The construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge started on 15 December 2009. It cost a total of 126.9 billion yuan and took nine years to be completed. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge connects Hong Kong on the east bank of the Pearl River Delta to Zhuhai and Macao on the west bank. The bridge covers a distance of 55 kilometres, making it the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world. The project has set many world records. The construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge started on 15 December 2009. It cost a total of 126.9 billion yuan and took nine years to be completed. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge connects Hong Kong on the east bank of the Pearl River Delta to Zhuhai and Macao on the west bank. The bridge covers a distance of 55 kilometres, making it the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world. The project has set many world records. It provides valuable construction experience for building such sea-crossing bridges in the future. The bridge includes a tunnel that is 6.7 kilometres long—the world’s deepest underwater tunnel.
A total of more than 400,000 tons of steel were used for the tunnel and the 22.9-kilometre bridge, which is enough to build 60 Eiffel Towers. The bridge was named one of the “seven wonders of the modern world”.
The bridge was designed to withstand strong earthquakes and super typhoons. Before the construction of the bridge, it took more than 3 hours to drive from Hong Kong to Zhuhai and Macao.
