“You’ll never find a rainbow if you look down!”
Send me a worry, and I’ll send you a quote (暖心语录) for free! If you like the quote, please let me know.
Drummer Boy
I got a drum kit (套装) for my 16th birthday. There’s a cool band at school. Their drummer, Lucas, is leaving as his family’s moving. The band asked if I’d try out and Lucas will teach me. But I’m not sure if I’m good enough. I don’t want to get my hopes up and be upset if I don’t make it.

I’m in a difficult situation. My aunt and uncle in the US invited me for a month. It sounds great, but they live in a small town and have no kids. I’m worried there won’t be anyone my age to hang out with. I’m afraid I’ll regret whatever I decide. Help!
Alice 9:10 p.m. |3rd May
Winston Churchill said, “A negative (消极的) thinker sees the difficulty in every chance; a positive (积极的) thinker sees the chance in every difficulty.” Even if there are problems, there are also great things you can do there that you can’t at home. So, go and remember the rainbow!

Thursday
Well, Dad is really serious about me taking on more responsibility (责任). And the first thing he wants me to do is start waking myself up in the morning.
That’s actually a real problem, because I depend on HIM to wake me up.
That’s the way we’ve been doing it for YEARS, and I really don’t see any reason to change things now.
Dad said that if I don’t learn to wake myself up with an alarm clock, then I’m not going to know how to do it when I go off to college.
But I always found that would be the way me and Dad would stay in touch.
Yesterday was the first day I tried to wake myself up, and it didn’t work out so well. My alarm went off, but the sound just worked its way into my dream.
And today didn’t go any better. I set my alarm to “radio” and tuned it to a classical music station because I didn’t want to hear that annoying beep (烦人的哔哔声) first thing in the morning. But the music didn’t wake me up, either.
The problem is, without a real person waking me up, my brain is always going to find some excuse to keep sleeping. But I think I have worked out a way to solve this alarm clock situation. I found one of those old-style clocks in the storage room today, and those clocks make a huge sound when they go off.
I tested it out to see if it still worked and, just as expected, it did.
I don’t think ANYONE could sleep through a noise like THAT. The only problem is that the clock doesn’t have a “snooze” bar (贪睡按钮), so I’m worried I’ll shut it off and fall back asleep.
So tonight I hid the clock under my bed. This way, when the alarm goes off, I’ll have to get up to find the clock, and then I’ll be up for the day.
29. What’s the purpose of using “HIM” instead of “him”?
A. To tell readers the writer is shouting the word “him”.
B. To explain the writer is angry about his father’s new rule.
C. To show the writer really needs his father to wake him up.
D. To prove the writer dislikes getting in touch with his father.
30. What does the underlined word “way” in Paragraph 8 mean to the writer?
A. Going to bed earlier than usual.
B. Using his phone as an alarm clock.
C. Asking his father to wake him up as before.
D. Depending on an old-style clock to get up on time.
31. What is the picture here used for?
A. To tell most of the story. B. To help readers learn new words.
C. To add some numbers and facts. D. To make some details easy to imagine.
【答案】29. C 30. D 31. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了作者父亲要求作者自己起床,作者尝试闹钟和收音机失败后,找到旧式闹钟藏于床下以强迫自己起床的故事。
【29题详解】
根据文章“That’s actually a real problem, because I depend on HIM to wake me up.”可推知,作者使用大写的“HIM”是为了强调父亲叫醒他这一行为的重要性,表明作者真的需要父亲来叫醒他。
【30题详解】
根据文章“But I think I have worked out a way to solve this alarm clock situation. I found one of those old-style clocks... So tonight I hid the clock under my bed.”
C
Recent reports show that more teens feel sad or hopeless compared with ten years ago.
_____32_____ In his new book How We Grow Up: Understanding Adolescence, journalist Matt Richtel explores the reasons behind teen stress and how adults can help.
One reason why teens feel more stressed is that they have still-developing brains and think too much about what’s happening around them. _____33_____ At the same time, they face a fast-changing world full of information—from school, friends, and online. This can lead to overthinking and worry. Many people blame (责备) phones as the main cause of their stress. Too much screen time can indeed be harmful. But it’s not the only reason. That’s why simply taking away teens' phones won't solve this situation. What’s more important is helping them to find a balance—getting enough sleep, staying active, and having face-to-face conversations.
The teenage years are a time of big change, and this change itself is another cause of stress.
_____34_____ During this time, young people start to move from depending on their parents to being independent (独立的). This change is natural and necessary for growing up, but it can also bring stress—teens may not know how to make choices by themselves or they may worry that they can't do things well. This worry makes them question what their parents and teachers have taught them. The process makes them feel quite stressed.
That is why help from parents is so important. Sometimes, teens may feel down even in loving homes because emotions (情绪) are hard to understand. Just like an adult might get stressed at work, teens can feel too stressed to deal with many small things together. Understanding this can help parents be supportive. _____35_____ In this way, parents can be good guides for their children.
In short, mental health challenges in teens come from a mix of still-developing brains, the world around them, and the stress of growing up in a fast-changing world. To help with these problems, we shouldn’t just blame phones or be too strict with them. Instead, what matters is listening carefully, staying close to them, and guiding them with care and understanding.
32. What is more important for teens according to Paragraph 2?
A. Becoming more independent. B. Finding a healthy life balance.
C. Staying away from their phones. D. Dealing with emotional challenges.
33. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. What else brings teens stress and worries.
B. Why teens become independent of parents.
C. How teens deal with stress from their parents.
D. Why teens question what they've been taught.
34. It is better to put “Open talks and patience can build trust.” in ____.
A. 1 B. 2 C. 3 D. 4
35. How is the passage organized? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2, ③=Paragraph 3, ④=Paragraph 4, ⑤=Paragraph 5)
A. ① →②③④ →⑤ B. ①→② ③→④⑤ C. ①→②③ →④⑤ D. ①→② ③④→⑤
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. D 35. A

