Disheartened by the two failures, I was forced to abandon my early ambition of becoming a painter. I thus chose a different career path and went on to learn how to pilot airplanes. Why do they survive the tough times when others are overcome by them? Why do they win when others lose? The answer is very simple. It's all in how they perceive their problems. Yes, every living person has varied problems. Evidently,a problem-free life is 1 illusion—a mirage(海市蜃楼) in the desert. Accept that fact. Life has its ups and downs, its peaks and its 2 (valley). No one is up all the time, 3 are they down all the time. You may not have chosen your tough time, but you can choose how you will react to it. Would it be the reaction to escape and run away? No! Such negative reactions only produce greater prob- lems by 4 (promise) a temporary “solution” to the pressing problem. The positive solution to a problem 第1讲 描述运动的基本概念 may require courage 5 (initiate) it. When you control your reaction to the seemingly 6 (control- lable) problem of life, then in fact you do control the problem's effect on you. As a consequence, your reac- tion to the problem is the last word, 7 is the bottom line. In the final analysis, the tough people who survive the tough times do so because they've chosen to re- act 8 (positive) to their tough times. Tough times never last, but tough people do. Tough people stick it out. History teaches us that every problem has a lifespan. No problem is permanent. Storms always give way 9 the sun. Winter always turns into springtime. Your storm will pass. Your winter will pass. Your prob- lem 10 (solve). 1._______ 2.________ 3._____________ 4.______________ 5.________________ 6.________________ 7.__________ 8.___________ 9._______ 10._______________ will be solved      to       positively      which      uncontrollable       to initiate      promising      nor/neither      valleys      an 没有问题的    3.stick it out坚持到底 1. 名词courage后面应用不 定式作定语,courage to do sth. 故填to initiate。 6. give way to为固定搭配,表示“向…… 故填to。 10. 根据上文的“Your storm will pass. It was always there, even in moments of success or after a kind word from a friend. It started after the doctors said I had autism(自闭症), and autism wasn't widely under- stood back then. My teachers didn't get me. My classmates always laughed at me. Through those years, I never wanted to admit I was autistic. I tried to hide it. But hiding only made the self-doubt stronger. During middle school, I received surgery on my back. I didn't pass many exams and kept failing the SATs. But something deep inside me told me, “Keep going.” So I did. After three tries, I finally passed— it wasn't an instant victory, but a gradual breakthrough. That was when I started writing. At first, it was just a way to get the thoughts out of my head. My voice had been quiet for so long, but 第1讲 描述运动的基本概念 now, on paper, it was starting to come through. I put my writing into a book and managed to get it published, although the process was filled with difficulties. People responded in ways I never expected. Some told me my words helped them feel less unnoticed. Others said they finally felt comforted, opening up about their own struggles. Parents reached me to say they had hope again. Hope that their child will be okay. I've since spoken at meetings and connected with people who once felt unseen by others. What matters most is not the achievements, but knowing that someone, somewhere, who feels like I once did, might hear my story and think, “Maybe I can do that too.” There's one moment I'll never forget. Once, after I shared my story at a graduation ceremony, a girl suddenly appeared and began to sing a beautiful song about wishing parents to get closer to their kids and help them. I was so touched. And once again, I was reminded that the voice I once tried to hide had helped someone else find theirs. 1.Which word can best describe the author's middle school life? A.Eventful. I didn't pass many exams and kept failing the SATs.” 故选A。 根据第三段第一句“At first, it was just a way to get the thoughts out of my head.” 故选A。 如A(熟能生巧。) B(行动胜于言辞。) C(分担烦恼减半。) D(个人经历可以照亮 他人道路。) In today's rapidly evolving world, the importance of critical thinking can't be overstated. Critical think- ing is the ability to analyze, evaluate, and reason about information in a logical and objective manner. 1 That is to say, it not only helps students analyze information and solve problems but also prepares them for the complexities of the future workplace. This essay will discuss the necessity of critical thinking in modern education and its various benefits. Critical thinking fosters intellectual curiosity and a love for learning. When students are encouraged to ask and analyze questions, they develop a deeper understanding of the subjects they study. 2 This en- courages them to explore new ideas and concepts, expanding their knowledge base. This leads to a more en- 第1讲 描述运动的基本概念 gaged and motivated learning experience. Critical thinking skills are essential for making informed decisions. In an age when information is readi- ly available but often unreliable, the ability to evaluate sources and distinguish facts from fiction is crucial. Students must learn to evaluate information critically and make informed decisions based on that evaluation. 3 4 Critical thinking promotes creativity and innovation. When students are not afraid to challenge conventional wisdom and think outside the box, they come up with novel solutions to complex problems. This ability to think critically and independently is what sets humans apart from other animals and machines. 5 This fosters an environment of creativity and innovation, which is vital for progress and development in any field. In conclusion, the inclusion of critical thinking in modern education is not just a nice addition but a ne- 第1讲 描述运动的基本概念 cessity. My initial motive was simple: I needed to fulfill community service hours required for grad- uation. However, what started as a mere obligation soon turned into a journey of meaningful personal growth and understanding. Upon my first visit to the shelter, I was instantly struck by the number of animals in need and the obvi- ous sense of urgency among the staff and volunteers. Dogs barked eagerly from their cages, while cats paced restlessly. The shelter manager, Mrs Clark, a veteran of animal rescue, guided me through the orientation 第1讲 描述运动的基本概念 process. She detailed the daily tasks which included feeding the animals, cleaning their living spaces, and, most importantly, spending time socializing with them. It was evident from the beginning that this work would demand more than just my time; it required compassion and commitment. As weeks turned into months, my connection with the animals gradually deepened. I learned to recog- nize their unique personalities and needs. Some were shy and withdrawn, needing much more time to en- gage, while others were excited and playful from the start. The more time I spent at the shelter, the more I realized how each interaction with an animal was a chance to provide them with a sense of security and love —a small comfort in their uncertain world. As a consequence, the responsibilities I held at the shelter also grew with time. Mrs Clark trusted me with more complex tasks such as administering medication and assisting in the adoption process. This trust not only boosted my confidence but also showed the importance of my role in these animals' lives. The grati- 第1讲 描述运动的基本概念 tude I saw in both the animals' and adopters' eyes was rewarding. As my senior year began, I took on even greater responsibilities at the shelter.                                                                                                                                                                            Reflecting on my time at the shelter, I realize how much I have grown, not just in skills but also in spirit. Mrs Clark appointed me as a volunteer coordinator, a role that involved training new volunteers. This position challenged me to develop leadership skills and learn how to manage a team effectively. Each day presented new challenges, from co- ordinating fund-raising events to handling the delicate situations of animals in distress. My ability to make quick, compassionate decisions grew, as did my commitment to the welfare of the animals and the shelter. Reflecting on my time at the shelter, I realize how much I have grown, not just in skills but also in spirit. The experience has instilled a lifelong commitment to animal welfare in me and has influenced my decision to pursue a career in animal medicine. The shelter has taught me about warmth, the impact of small acts of kindness, and the harmonious connection between humans and animals. This journey has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life, shaping me into a more empathetic and dedicated individual.
