The Future of Clean Energy in Homes
Heating, cooling, and powering homes contribute significantly to global CO₂ emissions. As nations strive to reduce their carbon footprints, residential energy use — responsible for nearly 20% of energy-related emissions — poses unique challenges. Below is the 2022 breakdown of household emissions by source.
ELECTRICITY 52%
HEATING 28%
COOLING 12%
APPLIANCES 6%
LIGHTING 2%
Clean energy solutions for homes must be affordable, efficient, and adaptable to diverse climates. While technologies vary, here are key innovations driving the shift toward sustainability.
HEAT PUMPS — Efficient Temperature Regulation
Replacing gas boilers, electric heat pumps transfer warmth from air or ground, cutting heating emissions by 50%. Hybrid models, hopefully, might be able to work in sub-zero temperatures in the near future.
SMART GRIDS (电网) — Intelligent Power Management
AI-powered grids optimize energy use, storing excess solar power during peak hours and reducing reliance on fossil-fuel backups.

Cliff Young, a humble potato farmer from Australia, was far from a celebrity yet proved that ordinary individuals are capable of extraordinary achievements. In 1983, a grueling 875-kilometer ultra-marathon was held in Australia, attracting world-class athletes in their twenties equipped with state-of-the-art gear. Then, almost out of nowhere, the 61-year-old Cliff showed up, without any sponsor or professional trainer, dressed in farm overalls and work boots. When he registered, people assumed he had lost his mind; the press even warned him that he might not survive the torture. Cliff simply laughed it off, embodying the ultimate underdog. Beneath his worn-out overalls lay an iron will and a heart full of courage.
As the race commenced, the young professionals quickly left him in the dust. Cliff’s peculiar, sluggish running style — a mere shuffle — drew strange looks. However, he possessed a secret weapon: having grown up on a vast farm, he used to herd sheep on foot for days without rest. The amusing twist was that professional runners typically ran for 18 hours and slept for 6, but nobody informed Cliff of this “rule.” He simply turned a blind eye to the so-called regulations and kept running day and night. He kept moving forward even when his legs screamed in protest.
While the professionals were asleep, Cliff gradually caught up. By the final day, this elderly farmer had completely stolen the show. Against all odds, he crossed the finish line first, shattering the previous race record by nearly two days. His victory was not just a personal triumph but an inspiration to millions. When he received the $10,000 prize, he did not keep a single penny; instead, he divided it equally among the other runners, revealing his heart of gold.
Cliff Young demonstrated that slow and steady truly wins the race. The next time you feel like a “nobody” facing a giant challenge, don’t sell yourself short. Just lace up your boots, go the extra mile, and keep pushing forward — you might just surprise the world. Never underestimate the power of persistence. Dare to be different and keep on going.
4. What can be inferred about Cliff from the first paragraph?
A. He was well prepared for the race.
B. He had trained professionally before.
C. He was supported by a sponsor.
D. He was considered unlikely to finish the race.
5. What does Cliff’s sheep-herding experience imply?
A. It gave him great endurance. B. It reduced his need for sleep.
C. It improved his speed a lot. D. It developed his love for sheep.
6. Which words can best describe Cliff Young?
A. Determined and generous. B. Brave and fearless.
C. Humorous and wealthy. D. Proud and stubborn.
7. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Running speed helps athletes achieve fame.
B. Natural talent helps athletes achieve success.
C. Persistence helps ordinary people achieve greatness.
D. Advanced equipment helps athletes improve performance.
C
Summer comes, and mosquitoes constantly buzz and bite, leaving red marks and ruining our sleep.
To fight them, DEET (避蚊胺) is assumed to be the gold standard for preventing mosquito bites. Most researchers agree that a key part of its effectiveness is unpleasantness — the bugs just hate to be around it. However, some mosquitoes seem capable of overcoming their revulsion, leading to the theory that the insects might be getting used to the chemical.
Claudio Lazzari at the University of Tours set out to investigate, by running a version of the experiments made by Ivan Pavlov in the late 1800s where dogs were conditioned to associate sounds with food. In those experiments, Pavlov routinely rang a signal bell and then immediately fed the dogs. Eventually, when he made the sounds but didn’t provide food, he found the animals still salivated (流口水), as they would before a meal.