Having a teenager at home can be a real headache. Many teenagers smoke, wear strange hairstyles and even fight. Basically, they are often taking risks. Earlier studies have shown that teenagers are more likely to make irrational decisions than people from any other age group, including children and adults. Is it that teenagers are too young to tell right from wrong?
Not really. So what’s the reason? According to Laurence, a teacher from a US university, the reason is that teenagers care a lot about how their peers (同龄人) view them—that is “peer influence”. As children enter their teenage years, they spend more time with their friends and classmates, and they also care more about what they think of them.
This makes teenagers make decisions without thinking about the costs. In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends, watching around them, they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they drove more safely.
Why do peers have such a big influence on teens’ behavior? As Laurence sees it, a teenager’s brain is like a car with a good accelerator (油门) but a weak brake (刹车). The “accelerator” is fully developed by teenage years, while the “brake” is still not fully developed. When teenagers are watched by their peers, they usually push hard on the accelerator. With their weak brake, it is likely that they are going to end up in an accident. But the good news is that a violent (暴力的) teenager doesn’t necessarily become a violent adult. About two-thirds to three-quarters of violent youth grow out of it. “They get more self-controlled.”
36. What does the underlined word “irrational” in the first paragraph mean?
A. Quick. B. Crazy. C. Careful. D. Correct.
37. Why are teenagers often taking risks according to the text?
A. They like difficult tasks.
B. They care about costs.
C. They are too young to tell right from wrong.
D. They care a lot about what their peers think of them.
38. How does Laurence explain the effect of peer influence on teens’ behavior?
A. By using a metaphor (比喻).
B. By giving examples.
C. By presenting research findings.
D. By performing an in-depth analysis (分析).
39. According to the text, with peers around them, teenagers tend to (倾向于) ________.
A. use more self-control
B. focus more on short-term benefits
C. perform better than when they are alone
D. become more careful about what they do
40. What can we learn from the text?
A. Peer influence is bad for teenagers.
B. Teenagers are easy to have traffic accidents.
C. Most of the teenagers become less violent when they grow up.
D. Teenagers shouldn’t spend all the free time with their friends.
【答案】36. B 37. D 38. A 39. B 40. C
【解析】
【导语】本文主要介绍了青少年易受同龄人影响而冒险,但多数成年后会改善。
【36题详解】
词句猜测题。根据“Many teenagers smoke, wear strange hairstyles and even fight. Basically, they are often taking risks.”可知,他们吸烟、打架、冒险等行为,说明这些决定是“不理智的”,即:疯狂的决定,故此处划线部分意为“疯狂的”,和crazy意义相近。故选B。
【37题详解】
细节理解题。根据“According to Laurence, a teacher from a US university, the reason is that teenagers care a lot about how their peers (同龄人) view them—that is ‘peer influence’”可知,Laurence认为青少年冒险的原因是同龄人影响,即他们非常在意同龄人的看法。故选D。
【38题详解】
细节理解题。根据“As Laurence sees it, a teenager’s brain is like a car with a good accelerator (油门) but a weak brake (刹车)”可知,将青少年大脑比喻为“油门强但刹车弱”的汽车。故选A。
【39题详解】
推理判断题。根据“In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends, watching around them, they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they drove more safely.”可知,当朋友围观时,青少年在游戏中更冒险,说明他们更关注短期利益,而非长远后果。故选B。
【40题详解】
细节理解题。根据“About two-thirds to three-quarters of violent youth grow out of it. ‘They get more self-controlled.’”可知,约2/3到3/4有暴力倾向的青少年长大后不再暴力。故选C。

