Toronto’s Paradise Theater is a “nabe,” a neighborhood movie theater built in 1937. There used to be one every few blocks. While most of the nabes are gone now, the Paradise has been lovingly restored, and after it reopened recently, it showed the new Martin Scorsese film, “The Irishman,” a Netflix production my wife and I wanted to see. My wife is a true movie lover, and there was no way she was going to watch this on a small home screen. Kelly wasn’t sure whether she wanted to even see it at the Paradise when it was playing downtown on the big Toronto International Film Festival theater screen, but I convinced her that we should walk down and try out our new nabe.
The whole concept of a pair of baby boomers going out to pay to see a Netflix movie on a not-so-big screen in a newly restored single-screen theater at the end of 2019 raises questions.
Will the Paradise be a great money maker? “Probably not. But I think we can make it an interesting place to go for the community,” said investor Moray Tawse who bought the Paradise in 2013 and rebuilt it as a comfortable theater, with a restaurant and a bar.
Another question: Does the movie theater actually have a future? Canada’s Cineplex chain was founded in 1979 with North America’s first multiplex (多厅影院). My dad was an early investor, so I got a lot of passes every year and saw a lot of movies as it took over Odeon and other theater chains in Canada and the U.S. and grew to 1,880 screens in the two countries.
Yet just last week it was sold to a big British chain, after trying everything — gaming, high-tech amusements, etc., to keep people in seats. Traffic to movie theaters has been reportedly slowing everywhere, and at Cineplex, attendance has fallen for the past three years, but the new owner of the company is optimistic, saying “The theatrical business is not home entertainment. People will never stay seven days at home. We are competing for their free time outside of the house.”
That’s wishful thinking. TV technology killed the nabes 50 years ago, and the new technologies are going to do the same to the movie theater. Even “Ironman” can’t save it.
71. What is indicated about nabes in the first paragraph?
A. They are setting a new trend. B. The business had boom years.
C. Most of them need restoration now. D. Some have evolved into big movie theaters.
72. How did Kelly watch “The Irishman”?
A. At the Paradise with her husband.
B. On the small home screen with her husband.
C. On the Toronto International Film Festival theater screen alone.
D. At a new big-screen theater of a big chain alone.
73. The purpose of the newly restored Paradise is probably to ________.
A. bring back the good old days B. make a big profit
C. entertain the community D. support local charity
74. What can we learn about the author?
A. He was once crazy about movies.
B. He must have very good taste in movies.
C. He had his father to thank for his rich theater experiences.
D. His theater experiences contributed to his father’s career.
75. We can infer from the passage that Cineplex ________.
A. has completed a successful transformation
B. is trying to enter the home entertainment market
C. once took the lead regionally, expanded and then declined
D. is run by its British owner in partnership with Canadian investors

A. Optimistic. B. Negative. C. Curious. D. Unconcerned.
C
A team of researchers in the UK has shown that although the social background has a noticeable effect on a child’s readiness for school, what parents do with their children, even before they begin to talk, is actually much more important. The result showed that children who were taken to the library more often and owned more books at two years old achieved higher scores on the school assessment tests when they began primary school. The research also showed that attending pre-school and having parents who taught them a wide range of activities had a positive effect — while extended exposure to television lowered their scores.
“One message coming through loud and clear is that how a child learns in their very early years is critical for smooth transition into the educational system,” said Professor James Law. “This is a very positive message as it gets us away from the belief that a child’s educational future is pre-determined by standard measures such as income, housing or the mother’s education.”
Data from the study showed that children with a positive communication environment had a better expressive vocabulary by their second birthday. These children went on to achieve higher scores in language, reading and math tests when they entered school. In the early years, the communication environment was a better predictor of children’s success with language than their general social backgrounds.
Most children develop speech and language effortlessly, but some are slow to acquire these skills and go on to struggle with literacy and academic skills throughout their schooling. This project set out to uncover what factors contributed to these problems.
Professor Sue Roulstone said, “These findings are an encouragement to all parents to provide a positive communication environment for their children from the very start of their lives. And the better our children are at talking by the age of two, the better they will do when they start school.”
77. From the research Professor James Law made a conclusion that ________.
A. communicating with kids when they are older is more effective
B. a kid’s educational future is decided by his parents’ social status
C. kids can naturally make smooth transition into the educational system
D. the very early years had a big effect on children’s school performance
78. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. Children can express themselves clearly by two.