In his experiments, Dr Lazzari presented hungry mosquitoes with warm sheep’s blood while being exposed to a gentle breeze of ordinary air or of air blown past a piece of paper soaked in DEET. After many similar repeated experiments, the researchers then bravely presented their own hands to the insects. One hand was covered in DEET while the other was left untreated. To their frustration, they observed that 60% of the mosquitoes that had been presented with blood while being exposed to DEET bit the hand coated in DEET. In contrast, all mosquitoes trained with ordinary air avoided it entirely
Dr Lazzari’s conditioning in the laboratory was important for the mosquitoes in developing their fondness for DEET. But the chances are good that a similar scene is taking place in the real world, where the effects of DEET typically weaken over time, especially when people are sweating or not applying enough of the stuff in the first place.
In such circumstances, hungry mosquitoes are most likely to be able to tolerate the faint smell of DEET, bite a lightly protected person, begin connecting the smell with food and become more dangerous to those they encounter later in their lives.
8. What does the underlined word “revulsion” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Disgust. B. Concern. C. Doubt. D. Appetite.
9. Why was Pavlov’s experiment mentioned?
A. To justify DEET’s practical value. B. To analyze insect control strategies.
C. To clarify conditioning mechanisms. D. To identify animals’ learning patterns.
10. What can we know from Lazzari’s study?
A. DEET reduces mosquitoes’ desire for blood.
B. Ordinary air increases mosquitoes’ boldness.
C. Mosquitoes develop advanced cognitive abilities.
D. Mosquitoes form conditioned responses to stimuli.
11. What can be inferred from real-world DEET application?
A. It helps people adapt to mosquito bites.
B. It should be combined with other products.
C. It might heighten the risk of mosquito attacks.
D. It will entirely fall out of popularity among users.
D
Science fiction is gradually turning into reality. Researchers at Zhejiang University have developed stable self-luminous (自发光) plants, a sustainable technology that brings new possibilities for ecological construction and urban development.
The study originated from a scientific inquiry. Unlike some animals and tiny living creatures that can produce light naturally, common plants lack the ability of self-luminescence. Earlier attempts to create glowing plants had obvious limitations. Firefly-gene-based systems needed expensive external chemicals and only produced weak light, while bacterial luminescence tools limited plant growth and applied to few plant species.
To overcome these drawbacks, the team drew on the luminescence mechanism of glowing mushrooms and achieved a key breakthrough. They introduced four optimized enzyme (酶) genes into plant genomes. Relying on caffeic acid (咖啡酸), a natural substance in nearly all plants, the plants can produce green light through enzymatic reactions. The reaction products can be recycled into caffeic acid, allowing continuous and stable luminescence without extra energy or chemical input, and it will not affect normal plant growth.
To improve brightness and stability, the team put forward a “supply increase and loss reduction” approach. They built a new biological pathway to generate more light-generating materials and adopted machine-learning analysis to block internal biological reactions that consume caffeic acid. The upgraded second-generation plants are over 20 times brighter than the original versions, and removed leaves can remain luminous for three days, marking a major practical breakthrough.
This innovative technology has rosy practical prospects. It converts solar energy into biological light with extremely low energy consumption, promising to replace part of traditional lighting and cut power waste. It can also be widely applied in urban landscaping and cultural tourism industries. Additionally, its stable luminous signals can support biomedical research in tracking biological changes, providing sustainable solutions for social and scientific development.
12. What matters most for the plants’ steady light production?
A. The recycling of caffeic acid.
B. The release of external chemicals.
C. The efficiency of enzymes in plants.
D. The duration of enzymatic reactions.
13. What did the researchers do to lower caffeic-acid consumption?
A. Limit the natural growth of plant leaves.
B. Upgrade the luminous brightness of plants.
C. Adopt the technique of genetic engineering.
D. Regulate inner biological processes of plants.
14. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Choice of new research methods. B. Possible direction for further study.
