Passage 1
(24-25九上·重庆南川区三校联盟·期中)
Every Friday I went to a senior nursing home. It seemed as if it needed 121 , but little did I know it would help me too.
During my first visit I helped to polish (擦光) some ladies’ nails (指甲). One woman asked me many questions. After she was satisfied with my 122 , she started to share some of her hidden 123 . By listening to her, I realized I had helped her a lot: She looked relaxed from some of her past pains.
When she was finished, she told me something that 124 me to visit the nursing home every week. She said, “You’re the only person I was able to tell this to. The other volunteers are too busy to 125 me. You’ll come back next week, right?” After gently blowing on her newly coated nails, I smiled and 126 , “Yes, I’ll see you next Friday.”
That day, I was glad about the fact that I had helped somebody. I realized an action as simple as listening became something much more.
During every second I spent there, I realized how much of a difference my 127 could have on the lives of others. The hardest part of living there is that it breaks the human 128 between those in today’s society and the nursing home.
Every moment I spend chatting is a chance to 129 that connection again, to share their worries, and to shape someone’s life. In return, that moment also shapes me. I not only learn about life and experiences outside of school, but also receive the 130 of being part of this process—this connection between humans.

For example, when I need to stay at home alone, they will 132 me and my life without them. Most parents always think that they have offered the best things they can to make their children live in a comfortable world. In fact, they want a true family. What does a true family mean? I think it means a place where we can hide (躲藏) ourselves from the 137 world outside. From here, we can get warmth. We can get consolation (安慰) and happiness. We should be stronger and more confident in the outside world because we have a true family.

I used to be good at hiding. My phone was my best protection, helping me hide from the noisy world. At family dinners, I would always disappear into my screen. My world was safe, 161 and digital.
My parents noticed I spent too much time on my phone. To punish me, they 162 my phone and sent me to help my grandfather clean his garage (车库). I thought it would be the most boring weekend of my life.
When I walked into the old garage, I found 163 was filled with forgotten memories. “What’s that?” I asked curiously. 164 one corner of the garage stood a large, dark slate (石板) covered with dust.
Grandpa said, “This used to be my screen. When I was young, my family was too poor to buy toys for me. With no other toys available, this slate became my 165 toy. I drew pictures and practiced writing on it. When the surface was full, I would clean it off and start again. I didn’t have countless apps,” he continued, with his eyes 166 . “But I had endless imagination.” His words touched me deeply. This ordinary object had once been a doorway to his other worlds.
Seeing my interest, Grandpa said, “On this slate, you’re allowed to draw anything you can imagine. Would you like to have a try?” I found a piece of chalk and drew a shaky flower. My hand was moving 167 so that the lines (线条) would not break. At this moment, time seemed to stop. Although the slate 168 hard and cold under my fingers, somehow my heart was full and warm.
169 the slate changed from gray to colorful in our hands, I found a new connection — the one that came from sharing time and laughter with my grandpa. I finally learned that sometimes the most important “ 170 ” is not the one you hold in your hand, but the one you build in your mind.
