Go on an environmental field trip
While outdoor field studies can happen throughout the year we hope this month’s “Growing Healthy Schools” theme inspires you to plan something special that will connect your students to the world around them.
Below are some recommendations on activities and projects:
Explore your neighbourhood
See the environmental features of the district’s neighbourhoods through the eyes of a landscape architect by going on a self-guided walking tour developed by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).
Get close to the Anacostia River
Take your students on the water by going on a field experience with Anacostia Watershed Society, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, or Living Classrooms. Want to stay on land? Try visiting Kingman Island or Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens to see amazing wildlife habitat along the river that runs through the district.
Discover environmental exhibits at museums
Here are some ideas of museum exhibits and programmes on the National Mall that can integrate environmental themes: history of food, plants, Native Americans, natural history investigations, and satellite observations.
Go fishing
Want to see the fish, frogs, and turtles that call the district home? Take a tour of the Aquatic Resources Education Centre, where you can also schedule a fishing activity for your students. For more information, contact Teresa Rodriguez by e-mailing Teresa.Rodriguez@ dc.gov.
If you would like assistance planning or carrying out any of these projects, please contact Grace Manubay, an environmental officer at the Office of the State Superintendent of Education by e-mailing Grace.Manubay@dc.gov or visiting OSSE’s website.

Hope and opportunity are blossoming (绽放) on the South Side of Chicago where a man and his wife have used flowers to help poor communities turn over a new leaf. Running two nonprofits, Southside Blooms and Chicago Eco House, Quilen Blackwell and his wife Hannah Bonham are helping at-risk youth find opportunity.
Blackwell’s work earned him the CNN Hero of the Year award at the 19th edition of the honour, organized by the cable news outlet with support from corporate sponsors. The award came with a $100,000 prize to expand the Blackwell’s work. Southside Blooms turns vacant lots (空地) on Chicago’s South Side into eco-friendly flower farms, employing local young people to grow, harvest, arrange, and sell flowers at his group’s nonprofit flower shop.
Why flowers? When Blackwell, a Wisconsin native, moved to Chicago to attend ministry school, he ended up in Englewood where some 40% of residents live in poverty. Blackwell happened upon an eye-opening figure that more than 70% of cut flowers bought in the US are imported. Blackwell believed that flowers might be the answer to reconnecting Englewood youth to nature, while at the same time growing something meaningful in between boarded-up shops, abandoned buildings and empty lots.
By 2021, Chicago Eco House had already turned 6 vacant South Side lots into solar-powered farms, with the flowers sold through Southside Blooms.
“A lot of the most beautiful flowers we grow do very well in adverse conditions, and that’s just like the people here,” Blackwell narrated in an interview. Southside Blooms currently employs 25 young people primarily between the ages of 16 and 25. “As long as they’re getting all of the ingredients they need to be successful, there’s nothing that they can’t do,” he said. “Our young people are blossoming every single day.”
Holding the CNN Hero award in his arms, what Blackwell was keen to communicate was the strength and character of his team: his wife, and the young men and women who make the project possible.
( )24.What is the significance of the CNN Hero award in the story?
A.It attracts participants.
B.It promotes flower-planting skills.
C.It acknowledges Blackwell’s efforts.
D.It encourages others to copy Blackwell’s idea.
( )25.What inspired Blackwell to start growing flowers in Englewood?
A.The lack of local flower shops.
B.The low demand for imported flowers.
C.The potential to connect youth with nature.
D.The encouragement from his ministry school.
( )26.What does the underlined word “adverse” mean in Paragraph 5?
A.Tough. B.Alternative.
C.Stable. D.Controllable.
( )27.What is the author’s attitude towards Blackwell’s project?
A.Supportive. B.Neutral.
C.Dismissive. D.Critical.

