting or succeeding, believing in
your choice makes the difference between a life lived fully and one filled with regrets.
Challenges are unavoidable, but persistence(坚持) turns effort into good results. Great things—learning
a skill, building a business, or creating art—all demand time. When progress feels slow, remind yourself
that every step counts. History shows that people who refuse to quit eventually succeed. 40
A.Start with small steps.
B.Action reveals true possibilities.
C.Those who succeed choose actively.
D.It's about continuing in spite of them.
E.Some simple self-questioning can help.
F.To achieve your dreams, you must keep the faith.

Traditional Chinese music usually uses five notes—gong, shang, jue, zhi, yu—which sound calm and
open. These notes are 56 (remarkable) consistent with the old idea of five elements: earth, metal, wood,
fire and water. The melodies feel spacious and gentle, like a walk through a quiet garden. The main instru-

“High Mountain and Flowing Water” talks about true friendship. Instead of printed scores, many players
read the tablature full of pictures like “He Chong Xiao”, imagining a scene of cranes 63 (fly) down-
ward in a slow glissando.
Today, young 64 (music) still learn these old tunes, which are sometimes mixed with pop, jazz or
rock. You can hear guzheng chords in a love song or erhu solos in a movie soundtrack. In this way, tradi-
tional Chinese music stays alive and attractive. 65 played beside a West Lake pavilion or in a Beijing
concert hall, the ancient sounds continue to evolve, proving that tradition is not a relic but a living conversa-
tion between past and present.

此处为“主语+be+adj.+to do”句型。故填to recognize。
空前“The erhu has only two strings”和空后“it can cry, laugh or sing like a human
故填but或yet。
with。

故填are described。
A famous

A Journey Through Pages
One of the most inspiring books I have ever read is Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom.
This touching story is about the author's real-life meetings with his old college professor, Morrie
Schwartz, who shares important lessons about life as he faces his final days. What makes this book so spe-
cial is the simple but powerful wisdom it offers, like “Love always wins”. This book shows me what real-
ly matters in life and helps me to think in a more positive way.
It's a guide to living a better life and a must-read for anyone looking for hope and meaning.

The frightening day of our diving test was here. My parents thought we were lucky to have an Olympic
-size swimming pool at the school. My mom stressed that the swimming pool was one of the best in our city.
But I didn't feel happy about it at all. Instead, I felt afraid of the swimming pool. It was mainly because I
was terribly shy.
I was so shy that I always sat at the back of the room in class so I'd not be called upon to read. As for
the present physical education class each Monday morning, I would work my way to the back of the line
forming at the diving board so I would not have to practice the dives.
Now, it was another Monday morning—the morning of our diving test. My blood ran cold when the
teacher Ms. Robbins announced that we would be graded for our final on the most difficult dive—the jack-

knife. And she added, “This diving test is important. The one who fails has to spare time in the following
Monday mornings to practice diving in this swimming pool and attend this test again.”
My body kept shaking with fear as the line to the scary diving board shortened. As I watched, each stu-
dent seemed to perform the challenging dive effortlessly. And shortly I would have to attempt something
that I had never even practiced before.
Then I remembered someone telling me that when you picture yourself doing a skill over and over, it's
just as effective as physically practicing that skill. So I watched carefully as each classmate jumped at the
end of the board once, added a jump for height, folded their body in half to reach their toes, and finally
straightened out like an arrow for going into the water. After carefully watching for a while, I was actually in
a state of surprise, because all of a sudden I realized that it was possible for me to perform these four steps
of diving.

Eventually all classmates except me finished jumping. The teacher announced that it was my turn.
With my heart knocking wildly, I walked down the diving board towards its end.
Knowing I failed, I climbed out of the pool, embarrassed.

With my heart knocking wildly, I walked down the diving board towards its end. Looking down, I found all
my classmates were looking up at me. My face suddenly felt hot. Finally, I ignored them. Picturing the four
steps of diving, I jumped. Then I folded my body but failed to reach my toes. And instead of entering the wa-
ter like an arrow, I fell into the water, with my body being flat. As a result, it caused a huge sound, which
made all the classmates burst out laughing.
Knowing I failed, I climbed out of the pool, embarrassed. After class, Ms. Robbins comforted and encour-
aged me. In the following many Monday mornings, I practiced again and again under her guidance. Gradual-
ly, I became more confident and less shy. Finally, I attended the diving test again and performed well. This
time, my classmates cheered and clapped. I was so glad. I knew my success resulted from Ms. Robbins' en-
couragement, my beating my shyness and my hard practice.
