Fear started taking over. I was walking into my first school in Peru. I had traveled a long distance from
India in order to join my parents, who had been here for three years, hoping Peru would help my future. My
father decided that I would be better off going to school here, so I enrolled(登记) in the local high school in
my new town.
I was afraid how I would do. On the first day, I went to my second period class after I had missed my
first. With anxiety, I reached for the door, opening it slowly: Without paying attention to my classmates, I
went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a soft voice he answered, “Yes.”
His voice comforted me a little. He gave me a piece of paper called Course Requirements, which I would
never get in India because we didn't have anything like that. Then he asked me to choose where I would sit. I
didn't actually want to pick a seat. In India we had fixed seats, so I never needed to worry about that. I spent
the rest of the class taking notes from the image produced by the overhead projector. In Indian schools, we
didn't use the technology we had. We had to take notes as the teacher spoke.
It was noon. I was very confused about when I would have lunch. I went to my next class and the bell
rang as I entered. I went through the regular process of asking the teacher if I was in the right class. She said,
“It's still the fourth period.”
“But the bell just rang,” I said.
Changing from a gentle tone to a harsher(刺耳的)one, she said, “That is the lunch bell, young man.”
I apologized. Without another word I headed for the cafeteria. I felt lucky because we didn't have this in
India. Every confusion seemed like a barrier I had to get through to reach my goal. At the end of the day, I
was on my way to the bus which we didn't have in India either. I spotted my bus and sat down inside happi-
ly. I was thinking, today wasn't so bad.

C
Although South Africans are known for their friendliness and warmth, our accent(口音)is not well-re-
ceived, with a new study showing our accent is the world's 12th friendliest. According to the study, only 1 in
every 100 participants considered the South African accent the most friendly-sounding—a big drop since 20
19 when it was considered the second most beautiful accent worldwide, which was an astonishing result for
me.
The study found Americans had the friendliest English accent in the world with one in five seeing the
American accent as the friendliest. Though the Canadian accent is the most closely related to general Ameri-
can English, with similar rules for pronunciation and the accent, only one in 12 selected it as the friendliest
accent. The British accent is considered the second most friendly accent, with one in seven selecting it as the
friendliest accent. The Australian accent came in third place, with almost one in 10 considering it to be
friendly. Although the New Zealand accent is similar to the Australian accent, New Zealanders came 15th
with just 1 in 100 choosing the Kiwi accent as the friendliest accent.
In understanding why some accents are viewed as more friendly than others, Dr Christopher Strelluf from
the University of Warwick said attitudes towards language varieties(变体)usually show the ideas we have
about people who speak those varieties. “If people around the world think American English sounds friend-
ly, it's good news for Americans because it means people think of Americans as friendly people.”
“The meaning of Englishes worldwide is also changing rapidly across many dimensions(维度). For
example, while British English has historically provided an international model for ‘correct’ English,
people who live in countries where English is being learned for getting into the global marketplace increas-
ingly prefer American English as their standard,” said Strelluf.
“In this study, the attitudes towards English show the basic ways we continue to find our way through
social relationships using language and our thoughts about language.”
28.How does the author probably feel about the study?
A.Excited. B.Doubtful. C.Surprised. D.Satisfied.

29.Which of the four accents is the least friendly according to the study?
A.The American accent. B.The Canadian accent.
C.The Australian accent. D.The British accent.
30.What can the study lead people to think according to Strelluf?
A.Americans are nice and warm.
B.Americans are usually talkative.
C.Americans like language to be varied.
D.Americans like to explore the world.
根据第三段中Strelluf的话“If people around the world think American English
sounds friendly, it's good news for Americans because it means people think of Americans as friendly
people.” 故选A。
31.Why does Strelluf mention people's preferred Englishes in paragraph 4?
A.To show the development of the global marketplace.
B.To explain the importance of learning “correct English”.
C.To draw attention to the changing face of global English.
D.To compare the difference of English in the UK and the US.
根据第四段中的“The meaning of Englishes worldwide is also changing rapidly
across many dimensions.”