Huge piles of researches on diet are published annually. The most shocking of these get reported in the media. All claim to be based on the latest research and each claims to prove the last study wrong. Do scientists really not know what’s good for us, or is the news report to blame for the confusion?
Misleading media coverage plays a role, but publication bias (偏见) is one major source: studies that show surprising results are more likely to get published. “What you see published in the nightly news is the end result of a system where everyone is encouraged to come up with a positive result,” says Vinay at Oregon Health & Science University.
One way to get around this problem is to conduct large, randomized controlled trials, which involve randomly assigning participants to different groups to control variables. But these kinds of studies are difficult to do for foods, as few would risk changing eating habits randomly; fewer still sustain changes long enough to benefit. Instead, nutrition scientists usually observe what people eat by asking them to fill out food diaries, and then track the health of participants over a given period of time.
In these “observational” studies, people track their diets while going about their lives. Differences between subjects in what they do outside of mealtimes can make all the difference. People who eat what is seen as an unhealthy diet—with more fast food, for instance—might have unhealthy lifestyles in other ways, such as smoking. Consequently, dietary effects are hard to set apart.
Because of these difficulties, even today’s most recommended dietary advice lacks good quality evidence. This doesn’t mean we can eat as much cake as we like. But it does suggest that within limits of common sense, one way of eating is about as good as another. While admittedly simple advice, it removes the pressure to constantly run after the latest amazing diet or fear seemingly harmful foods. Within reason, trusting your stomach is mostly fine.
( )28.What phenomenon is presented in Paragraph 1?
A.Scientists fail to figure out truth.
B.News spreads confusion on purpose.
C.Research on diet astonishes people.
D.Media reports conflicting diet studies.
( )29.Which of the following news items suggests publication bias?
A.Chocolate unexpectedly aids weight loss.
B.Calorie restriction helps to slow aging.
C.Effects of zero fat diet require further tests.
D.Whole grain diet improves heart health.
( )30.What do Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly discuss?
A.The reliability of self-reported diet data.
B.How long-term diet tracking improves health.
C.The main problems in studying dietary effects.
D.How lifestyle factors affect diet research results.
( )31.What is the author’s suggestion for food choice?
A.Avoid potentially unhealthy foods.
B.Consume varieties of foods.
C.Count on the latest dietary advice.
D.Follow body signals sensibly.

While we race into a future where we outsource most of our problem-solving to artificial intelligence, the greatest threat is not super intelligent machinery. It’s mindlessly putting too much trust in big tech and not enough trust in the power of our own minds.
A philosophy of artful thinking is a good way to avoid this. To think artfully means to solve problems using not just our brains, but also our hands, eyes, and ears, along with our emotions. This approach taps into the cognitive (认知的) resources that are spread throughout our bodies but often go unused.
Changing how we think is hard work. And it starts with a mindfulness practice. Accessing artful intelligence requires being mindful of how we think with our body, how we use our limbs (四肢), organs, and emotions to make sense of the world. Be mindful of all the different messages your body is sending you as well as the different roles and functions your bodily actions can play. For example, gesturing (做手势) in conversations is not just communicative. These movements often help the speaker to smooth out their thought process and assist in getting the words out.
Today, big tech is pushing a message of artificial intelligence craziness and fear. What makes you stuck in it? It’s seeing the same things wherever you look. Big tech gives you screens, hoping that your attention will always be attracted by their devices. If you want to find more freedom in this AI-filled world, improve your ability to mindfully shift your attention between different objects or levels of focus. Remember everything is born of a choice.
Artful thinking demands effortful mindfulness to ensure that what we do and what we hope to achieve by using these technological tools will not weaken our humanity. As Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Mindful living is an art, and each of us has to train to be an artist.”
( )32.What can we learn about artful thinking?
A.It simplifies problem-solving.
B.It focuses on developing our brains.
C.It prevents us from over-relying on AI.
D.It helps promote high-tech machinery.
( )33.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Benefits of artful intelligence.
B.Mind-body awareness in thinking.
C.Significance of being mindful.
D.Social interaction through movements.
( )34.What does the author suggest we do in the AI-filled world?
A.Enhance the flexibility of attention.
B.Adapt to the rise of AI.
C.Avoid the interruptions from big tech.
D.Improve the levels of focus.
( )35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Artful thinking advances big tech
B.Too much trust in AI harms our minds
C.Physical actions better cognitive functions
D.Mindfulness keeps us human in the age of AI