C. Potential application of the findings. D. Adjustment to research for sustainability.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Inspiration From Glowing Mushrooms
B. Self-luminous Plants: A Scientific Breakthrough
C. Various Strategies to Make Plants Give Off Light
D. Caffeic Acid: An Essential Substance for Plant Light

China’s Young People Return to Their Cultural Roots
In recent years, a cultural change has quietly spread across China. Young people, once thought to be mainly interested in Western music, films, and fashion, are now showing growing interest in their own history and traditions. This movement, often known as “guochao,” or the national trend, can be seen in daily life, on university campuses, and across social media. ____16____
One clear example of “guochao” is hanfu, the traditional clothing of the Han Chinese. It used to be a special interest shared by only a small group of history lovers. Today, however, it has become a popular style. At weekends, young people wearing long robes and traditional hair decorations can often be seen in old towns, parks, and shopping centers. The hanfu market is now worth billions of yuan, and most buyers are under thirty. ____17____ For them, the value of hanfu lies in the cultural confidence it represents, rather than in the number of likes it gains on social media. For these young people, hanfu is a way of declaring that Chinese aesthetics and values are as relevant today as they were centuries ago.
Young people are also taking an interest in traditional crafts. Some are learning skills such as embroidery, lacquer work, and making velvet flowers. At the same time, they are bringing these old skills up to date. ____18____ For example, they make modern phone cases, earrings, and small pieces of furniture. Through short-video websites, young craftsmen can share their work with millions of people. In this way, an old craft can become both a business and a source of pride.
Museums have also become popular places for young visitors. Many are willing to wait for hours to see exhibitions of ancient objects, calligraphy, and paintings. Some popular exhibitions sell out their tickets within minutes. Compared with the past, museum visitors are now much younger. ____19____ Social media has made traditional culture easier and more attractive to young people. More importantly, in a fast-changing world, they want to find their roots and understand who they are. They no longer believe that Western culture is the only way to become modern.
Although some people worry that tradition may become too commercial, the trend is generally positive. It encourages young people to discover their heritage and helps them see that the wisdom of the past can inform the decisions of the future. ____20____ Rather than simply receiving history, today’s young people are giving it new life.
A. There are several reasons for this change.
B. Many young people take up hanfu just for social media likes.
C. The reasons behind this trend, however, are not purely commercial.
D. Young people are also finding new ways to develop traditional crafts.
E. It is changing the way young Chinese people understand their identity.
F. Modernity does not have to erase traditions; it can actually build on them.
G. The future of Chinese culture depends on the young generation’s creativity.

My best friend, Emily, and I had been inseparable since middle school. We shared everything — lunches, secrets, and dreams for the future. Yet as graduation approached, the mounting stress of exams and college applications began to take its toll on both of us. We studied side by side and promised to get through this together.
The turning point came after the midterm examination. I had prepared for weeks — sacrificing sleep and skipping social gatherings — yet my score fell far below my expectation. Finally, on the other hand, Emily received the highest grade in our class. She tried to be kind about it, never bragging or even mentioning her score. But somehow, that made things worse.
She came to me that afternoon with my favorite snacks. “It’s just one exam,” she said gently. “You’ll do better next time.” I nodded but could not bring myself to look at her. She attempted to lighten the mood with silly jokes, but every word felt like a reminder of the growing gap between us. Then she said, half-jokingly, “Come on, don’t be so negative. It’s not the end of the world.”
Something inside me broke. “Easy for you to say,” I erupted. “You’re not the one who failed.” The moment the words left my mouth, I regretted it. Her face fell. She parted her lips to respond, but no words came. After a long, painful silence, she simply stood up and walked away without a word.
The following days were cold and heavy. We stopped sitting together at lunch. She found a new table, and I did the same. We passed each other in the hallways like strangers. I could tell she was hurting too, but pride kept us both frozen. The silence between us was not empty — it was loaded with guilt, pride, and everything we wished we could say.
It was not until our English teacher assigned us to work together on a final presentation that we were forced to confront each other. When I saw our names paired on the list, I felt a sense of dread, knowing there was no way out.