六、阅读填空(本题共19小题;满分20分)
A)
阅读下面短文,根据所读内容,在文章后第1-8小题的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词,注意第9小题不少于20词。
One of the biggest challenges in trying to achieve any personal goal is that you put them off until tomorrow, or next week. Unluckily, tomorrow never gets here. If you want to achieve a goal, you have to start on it today. Let’s learn some ways.
One goal at a time.
Often the problem is that you try to take on too many goals at once. You have a lot of things you want to complete. Even two goals at once is difficult. For now, one goal at a time. Once that’s finished, you can go to the next one. Make sure you really want it. It’s not enough to say, “It would be nice to learn French” or “It would be cool to do yoga every morning”. It has to be something you really want. Ask yourself why you set this goal, and how much time you need to spend on it. That’s important to do early, or you won’t make time for it.
Keep it simple.
It’s important not to make your personal goal too big. You don’t want to have a huge list of things to do. Instead, focus (关注) on a smaller sub-goal that will lead you to your bigger goal. Another way is to focus first on creating a habit leading you to your goal. For example, focus on forming the habit of walking each day. Once you’ve formed that habit, focus on drinking only water and then on eating fruits instead of junk snacks. And so on, until you’ve reached your goal.
Stay focused.
One of the most challenging things to achieve goals is keeping your focus on that goal. You may be attracted by other things, and when you lose focus, you suddenly stop making time for the goal. Therefore, you had better put a poster on your wall, or make your goal your computer desktop picture. Also you can tell others about it and have them help you achieve your goal.
How to Make the Time for Your Personal Goals
What makes it ____56____ for you to achieve your goal is that you choose to put it off.
However, time ____57____ for no man. Please start on your goal right now.
Setting a goal at a time
● You should ____58____ taking on too many goals at once. Once you complete one goal, you can go to the next one.
● Be sure to know the ____59____ for setting this goal and how long it takes you to achieve the goal.
● You won’t make time for it ____60____ you do it early.
Keeping it easy to reach
● Begin with the ____61____ goals and develop a habit that will lead you to your goal step by step.
____62____ focused on it
● Put your goal where you can see it ____63____ in order not to be attracted by something else.
● Tell others about your goal and ask them to encourage you.
Your ideas: (No less than 20 words.)
What goal do you want to achieve the most this year? What will you do to achieve it?

【56题详解】
根据文章第 1 段开头“One of the biggest challenges in trying to achieve any personal goal is that you put them off until tomorrow”,可推知拖延会让实现目标这件事变得有挑战性,make sth.+形容词,因此第1空填challenging。
【57题详解】
根据文章第 1 段“Unluckily, tomorrow never gets here”可推知,时间不等人,对应谚语“Time waits for no man”。故填waits。
【58题详解】

【59题详解】
文章第 2 段“Ask yourself why you set this goal, and how much time you need to spend on it.”,这句话是问你设定这个目标的缘由,why对应的名词是reason。可以理解为一个原因(单数reason),也可以理解为多种原因(复数reasons),两个形式都正确,因此第 4 空填 reason/reasons。
【60题详解】
文章第 2 段“That’s important to early, or you won’t make time for it.”,也就是除非你早点行动,否则你不会为目标腾出时间,unless意为除非,因此第5空填unless。
【61题详解】
文章第 3 段“Instead, focus on a smaller sub-goal that will lead you to your bigger goal.”,要从最小的目标开始,一步步养成习惯,因此第6空填smallest。
【62题详解】
根据文章第 4 段标题“Stay focused”可推知,此处为表格小标题,需与上文的Setting和Keeping保持形式一致,使用动名词。故填Staying。
【63题详解】
文章第 4 段“You may be attracted by other things...Therefore, you had better put a poster on your wall, or make your goal your computer desktop picture.”,把目标放在容易看见的地方,这样就不容易被别的事物吸引,副词easily修饰动词see,因此第8空填easily。
【64题详解】
本题为开放性试题,需回答最想实现的目标及具体措施,且不少于 20 词。示例答案表达了提高英语成绩的目标及阅读和口语练习的措施,符合字数要求。示例:I want to improve my English this year. I will listen to English articles every morning and take notes carefully in class. When meeting difficult problems, I will ask my teacher for help actively.

QUOTES FOR WORRIERS
“You’ll never find a rainbow if you look down!”
Send me a worry, and I’ll send you a quote (暖心语录) for free! If you like the quote, please let me know.
Drummer Boy
I got a drum kit (套装) for my 16th birthday. There’s a cool band at school. Their drummer, Lucas, is leaving as his family’s moving. The band asked if I’d try out and Lucas will teach me. But I’m not sure if I’m good enough. I don’t want to get my hopes up and be upset if I don’t make it.
Tim 7:20 p.m.|2nd May
Here’s a quote from Mahatma Gandhi: “Man often becomes what he believes himself to be.” If you keep saying you can’t do something, you might end up unable to. But if you believe you can, you’ll get the ability, even if you don’t have it at first.
Shall I Stay or Go?

①→② ③→④⑤ C. ①→②③ →④⑤ D. ①→② ③④→⑤
D