Many people use the term “culture shock” without really knowing what it means. It is not just the “strangeness” we feel when living overseas. 36. Here, I’d like to share how I worked through culture shock when I moved to Portugal.
Focus on similarities, not differences.
I realized that constantly comparing “here” to “there” only worsened my sense of separation. Humans naturally judge by comparison, but this mindset wasn’t helpful. Instead, I began looking for similarities between my old and new environments. 37. That, in turn, helped me to feel less like an outsider.
38.
When I felt mistreated or excluded, I reminded myself that it wasn’t always about me. People’s reactions could be a result of their own struggles or circumstances. By not taking these experiences personally, I freed myself from unnecessary emotional baggage and was able to focus on building genuine connections.
Avoid generalizations.
It’s easy to make generalizations when plans fail. For instance, after a bad experience, thinking “people here are always like that” builds unnecessary walls. 39. A person’s rudeness could just mean they’re having a bad day—not that their entire culture is a certain way. This mindset lowered my frustration and let me meet people with more empathy.
40. While I still experience moments of disconnection or discomfort, I now have the tools to handle them. The key is realizing that culture shock is normal and temporary, and that by taking proactive steps, you can minimize its impact.
A.Don’t take things personally.
B.Don’t blame others for their mistakes.
C.I learned to take each interaction by itself.
D.These strategies helped me to navigate culture shock more effectively.
E.Perhaps the hardest part was the sense that people treated me differently.
F.It represents a real and often challenging phase of cultural adjustment when moving abroad.
G.Shifting my focus in this way helped me to see the common humanity in people and experiences.

Clara walked alone in her new high school, watching the falling leaves dancing in the autumn wind. She had been struggling with the new school life. Clara used to be confident and outgoing. However, in this new school, she felt lost. She was afraid to speak in class and often doubted herself. She felt like one of those leaves—drifting aimlessly, unsure where she would land.
One Thursday, wanting to get away from the noisy cafeteria, Clara ended up in the quiet school library. Suddenly, a brightly coloured poster caught her eye: “Autumn Art & Poetry Contest—Share Your Story!” The theme was “Change”. Change was all she knew lately. Maybe she could write about it.
That evening, instead of watching TV, Clara began to write, not about her sadness, but about the journey of a single leaf—how it bravely let go of its branch, trusted the wind, and eventually found a new purpose enriching the earth. The words flowed more easily than she had expected.
The next day, her heart beating fast, she handed in her poem. A week later, to her surprise, her name was announced as one of the winners. Her poem would be displayed in the main hallway alongside selected artworks.
On the day of the display, Clara stood nervously before her posted poem. A girl with friendly eyes stopped to read it. “Beautiful,” the girl said, smiling. “I love how you saw hope in letting go. I’m Maya. I did one of the paintings.” She pointed to a lively painting of a tree shedding golden leaves against a bright blue sky.
Clara smiled back, a real smile for the first time in weeks. “I’m Clara. Your painting feels exactly like how I wanted my poem to feel.”
Maya’s eyes lit up. “The art club is looking for someone who thinks like that! We’re designing the stage for the winter play. Would you like to help?”
Paragraph 1:
Clara hesitated for only a moment before nodding.

