(25-26高二上·吉林地区普通高中友好学校联合体·期中)I was 11 when I asked my mum for piano lessons. We were in an economic crisis and she’d recently been laid off. She said a polite “no”.
That didn’t 1 me. I drew a keyboard onto a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would 2 notes on an online keyboard and “play” them back on my paper one — keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head. I spent six months playing without 3 a real piano. As my mum found I was 4 about it, she bought me 10 lessons with borrowed money.
I still remember the first one. I was 5 by how organic the sound of the piano was, as I had become familiar with the 6 electronic sound. The teacher was trying to explain where middle C was, but I could 7 play all the major and minor scales.
I sat my grade one after eight lessons and got distinction. By the time I started secondary school, we couldn’t 8 lessons again, so I returned to my paper keyboard. I passed grade three, then grade five, practising only on my piece of paper.
For the grades above that, there was an expectation that you add a certain sensitivity into your playing. The music teacher at my school said I could practise on the school’s grand piano. I would wake up at 5:30 am to get there in time and play until lessons started. I’d 9 lunch and then practise after school until the caretaker kicked me out. At home, I’d have dinner, do three hours of revision, and then 10 practice until 1:00 am.
My school didn’t offer music A-level. I found the Purcell School for young musicians. The audition (试镜)was extremely challenging and I felt overwhelmed. To my amazement, I was offered a 11 .
I had been told I had started playing too 12 to reach conservatoire (音乐学院)level but when I left Purcell, I was awarded the senior piano prize. That was the point when I realized I wasn’t behind everyone else. I am now at the Guildhall School in London, where I was offered a scholarship. I feel 13 : it’s been 10 years since I drew my paper piano and I'm at one of the world’s 14 conservatoires.
The irony is that I continue to do a lot of my practice away from the piano: what we call mental practice. It unlocks key areas of the mind that are less readily accessed by piano playing alone. The paper piano helped stimulate my 15 about how music works.

(25-26高二上·黑龙江龙东十校联盟·期中)How do we assess what makes a good conversation? Is it by how many times we laugh? Or is it 1 by how we feel afterwards — how deeply the words have 2 us? There is one conversation where I can 3 almost word-for-word in my head. These words have even 4 the course of my life.
In 2016, I walked into a small valley in Jordan. A young boy called Faisal saw me kicking football with some kids and 5 me.

(25-26高二上·内蒙古乌兰察布·期中)Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One time, I was called to pick someone up at 2:30 am. When I arrived, the building was dark except for one light on the ground floor.
I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute,” answered a frail, elderly voice. After a long 1 , the door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me. By her side was a big suitcase. “Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. I took the suitcase and then returned to 2 her to the car. She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing,” I told her, “I just try to 3 my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.” “Oh, you’re such a good boy,” she said. When we got in the taxi, she gave me an address and then asked, “Could you drive 4 the downtown?” “It’s not the shortest way,” I answered 5 . “Oh, I don’t mind,” she said, “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice (临终安养院).” I saw her eyes shining with 6 . “I don’t have any family left,” she continued, “The doctor says I don’t have very long.”
I quietly reached over and 7 the meter. “What road would you like me to take?” I asked. For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once 8 as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were first married. Sometimes she asked me to slow down in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the 9 , saying nothing.
As the sun was 10 , she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.” We drove in 11 to the address she had given me. Two nurses were waiting as we pulled up. They helped her into a wheelchair. “How much do I owe you?” she asked, 12 for her purse. “Nothing,” I said. “You have to make a living,” she answered. “There are other passengers.” I 13 .Without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She hugged me tightly. “You gave an old woman a little moment of 14 ,” she said, “Thank you.” I squeezed her hand and then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.