B. How children can do well in language, reading and math.
C. A positive communication environment is important for kids’ success with language.
D. A positive communication environment plays a decisive role in kids’ success.
79. What is implied in the passage?
A. The research may help kids who suffer learning disability.
B. Parents should take their kids to school as early as possible.
C. Teachers should teach kids how to communicate with parents.
D. Kids who have good language ability won’t develop learning disability.
80. According to Professor Sue Roulstone, ________.
A. parents should buy more complex books for kids
B. the findings will change the way teachers educate kids
C. parents should provide kids with broad communication experiences
D. a kid’s early communication environment is more important than schooling
D
A study that examined adult and seedling plants in the “ecological desert” of gypsum soil — a very poor soil — in the south-east of Spain found that mature plants helped smaller ones survive and were more successful themselves.
“What we have found, which is surprising, is that an established large plant, called a ‘nurse’, protects a seedling. It also produces more flowers than the same plants of similar large sizes growing on their own,” said Dr Perez-Barrales, the lead author.
“Scientists have often looked at such plant relationships and found an adult or a seedling at one stage of its life, and made conclusions,” Dr Perez-Barrales said. “But by studying these plants’ entire lifetime, we have evidence that the benefits for both increase over time.”
The seedling benefited from shade, more water and more nutrients, from the leaf litter of the “nurse” plant, and probably higher bacteria and fungi in the soil, among other things. As it matured, the “nurse” plant grew more flowers than similar plants nearby growing alone, greatly increasing its chances of producing seeds and reproducing.
The nurse-seedling partnership can also lead to other benefits. For example, vegetable lands with nurse and sheltered plants with more flowers might be able to attract greater numbers and diversity of pollinators in an area, in turn supporting insect and soil life, and even provide a greater range of different fruit types for birds and mammals. “The biggest winner for this system of nursing a plant is biodiversity,” Dr Perez-Barrales said. “The greater the biodiversity of an area is, the greater number of species of plants, insect life, bacteria, fungi, mammals and birds we have, and the better the chances are of the long-term healthy functioning of the environment and ecosystems.”
The research is likely to be of value to those who manage and protect plants in hostile environments. Most home gardeners and arable (可耕的) land farmers plan to ensure their soil and conditions are the best they can be for the best plant growth, but the findings might be of more value to those who garden in places that are difficult to live in. Dr Perez-Barrales suggested the former experiment with planting different species of different ages together to test which partnerships help plants grow successfully in a particular location.
81. What did the study find about plants in a hostile environment?
A. A win-win situation. B. Survival of the fittest.
C. Self-sacrifice of weak plants. D. Partnerships between strong plants.
82. What was special with regard to Dr Perez-Barrales’ study?
A. It studied how a plant was related to another.
B. It focused on a particular stage of a plant’s growth.
C. It observed plant relationships throughout plants’ lifetime.
D. It examined a particularly large quantity of wild plants.
83. What does Paragraph 5 indicate about the nurse-seedling partnership?
A. It will benefit plants more than animals.
B. It will take a long time to form such a relationship.
C. It may have a few unpredictable negative effects.
D. It may have broad and far-reaching environmental impacts.
84. Where might the findings be more useful according to the text?
A. In managing arable farmlands. B. In greening desert wastelands.
C. In protecting rare plants in rain-forests. D. In the reforestation of arable farmlands.
85. In terms of home gardeners and arable land farmers, Dr Perez-Barrales ________.
A. didn’t care about their conditions at all B. appealed for their involvement in her study
C. was eager to help them to improve production D. hoped they would find out their own planting models

Josh Katrick had just finished his eighth round of chemotherapy (化疗) for colon cancer (结肠癌) when he ran into a bit of luck. The 36-year-old found out that he won free pizza for an entire year from his local pizza shop in Northampton, Pennsylvania.
However, instead of celebrating his winnings and immediately running to get a slice of pizza, Katrick decided that other people in his community needed the food more. He gave every slice away. A local food bank has been the recipient of Katrick’s generosity.
He said that he was inspired to pay it forward this holiday season because of the generosity he received from others during his cancer treatment. “I met so many people and have been receiving so much — I felt I wanted to give back,” Katrick said. “The food bank are very thankful. They’re amazed by it. They will put it to good use.”
Katrick has been frequenting the pizza shop, Mario’s Pizza, since he was a child. He was one of 1,200 people to enter the competition. The winner would walk away with two large pizzas and soda every month for the next year. Katrick received an email from the shop telling him he won, and he replied asking if he could give the free pizza to Northampton Food Bank.
After learning what Katrick wanted to do with his winnings, the pizza shop decided to extend its own act of kindness. The shop decided to double the prize to make sure Katrick got his share of pizza, along with the food bank. “It’s better to give than receive, and especially during this time of year — Christmas,” Aiello, the owner of the pizza shop, said.