Text 1
M: What do you usually do in your spare time?
W: I spend most of my spare time listening to rock music. And you?
M: I love to collect stamps and take photos. I have put up many pictures on my bedroom wall.
Text 2
M: I love our apple tree. It’s been there for years. I wonder how old it is.
W: Well, grandad told me that his father planted it when he was a kid. So, pretty old!
M: I wonder if our dad used to play in it when he was small!
Text 3
M: Sit down, please, Kate. You’ve won the school poetry competition. There’s a prize for you. Congratulations! I will give you the prize in front of your class.
W: Thank you, Mr Smith.
Text 4
W: National Bank, can I help you?
M: Yes, please. What are your business hours?
W: We open at 9 and close at 4 during the week. On Saturday we close one hour earlier at 3 and we’re closed on Sunday.
Text 5
W: Make sure to feed Charlie. Don’t worry about taking him out again. He does not like to go out in the rain, because he pulled the whole time and then rolled around everywhere when we got back.
M: Exactly, he hates rain.
Text 6
M: We’re going away for the weekend. We’re renting a nice little house in the forest.
W: That sounds very relaxing. I’d love to get out of the city for a few days.
M: You should just go on a holiday somewhere.
W: I would, but I’ve got no one to go with, and I’m too scared to travel on my own.
M: I used to travel alone a lot before I met Jennifer. It’s not as scary as you think.
W: I’ll think about it. I just want to lie on a beach and read a good book.
Text 7
M: Hi Nancy, you look worried. What’s wrong?
W: Well, Daniel, I have to give a speech at the school art festival next week. I’m so nervous. Have you ever felt stressed on stage?
M: Oh, yes. I once froze during a spelling competition last term—I even forgot simple words. Don’t worry. We can practise together in the school hall after class, okay?
W: That would be awesome! But what if I still feel nervous up there? I’m scared I can’t remember anything.
M: Take it easy. I’ll teach you a breathing exercise. It can help you calm down when stressed.
W: Thanks, Daniel. You’re such a lifesaver.
Text 8
M: Let’s divide up the tasks.
W: OK. John, you’re good at socializing so maybe you can make the guest list.
M: No problem. I also enjoy online marketing tasks, so leave it to me. And Edward knows some really good musicians that do events like this one. He can be on organizing the musicians.
W: Nice. I’ve got experience in graphic design so I’m happy to design the invitations.
M: Great. Do you mind designing the posters too? I don’t think any other of us is good at designing.
W: Sure, it’ll be fun. The invitations are more important so I guess I’ll design them first. But who will be in charge of sending them out?
M: Since I’m making the guest list, I should send out the invitations, too.
W: Great. Nancy’s brother Tim works in the Paramount Hotel, so I think she is the best person to do the room reservations.
M: Isn’t she taking care of her mother at the hospital these days?
W: Oh, her mother is recovered now. Nancy just called and said she was on the train back.
Text 9
M: So here we go, I’ll tell you all the things you need to know. My son Rick is usually pretty quiet. He loves playing computer games, but my wife and I don’t allow him to play for too long. When he finishes his homework, please give him a glass of milk and some cookies. The cookies are on the top shelf of the cupboard.
W: Okay. What about little Daisy?
M: She is younger and more active. She’s crazy about dolls and can play with them for hours. She loves singing, so don’t be surprised if she asks you to watch her performance.
W: Ha-ha, lovely. What about dinner?
M: It’s in the refrigerator. You should heat it up and give it to them around 7:00 pm. Put the dirty dishes in the dishwasher when they’re done. Don’t be shy, Linette. If you’re hungry, just help yourself.
W: Thanks. I already had my dinner. What about their bedtime?
M: As for Daisy, she must go to bed before 9:00 pm. Rick can stay up for another half an hour. Oh, one more thing, please don’t leave the house until I return.
W: Got it. Have a nice evening, Mr Cells.
M: Thank you. I should be back from work by midnight.

通读全文可知,文中多次出现your students以及field trip等教学相关词汇,再结合第一段“While outdoor field studies can happen throughout the year we hope this month’s ‘Growing Healthy Schools’ theme inspires you to plan something special that will connect your students to the world around them.” 故选A项。
根据Explore your neighbourhood中的“See the environmental features of the district’s neighbourhoods through the eyes of a landscape architect by going on a self-guided walking tour developed by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).”[通过参加由美国景观设计师协会(ASLA)开发的自助徒步旅行,以及景观设计师的眼睛来了解该地区社区的环境特征。]
根据Go fishing中的“Take a tour of the Aquatic Resources Education Centre, where you can also schedule a fishing activity for your students. For more information, contact Teresa Rodriguez by e-mailing Teresa.Rodriguez@ dc.gov.”(参观一下水产资源教育中心,在那里你还可以为你的学生安排钓鱼活动。欲了解更多信息,请发电子邮件到Teresa.Rodriguez@ dc.gov联系Teresa Rodriguez。)可知,Teresa Rodriguez可以帮助安排钓鱼活动。故选A项。

