T: What are they doing?
S: They are using sign language.
T: Yes! Sign language is a special way to talk without words.
The main idea of a text tells us what the text is about, and details further explain the main idea.
Identifying the main idea and details
What does the picture on the left say? It tells a story in American Sign Language (ASL): An apple is sitting on a desk, waiting for a cat to eat. This is how deaf children learn to sign the letters in ASL. A is like an apple, B is like a desk and C is like a cat.
Activity 1 Look at the pictures and read the text. Learn to identify the main idea
and details by using a chart.
Main idea: How do deaf children learn to _______ the letters in ASL?

Detail: A is like an apple.
Detail: B is like a desk.
Detail: C is like a _____.
cat
wait for sb to do sth
Activity 2 Read the text and complete the main idea and detail chart.
People with hearing problems can use sign language for communication. They spell out the letters one by one by using their fingers. This is called “fingerspelling”. They also use different expressions on their faces to say “hello”, “goodbye”, “please”, “thank you”, “yes” or “no”, etc. The expressions on the face and the body language are important in sign language. There are many different sign languages in the world because of the different cultures.

Making inferences
You can infer the meaning of a new word from the text clues around it. And prefixes and suffixes are also good clues to infer the meaning of a word.
The Core Strategy: The Three-Step Method
How to infer the meaning of a new word?
Step 1: Underline
Identify the unknown word and draw a line under it.
Step 2: Circle Clues
Scan the sentences immediately before and after the word.
Step 3: Infer Meaning
Combine the clues you found with your prior knowledge to make a logical guess.

The key to solving our problem is a simple yet effective strategy I call 'The Three-Step Method'. It's very straightforward. First, you find the new word and underline it. Second, you look closely at the sentences before and after it, and circle any clues that might help you understand it. Finally, you use those clues to make an educated guess about the word's meaning. The most important thing to remember is that this is not blind guessing; it's a logical process.

Let's put our three-step method into practice with an example. Look at this sentence: 'Meimei is singing an English song. She is reading the lyrics while singing.' First, we underline the new word, 'lyrics'. Next, we look for clues. The clues here are 'singing an English song' and 'reading while singing'. Using these clues, we can infer that 'lyrics' must be the words of the song she is singing. See? It's simple and logical!

Activity 2: Read the text. Circle the text clue for each word in the table and explain its meaning by using another word or phrase from the text.
Do you know that if you imitate how someone talks, you’ll understand what they say better? Imitating is a very useful skill. It can help you better comprehend the speech. To learn a new language, it’s best to copy the native speakers. And if you want to learn the language faster, don’t just copy how your partner talks. Try to use this imitation method and copy his body language as well. In this way, you’ll sound like a native very soon.