Residential renewables like solar and heat pumps could meet 90% of global household demand by 2050 — but only if investments triple within this decade. Recent studies show that every $1 invested in green homes today saves $5 in future climate adaptation costs. This isn’t just an environmental imperative; it’s economically inevitable.

【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. C
【解析】
【导语】文章主要讲述蚊子经条件反射可适应避蚊胺,反而更敢叮咬人。
【8题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“To fight them, DEET (避蚊胺) is assumed to be the gold standard for preventing mosquito bites. Most researchers agree that a key part of its effectiveness is unpleasantness — the bugs just hate to be around it. However, some mosquitoes seem capable of overcoming their revulsion, leading to the theory that the insects might be getting used to the chemical.(为了防治蚊虫叮咬,避蚊胺(DEET)被认为是预防蚊虫叮咬的黄金标准。大多数研究人员认为,其有效性的关键在于产生不适感——这些昆虫讨厌接触它。然而,一些蚊子似乎能够克服它们的revulsion,因此有人提出,这些昆虫可能已经对这种化学物质产生了耐受性)可知,蚊子对避蚊胺是讨厌、反感的态度,revulsion与hate、unpleasantness同源,意为“厌恶、反感”,与Disgust意思相同。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Claudio Lazzari at the University of Tours set out to investigate, by running a version of the experiments made by Ivan Pavlov in the late 1800s where dogs were conditioned to associate sounds with food.(图尔大学的克劳迪奥·拉扎里着手调查,方式是开展了参考伊万·巴甫洛夫实验思路的变体实验(巴甫洛夫于19世纪末开展实验,训练狗将声音与食物建立关联))”以及“Eventually, when he made the sounds but didn’t provide food, he found the animals still salivated, as they would before a meal.(最终,当他发出声音却不给食物时,他发现动物仍像餐前一样流口水)”可知,提到巴甫洛夫实验是为了说明“条件反射”这一机制,从而解释蚊子如何把避蚊胺气味和食物建立联系,即为了澄清条件反射机制。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“After many similar repeated experiments, the researchers then bravely presented their own hands to the insects. One hand was covered in DEET while the other was left untreated. To their frustration, they observed that 60% of the mosquitoes that had been presented with blood while being exposed to DEET bit the hand coated in DEET.(经过许多次类似的重复实验后,研究人员接着勇敢地把他们自己的手伸给蚊子。
根据第五段中“But the chances are good that a similar scene is taking place in the real world, where the effects of DEET typically weaken over time, especially when people are sweating or not applying enough of the stuff in the first place.(但现实世界中很可能正在发生类似的情况,因为避蚊胺的效果通常会随着时间推移而减弱,尤其是当人们出汗或一开始没有充分涂抹时)”以及第六段中“In such circumstances, hungry mosquitoes are most likely to be able to tolerate the faint smell of DEET, bite a lightly protected person, begin connecting the smell with food and become more dangerous to those they encounter later in their lives.(在这种情况下,饥饿的蚊子极有可能忍受避蚊胺的淡淡气味,咬防护不足的人,开始把这种气味和食物联系起来,并对它们日后遇到的那些人变得更危险)”可知,现实中使用避蚊胺可能让蚊子适应气味、更敢叮咬,即它可能加大被蚊子攻击的风险。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Finally, the day came for us to team up for our task. Sitting face-to-face at the library table, we sank into an awkward silence first. I fumbled with my notebook, too nervous to break the ice. It was Emily that lowered her head and murmured an apology for her careless words that day. Hearing this, my cheeks burned with shame. I admitted bitterly that my envy had made me lose my temper. Only then did I realize how foolish my pride had been. We both sighed, and slowly reached out our hands to each other, a faint smile flickering across our faces.
With the conflict resolved, we threw ourselves into preparing the presentation. We brainstormed ideas, searched for materials, and practiced our lines again and again. Whenever I felt discouraged, Emily comforted me patiently. While working, we poured out our inner worries about college applications. All the misunderstanding faded away gradually. Though the stressful senior year was still ahead, we regained precious friendship, firmly believing we would walk through the hard time side by side once more.