根据第二段“Blackwell’s work earned him the CNN Hero of the Year award at the 19th edition of the honour, organized by the cable news outlet with support from corporate sponsors.”
根据第三段“Blackwell believed that flowers might be the answer to reconnecting Englewood youth to nature, while at the same time growing something meaningful in between boarded-up shops, abandoned buildings and empty lots.”
根据第五段“A lot of the most beautiful flowers we grow do very well in adverse conditions, and that’s just like the people here…”及“‘As long as they’re getting all of the ingredients they need to be successful, there’s nothing that they can’t do,’ he said.‘Our young people are blossoming every single day.’” 故选A。
根据最后一段“Holding the CNN Hero award in his arms, what Blackwell was keen to communicate was the strength and character of his team: his wife, and the young men and women who make the project possible.” 故选A。
C
根据第一段中的“Huge piles of researches on diet are published annually. The most shocking of these get reported in the media. All claim to be based on the latest research and each claims to prove the last study wrong.”
根据第二段中的“Misleading media coverage plays a role, but publication bias (偏见) is one major source: studies that show surprising results are more likely to get published.”可知,媒体偏好报道带有新奇或反直觉结果的研究,结合下文的“‘What you see published in the nightly news is the end result of a system where everyone is encouraged to come up with a positive result,’ says Vinay at Oregon Health & Science University.” 故选A项。
根据第五段中的“While admittedly simple advice, it removes the pressure to constantly run after the latest amazing diet or fear seemingly harmful foods. Within reason, trusting your stomach is mostly fine.”
根据第二段中“To think artfully means to solve problems using not just our brains, but also our hands, eyes, and ears, along with our emotions. This approach taps into the cognitive (认知的) resources that are spread throughout our bodies but often go unused.”
根据第三段中“Changing how we think is hard work. And it starts with a mindfulness practice. Accessing artful intelligence requires being mindful of how we think with our body, how we use our limbs (四肢), organs, and emotions to make sense of the world.”(改变我们的思维方式是一项艰苦的工作。
根据第四段中“If you want to find more freedom in this AI-filled world, improve your ability to mindfully shift your attention between different objects or levels of focus.”(如果你想在这个充满人工智能的世界中找到更多的自由,提高你自觉地在不同物体或注意力层次之间转移注意力的能力。) 故选A。
根据最后一段“Artful thinking demands effortful mindfulness to ensure that what we do and what we hope to achieve by using these technological tools will not weaken our humanity. As Thich Nhat Hanh said, ‘Mindful living is an art, and each of us has to train to be an artist.’”

39.C 上文“It’s easy to make generalizations when plans fail. For instance, after a bad experience, thinking ‘people here are always like that’ builds unnecessary walls.”说明以偏概全的危害,下文“A person’s rudeness could just mean they’re having a bad day—not that their entire culture is a certain way. This mindset lowered my frustration and let me meet people with more empathy.”
40.D 下文“While I still experience moments of disconnection or discomfort, I now have the tools to handle them. The key is realizing that culture shock is normal and temporary, and that by taking proactive steps, you can minimize its impact.”(虽然我仍然会经历一些脱节或不适的时刻,但我现在有了应对它们的工具。

Dear Leo,
Knowing you are in a dilemma about choosing a club, I’m writing to highly recommend the Chinese Cuisine Club.
First of all, it offers you a hands-on opportunity to learn how to cook Chinese classic dishes, such as dumplings and Mapo Tofu. Moreover, it’s also a fun way for you to experience the authentic Chinese culture behind the flavours.
To apply, please visit the Student Activity Centre to collect an application form, fill in your personal information and reasons for joining the club, and submit it by this Friday. Additionally, attaching a brief self-introduction and a short motivation essay would be extremely beneficial.
I hope you’ll have a great time!

One possible version:
Clara hesitated for only a moment before nodding. She followed Maya to the art club room. Maya introduced her to the other members. At first, Clara kept quiet. But when Maya asked for her opinion on the stage background(时间状语从句), she summoned up her courage to speak, sharing how the poem’s leaf theme could blend with the winter play’s warmth(现在分词作状语+宾语从句). To her surprise, everyone agreed eagerly. Day by day, she opened up more, laughing with the club members as they painted and designed(现在分词作状语+时间状语从句).
Days later, Clara stood by the window, watching leaves fall once again. But this time, she felt no sadness. The autumn wind still blew, but the leaves now seemed not aimless, but brave. She had found her place in the new school, thanks to Maya’s kindness. She touched the pocket where she kept a copy of her poem(定语从句), smiling softly(现在分词作伴随状语). As a leaf landed gently on the windowsill(时间状语从句), Clara knew: letting go of fear and embracing change was the best way to find where she belonged(宾语从句).
