The clock in the hall said twenty past four, and I did not believe it, so I checked the one on the phone as well. Nothing had been cleared away from the night before: the plates were still on the table and the bin bag was still by the door where I had left it. Outside, a single set of footsteps went past and did not come back. I put the kettle on, not because I wanted tea, but because it gave me something to wait for.
I did not notice the sun go down; I noticed that I could no longer read what was written on the box. A neighbour’s dog started up and then thought better of it. The road had gone the flat colour it goes at that end of the day, and the cars had their lights on. Nobody had rung the bell by the time it was properly dark, so I went and sat where I could see the gate.
The house had settled into its night noises, which I knew by heart: the boiler, the stairs, the small click the back door made in the wind. I had put the radio on low and then turned it off again. Somewhere between eleven and twelve I stopped looking at the phone. The room had got colder without my noticing, so I put my coat back on, indoors, in the middle of the night, and did not think that there was anything strange about it.
I had been awake long enough that the dark had stopped being dark and had become the ordinary colour of things. The cold was in the floor and had come up through the chair. Twice I stood up to do something and twice I sat down again without doing it. What I remember is not deciding anything. What I remember is the sky going from black to not quite black, and understanding that this would happen whether or not I had made up my mind.
The morning had the flat practical look it has when everyone has already been up for hours. Somebody was drilling in the building opposite, and had been for a while. The post came at half past ten, and there was nothing for me in it, and I looked anyway. I made a list of the things I would do, and then made it again in a different order. The list is still in the drawer.
