The Quiet Scientist Who Saved Millions of Lives
In the 1960s, malaria(疟疾)was one of the world’s most dangerous diseases. Millions of people fell ill every year, and many died. Worse still, some old medicines were no longer working. Scientists were racing against time to find new ways to fight the disease.
At that time, Tu Youyou, a young researcher in Beijing, joined a national project to develop an anti-malaria drug. In 1969, she became the head of the research group. She believed that ancient Chinese medical texts might hold the answer, so her team read over 2,000 ancient medical texts(古代医籍)and studied hundreds of plants. One day, Tu Youyou found an important sentence in a book written in the fourth century. It said that sweet wormwood(青蒿)could be used to treat a fever. The team tried to use it, but the first experiments failed. Tu Youyou did not give up. She studied the old text again and realized that high temperatures might have destroyed the useful part of the plant. By using a lower temperature, her team finally got a substance(物质)that worked. After more than 190 failures, they succeeded in 1971.
To make sure the medicine was safe, Tu Youyou and two of her teammates tested it on themselves first. Later, it was used on malaria patients, and most of them recovered. The medicine, called artemisinin(青蒿素), soon became a standard treatment for malaria. According to the World Health Organization, the malaria death rate fell by about 60% between 2000 and 2015, and millions of lives were saved.
In 2015, Tu Youyou won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She was the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel Prize in science. In 2019, BBC even shortlisted her as one of the four greatest scientists of the 20th century, together with Marie Curie, Albert Einstein and Alan Turing. When she received the prize, she said, “The honour is not just mine. There is a team behind me, and all the people of my country.”
16. Why did scientists in the 1960s have to find new medicines?
A. Because malaria was spreading to new countries.
B. Because some old medicines were no longer useful.
C. Because there were too many sick people.
D. Because a new kind of malaria appeared.
17. What made Tu Youyou’s team finally succeed?
A. Reading more ancient books.
B. Asking patients for help.
C. Testing the medicine on themselves.
D. Using a lower temperature to treat the plant.
18. What does the underlined word “standard” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Widely used. B. Very cheap. C. Easy to make.D. Perfectly safe.
19. Why does the writer mention the number “60%” in Paragraph 3?
A. To show how hard the research was.
B. To tell readers malaria is still dangerous.
C. To prove artemisinin has saved many lives.
D. To compare the two kinds of medicines.
20. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Dangerous Disease Called Malaria
B. How to Read Ancient Chinese Books
C. The History of the Nobel Prize
D. A Quiet Scientist Who Never Gave Up

What makes a person admirable? Ask ten people, and you may get ten different answers. Some may say courage, some may say wisdom, and others may say kindness. 21______ But most people would agree on one thing: admirable people do not do great things for themselves, but for others.
Many of us look up to famous people. Scientists who spend their whole lives on one question, doctors who save patients day and night, and teachers who light up their students’ future — these people win our respect. 22______ They show us what a person can achieve with hard work and a strong will.
However, heroes do not have to be famous. 23______ A father who works two jobs to support his family, a classmate who quietly helps others, or a neighbour who looks after the old people on his street — they may never appear on the news, but their everyday choices make the world warmer.
What, then, is the secret of an admirable person? First, they are honest with themselves and others. Second, they are brave enough to do what they believe is right, even when it is hard. 24_____ They may fail many times, but they stand up and try again.
Most importantly, admiring someone does not mean copying them. 25______ If a great person’s story touches your heart, let it encourage you to become a better person yourself. In this way, their light lives on in you — and that is the true power of inspiration.
A. Their stories are like lamps that light our way.
B. Admirable people are always patient with others.
C. It means learning from them and growing in your own way.
D. The people around us can also be our heroes.
E. There is one more thing: they never give up easily.
F. We admire them for what they have done for the world.

The Person I Admire
Everyone has someone they look up to. The person I admire most is my mother, a nurse who works in a small hospital.
My mother is kind and brave. During the flood last summer, she stayed at the hospital for three days to take care of the sick, although she was very tired herself. She is also patient with everyone. When I fail an exam, she never gets angry. Instead, she sits with me and helps me find out the reasons. It is her encouragement that keeps me going.
Her words and actions have taught me that a person becomes admirable not by being famous, but by doing small things well for others. I hope to be a person like her one day.
