The rise of the Internet has been one of the most influential developments in human history, comparable in effect to the invention of the printing press and the telegraph (电报). Over two billion people worldwide now have access to more information than ever before, and can communicate with each other whenever they want, often using Web-connected mobile phones they carry everywhere. But the Internet’s huge influence has only just begun.
“Mass use of the Internet is driving one of the most exciting social, cultural, and political changes in history, and unlike earlier periods of change, this time the effects are fully global,” Schmidt and Cohen write in their new book The New Digital Age.
Perhaps the most far-reaching changes will come when the five billion people worldwide who currently have no access to the Internet get online. The authors do an excellent job of examining the possible results of the Internet invention for individuals, governments, and institutions like the news media. But if the book has one major shortcoming, it’s that authors don’t spend enough time applying a critical eye to the role of Internet businesses in these sweeping changes.
At the centre of the book is the idea that “technology is impartial, but people aren’t”. By using this idea as a starting point, the authors aim to move beyond the now familiar optimist vs pessimist dichotomy (二分法) that has characterized many recent debates about whether the rise of the Internet will finally be good or bad for society. In an interview with TIME earlier this week, Cohen said although he and his co-author are optimistic about many aspects of the Internet, they are also realistic about the risks and dangers that lie ahead when the next five billion people come online, particularly with respect to personal privacy and state monitoring.
( )1.Why does the author compare the Internet with the printing press and the telegraph?
A.To present the development of technology.
B.To show the creativity of human beings.
C.To prove the efforts made by human beings.
D.To stress the great influence of the Internet.
( )2.What are the effects of the mass use of the Internet according to Paragraph 2?
A.They are immeasurable.
B.They are uncontrollable.
C.They are worldwide.
D.They are disastrous.
( )3.What is the major weakness of the book?
A.It doesn’t recognize the influence of the Internet businesses.
B.It fails to look at the role of Internet businesses fully and objectively.
C.It lacks all-round monitoring on the sweeping changes.
D.It doesn’t cover the risks and dangers that lie ahead.
( )4.What do we know about the authors of The New Digital Age?
A.They leave many questions unanswered.
B.They are optimistic about the future of the Internet.
C.They are not aware of the risks and dangers of the Internet.
D.They don’t take sides in examining the effects of the Internet.
Expressive writing is a cornerstone of wellness and writing connections. If you are not familiar with it, you may be asking:“Just what is expressive writing, and how is that related to my wellness?”
Expressive writing is personal and emotional writing without regard to form or other writing conventions. 1. It is one common tool used by psychologists in therapy and hundreds of studies found that it could be healing in many circumstances such as for cancer patients or those with disabilities.
Expressive writing therapy works because it allows you to make meaning out of a painful experience, experts say. Recognizing that something is bothering you is an important first step. 2. And creating a narrative gives you a sense of control.
What if you don’t consider yourself“a writer”? Don’t worry about spelling or grammar, and don’t share your writing with anyone. But do dig deep into your thoughts and feelings. 3.
Yanatha Desouvre, who teaches entrepreneurship at a college in Miami, took up expressive writing about 15 years ago, after the break-up of what he said was an unhealthy relationship. He wrote to understand why it made him feel vulnerable (脆弱的) and sometimes physically ill. He thinks of his expressive writing as a captain’s log. 4. “My expressive writing gave me the courage to face my fears,” Desouvre says. “And I believe it has helped me discover the hope I need to heal.”
5. Expressive writing isn’t a magical cure-all. It shouldn’t be used as a replacement for other treatments. And people coping with severe depression may not find it useful to do on their own, without therapy.
A.But there are a few warnings.
B.Your goal is to be honest with yourself.
C.It is a record of what happened and what he’s learned.
D.It simply expresses what is on your mind and in your heart.
E.Spending minutes writing down your feelings improves your health.
F.The topic can be anything as long as the writing expresses personal thoughts.
G.Translating that experience into language forces you to organize your thoughts.

1.正反双方观点;

Dear Leah,
I’m writing to share with you a debate I had in class last Tuesday.

“Surprise!” was the first thing I heard when I opened the door. My family and friends were all smiling at me. There were colourful balloons all over the house, a big poster saying “HAPPY BIRTHDAY”, and of course a cake with 12 candles. It was a wonderful feeling. I knew that I had finally turned twelve and I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mum and dad coming towards me with a small box which seemed to be a birthday present. When I opened the box, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had really gotten a mobile phone! Throwing myself into their arms, I let out a cry of joy, “Thank you! I love you guys!”
“You’re welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy but we got you this not only because you turn twelve, but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades.”
“Of course I will,” I said confidently.
As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts on the first day.
It felt like I didn’t even exist in that class anymore. I wouldn’t pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy with my phone. However, I didn’t get caught using it.
I was pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her because a week later we took a test and I failed. What was worse, my mum had to sign the test.
It was hard to show my mum the test. She was used to seeing A’s and B’s on my tests. Finally, I showed it to her, and she couldn’t believe it. She was angry but most of all, she was disappointed.
Paragraph 1:
Realizing the reason for my failure, my parents started to dislike the fact that I had a phone.
Paragraph 2:
Then I started to wonder if I was wrong.

Ⅷ.第一节
One possible version:
Dear Leah,
I’m writing to share with you a debate I had in class last Tuesday. At present, Internet slang has become popular among the teenagers.
There are different opinions on Internet slang. Some students think Internet slang is vivid, fashionable and full of humour and intelligence. Besides, it makes chatting on the Internet quicker. However, some other students think Internet slang lacks depth of thought and is too simple. Also, it is hard to understand and not accepted by most people. The words sometimes might make people confused, even resulting in misunderstanding.
Every coin has two sides. In my opinion, living in the Information Age, if we don’t know the Internet slang, we seem to fall behind the times. It will be OK as long as these terms are used correctly in proper situations.
Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
Realizing the reason for my failure, my parents started to dislike the fact that I had a phone. They said they had noticed that I never paid attention to them (宾语从句). It was like I had my own little world. They thought we didn’t communicate as much with my phone. So they regretted having given me a phone, which made me ignore the family and study
Then I started to wonder if I was wrong. A week later I tried going a whole day without a phone and it didn’t go that badly. I had so much fun because I was actually spending time with my family and keeping them company From that day, I had a different opinion towards phones. Phones really take you away from the rest of the world. I’m not saying that phones are bad and that you should not use them, but you do have to spare some time to spend with your family and not get stuck with (固定搭配:陷入) your phone all day.
