Listening to birds and water can lower stress and improve mood, study finds.Researchers have long
known there are benefits from being in nature.Living around trees can help you live longer.Walking in the
woods is good for your mood.Being near water can have positive effects on your well-being.
A new study finds.that natural sounds otter health benefits too. There is plenty of evidence that
spending time in natural areas is good for our health-but typically this research is done from a visual
perspective, but we are curious what the role is of sounds we hear in these spaces.
Some examples they found reported in those studies included decreased pain, lowered stress,
improved mood, and better cognitive function. With these results in hand, they then listened to
audio recordings from 251 sites in 68 national parks across the United States.
The sites with the most natural sounds and the lowest man-made sounds were locatedin Alaska,
Hawati, and the Pacific Northwest and were far from urban areas.Only three locations with high natural
sounds and low noise pollution were within 100 kilometers(62 miles)of urban areas.
However, despite human-made noises being heard most of the time at sites in urban locations, birds
were still heard about 60%of the time and geophysical sounds like wind and rain heard about 19%of the
time.
Not all natural sounds deliver the same benefits.the researchers found. For example, they discovered
that the sounds of water had the largest impact on improving positive emotions and health outcomes, while
bird sounds ease stress and annoyance. And the sounds of both birds and water were heard more than 23%
2-
of the time in the national park recording sites.
Interestingly, there was also some evidence that natural sounds have benefits over silence. There was
also evidence that more different types of natural sounds-more types of birds singing rather than just one
type of bird-have benefits over fewer sounds.
24.What does the new study focus on?
A.The effect natural sounds have on health.
B.The harm man-made sounds do to health.
C.The benefits natural sounds bring to the environment.
D.The effect nature has on people from visual perspective.
25.What is an ideal site according to paragraph 4?
A.It is away from cities.
B.It has no noise pollution.
C It has bird songs most of the time.
D.It is within 62 miles of urban areas.
26.What brings-more benefits/to people?
A.The silence of nature.
B.The sounds of water.
C The diversity of natural sounds.
D.Natural sounds mixed with noises.
27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.It Is Beneficial to Live Close to Water
B.We Are Surrounded by All Kinds of Sounds
C.The Sounds of Nature Affect Your Well-being
D.Man-made Noise Pollution Is Harmful to Our Health

In perhaps the most ferocious race in swimming, the 19-year-old Pan edged Kyle Chalmers of

No world marks had been broken through the first four days in the pool at the Paris Games.
Chalmers wou gold in the 100 free in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, and was the silver medalist
three years ago in Tokyo behind American Caeleb Dressel.Dressel did not qualify this time.
Pan has not been implicated in any of the doping allegations that have surrounded the Chinese
swimming team in the run-up to the Olympics.
Chinese swimmers in Paris have pushed back strongly against those accusations and say they have
been tested more frequently in recent months, sometimes three or four times a week.
Pan was asked about the testing and said it all seemed routine to him.
This was standard,"he said."The tests were done under all the regulations.I don't think it
influenced my performance."
WADA,the World Anti-Doping Agency, put out a statement on Tuesday in response to food
contamination scenarios being used to clear athletes who test positive.
"WADA is generally concerned about the number of cases that are being closed without sanction
when it is not possible to challenge the contamination theory,"the statement said.
"There have been many cases of positive tests that were eventually closed without sanction as
no-fault violations, sometimes with unusual methods of contamination."WADA said it was also concerned
about similar cases in the United States.

U.S.teens spend more than eight hours a day on screens, and there's growing concem over how
social media may affect their mental health. Now,a new study has found that limiting screen time to about
one hour a day helped anxious teens feel better about their body image and their appearance.
The study arose from the personal experience of Helen Thai,a doctoral student in psychology at
MeGill University."What I noticed when I was joining in social media was that I couldn't help but compare
(比较)myself,”Thai says.Reading posts(帖子)from famous people and influencers,as well as people in
her own social network, led to a lack of self-confidence.
So,Thai and a team of researchers decided to test whether cutting time on social media platforms
including Instagram,TikTok and Snapchat would improve body image. They gathered a few hundred
volunteers, aged 17-25,all of whom had experienced symptoms (of anxiety or depression-which
could make them easily influenced by social media.Half of the volunteers were asked to reduce their social
media to 60 minutes a day for three weeks. The other half eontinued to use social media with no limits.
The researchers gave the participants surveys at the peginning and end of the study, which included
一类语双3单2分开印481份02
statements such as I'm pretty happy about the way I look,"and"I am satisfied with my weight."Among
the group that cut social media use,the overall score on appearance improved from 2.95 to 3.15 on a 5-
point scale. The change may seem small, but any change in such a short period of time is worth noticing.
"The study is encouraging, but it only included people who had symptoms of anxiety or depression.
It's worth applying this approach to other groups, such as people with eating problems. It's also possible
that the benefits of cutting back could extend more broadly to anyone in this age group,"says Psychologist
Andrea Graham,co-director of the Center for Behavioral Intervention at Northwestern University.
32.What problem may social media bring to teenagers according to Thai?
A.They may become addicted to the Internet.
B.They tend to become sensitive to others'words.
C.They may have unrealistic expectations of their image.
D.They tend to compare themselves with the images posted online.
33.How was the research conducted by Thai and a team of researchers?
A.By listing numbers.
B.By giving examples.
C.By making comparisons.
D.By analyzing causes and effects.
64 What did Graham think of the study.
A.It was a good try but should include more people.
B.It was well designed but wasn't finished.
C.It was a failure but the methods were worth praising.
D.It was encouraging but the evidence was not to be trusted.
35.Which ofthe following is the best title for the text?
A.How to Help Teenagers Limit Screen time
B.Shorter Screen Time,Better Feelings on Look
C.How Social Media Changes Teenagers
D.Less Anxiety,Better Image