D
A recent study from the University of Minnesota has discovered a simple and powerful way to improve
student learning: more natural light. The research team found that students in classrooms with large windows
and plenty of sunlight showed considerably better learning performance and focus levels, compared to those
in classrooms with smaller windows or primarily artificial(人工的) lighting.
Dr. Emily Carter, the lead researcher, explained the findings. “We've long believed that environment
matters, but this study provides strong evidence(证据)specifically for natural light,” she said. “It's not just
about seeing better; it's about the biological influence of sunlight on our focus and mood. This could be a
____________ for how we design schools.” She added that spending money on better window design and
skylights could be a cost-effective way to improve students' learning performance.
game-changer
The study involved 101 students from three local high schools. Each student took part in learning ses-
sions held in two different classroom environments on separate days: one was a “bright” room with large
windows allowing plenty of sunlight, and the other was a “standard” room with smaller windows and re-
lying mostly on ceiling lights. The students completed reading comprehension tasks and memory tests dur-
ing each session. To ensure fairness, the order in which students experienced the rooms was randomized(随
机安排), and the tasks were of similar difficulty.
The results were clear. On average, students scored 10% higher on the memory tests and reported feel-
ing more focused and less tired in the “bright” classroom. Dr. Carter and her team believe these findings
offer practical guidance. They suggest that school planners should think about how to get more natural light
when designing new school buildings. For existing buildings, simple changes, like moving desks closer to
windows or using lighter curtains to allow more light in, can make a real difference.

First, I think you may need to communicate with your classmates as much as possible. Second, it might
be a good idea for you to take part in more activities, which usually involve teamwork and interactions with
other students and are therefore good for developing friendly relationships. Lastly, faced with some tough

Word spread that Derek Rodgers, who had Down's syndrome(唐氏综合征), wanted to attend the
Homecoming Dance(返校日舞会).
I, a new journalist for the Campus News, was curious to know who would be his dance partner and de-
cided to cover his story. When I accompanied him on the way home one day, we were approached by Kelsey
Stuart, a popular student.
“Derek, I'd like to ask you to the Dance,” she smiled.
Derek was shocked. He couldn't believe that one of the prettiest girls in school was asking him.
Derek's face went red. “Why me?” he asked. “And shouldn't boys be the ones to do the asking?”
“I doubt you would, after all the rough experiences you've had. And we actually have more in com-
mon than you think. We both really want to go to the Dance. And we are not like those who are only con-
cerned about personal appearance.”
“But what do you see in me? How can I be the sort of guy you want to go with?”
“I know you are a gentleman and you'll treat me like a lady and I'll feel safe with you,” she said,
leaving with a smile.
The entire school went crazy when they learned that Kelsey was Derek's dance partner.
At first there were words that were not so nice about them. Their classmate, Billy, made fun of them by
giving them stupid names. Betty, Kelsey's best friend, stopped hanging out with her because she couldn't un-
derstand her choice at all.
Despite the words around, every day after school, the two still stayed behind to practice their dance rou-

One possible version:
Finally, the two getting ready, the Dance began. When Kelsey, holding Derek's arm, entered the room,
time almost stopped. Everyone looked in their direction, amazed at the perfection of the couple. As the soft
music started up, Derek led Kelsey to the center, his steps steady and fluent, his movement gentle and elegant.
Kelsey couldn't hold back her smile as she enjoyed the moment, and Derek, immersed in the dance, was joy-
ous and proud. With a stunning spin, they finished their dance successfully.
After the Dance, students gathered around Kelsey and Derek. Billy, his face burning, came over to apolo-
gize. “I was wrong to make all those names,” he said with regret in his eyes. “You two looked great.”
Betty approached Kelsey, her head down. “Sorry,” she murmured. “Are we still friends?” Getting a
yes, she even asked how Kelsey taught Derek all those moves. Enveloped in cheers, applause and praise,
Kelsey knew she had made the best choice ever, because she chose to see the beauty beyond.
