Forty minutes into the lesson, the rain had settled on the window and stopped being interesting. The heating pipes knocked twice and went quiet. I counted the tiles between my desk and the door, and then counted them again. Her seat was the only empty one, and everybody was being careful not to look at it. When the bell went, nobody moved for a moment. Then the noise started up, and the room filled with ordinary things again.
By seven the platform had emptied out, and the three of us who were left stood well apart from each other. The kiosk man had turned his light off but had not gone home. A train came through without stopping, and the wind of it went along the platform and lifted the litter. I looked at my watch again, though I had promised myself I would not. At eight I walked back up the steps, past the timetable, and did not look at it.
I stood in the doorway and did not turn the light on. The pot had boiled dry, and the smell of it had got into the curtains. Two plates were still out from the morning. I filled the kettle, set it down, and then stood by the sink waiting for it, which took a long time. Through the wall I could hear next door’s television. When the kettle finally went, I made the tea and did not drink it.
We had been walking up for two hours when the path forked. Neither way was marked, and neither of us had been this far before. The air had turned colder and smelled of wet wood, and somewhere below us a stream was going about its business. He chose the left fork without asking, and I followed. It was the wrong one. We knew that about ten minutes later, and neither of us said it out loud.
The village had no street lights, so the dark came in properly, all the way down to the ground. The fields had been cut, and there was nothing standing between us and the horizon. Smoke went up straight from a chimney two hills away. I could hear my own steps, and his, and nothing else at all. We walked the last mile without speaking, and it was not uncomfortable.
