第二部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2.5分,满分50分)

Michael Jordan is arguably the best player to ever grace the game of basketball. His leadership on the court can be translated and used effectively in the workplace. Here are five lessons from Jordan that are typical of what leaders need to do to win:
1. Adjust to adversity
Jordan as a competitor was known for his tireless work ethic and willingness to make adjustments to triumph over opponents. As a leader, you have to make adjustments and learn how to overcome a setback. It’s important to understand the challenge, dissect it and figure out what tools and methods are needed to overcome the roadblock.
2. Work together
As Jordan says, “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.” Early in Jordan’s career, he tried to do everything by himself, and while he would accomplish great personal results, it did not materialize into the elusive (难以捕获的) championship. The individual contributor versus teamwork mindset also applies to business: to be successful, you have to work together as a team — intelligently — to achieve your goal. A talented individual can only do so much. It’s the team that gets it done.
3. Believe in yourself
Michael Jordan had belief in his abilities and unshakeable confidence in accomplishing his goals. Leadership requires enduring confidence and understanding of who you are. This means being reflective and knowing your strengths as well as your weaknesses.
4. Do your best
Michael Jordan’s commitment to trying to win was unquestionable. But great leaders must have drive and be willing to endure losses in pursuit of wins. Leadership calls for doing your best and accepting that failure is part of the process. High performing teams need psychological safety, and that cannot be achieved if your team fears failure and doesn’t take risks. In Jordan’s words: “I can accept failure, but I can’t accept not trying.”
5. Learn from your mistakes
“Learning is a gift, and even pain is your teacher,” Jordan says. There is always a lesson that is instructive for the future. Those learned mistakes allow for gradual improvements.
At the end of the day, leadership is a responsibility that is demonstrated not only in words, but by doing.
36. What does the passage stress about overcoming difficulties?
A. Leaders should analyze difficulties and find solutions actively.
B. Leaders should only depend on their work ethic to win.
C. Adjusting to opponents is the best way to avoid setbacks.
D. Roadblocks are unnecessary for successful leadership.
37. What can we learn about Michael Jordan’s early career?
A. He relied too much on teamwork to win championships.
B. His outstanding personal performance failed to bring him championships.
C. He lacked materials in competing against strong opponents and failed.
D. He applied teamwork mindset to business and achieved great success.
38. By quoting Michael Jordan’s saying “I can accept failure, but I can’t accept not trying”, the author intends to advice readers to ______.
A. avoid making any mistakes B. pursue perfection
C. do their best D. rely on personal talent
39. In terms of becoming a leader, Michael Jordan may agree that ______.
A. actions speak louder than words.
B. many hands make light work.
C. good things come to those who wait.
D. With great power comes great responsibility.
40. The main purpose of the passage is to ______.
A. show the great success of Michael Jordan
B. tell the readers how Michael Jordan became a successful leader.
C. demonstrate the important roles of leaders in a team or business.
D. share leadership fundamentals from Michael Jordan

I’ve always found small talk problematic-boring at best, stressful at worst. A colleague commenting on the weather … The postman asking, “How are you today?”
When I worked in book publishing, networking was essential. I could easily discuss authors or budgets. But asking how someone got to an event? Or where they parked? I didn’t care! These conversations that everyone seemed to find easy put me on edge.
Every chat felt like I was acting and being judged. I didn’t know the rules. How long should small talk last? Should I be honest or entertaining? I worried my responses were either too dull or overly enthusiastic.
All that changed at a friend’s art show this year. Inspired by the self-help author Wayne W. Dyer’s advice, “Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change,” I decided to change my approach.
I asked a freelance photographer, “What’s your star sign?” She was surprised but answered, “Aquarius (水瓶座).” We talked comfortably. I asked others different questions, like, “What was your art teacher like?” By the end of the night, I’d had several fun conversations.
Later, I experimented. I avoided questions about weather or kids and asked things I found interesting. When a barista (咖啡师) asked, “How are you enjoying the sun?” I replied, “I like spring, but autumn is my favorite. What about you?” At a writer’s event, I asked, “What was your favorite subject in school?”
The results were amazing. People were not only willing to join in but seemed relieved. Conversations became real and unpredictable. I learned about a graduate’s love for beekeeping and a nurse writing a novel.
There were awkward moments. Some didn’t get it and left. A few were suspicious. But I didn’t take it personally; most welcomed the change.
By the end of the month, I’d realized small talk has a purpose. It’s a way to connect with others. Now, small talk doesn’t make me anxious. Instead of feeling pressured to “get it right”, I choose what to talk about.
I understand now how we’ve all learned to follow the same script to find common ground. But that doesn’t mean you can’t change that script and make it more real and interesting.
41. Why did the author initially dislike small talk?
A. She found it difficult to make friends. B. She didn’t want to waste her work time.
C. She considered it artificial and pressured. D. She felt it consumed too much energy.
42. What motivated the author to try a new strategy?
A. A shift in personal mindset. B. A desire to meet more people.
C. A need to improve networking . D. A moment of social discomfort.
43. What did the author discover during her experiments?
A. Familiar topics worked better. B. Predictable talk felt more safe.
C. Most avoided unusual questions. D. People welcomed unconventional topics.
44. The underlined phrase “put me on edge” in Paragraph 2 most probably means ______.
A. made me excited B. made me nervous
C. made me disappointed D. made me angry
45. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. How to Make Small Talk Less Stressful B. Changing the Script of Small Talk
C. The Importance of Finding Common Ground D. My Unpleasant Experience with Small Talk

Star Wars has always featured many alien characters. However, until recent years, its human main characters looked quite similar. Heroes like Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi were all white men. This became a big problem for Disney when it planned to restart the series in the 2010s. People’s expectations had changed: parents hoped their kids could watch heroes of different races and genders, and global box office results could decide a movie’s success or failure.
The Force Awakens, released in 2015, became the fourth highest-earning movie worldwide. One key reason was its cast with actors from different backgrounds, which brought great changes to the Star Wars series. Looking back, the 1977 film A New Hope paid little attention to racial and gender equality. Women hardly held lightsabers (光剑) until the prequel (前传) films in the 2000s, and even then, only small female roles got such chances. So the studio hadto attract old fans while creating new heroes for modern audiences.
Rogue One (2016) was set in the time of the early Star Wars trilogy (三部曲) and hired actors from many countries. The rebel fighters in it include Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. Mads Mikkelsen, playing scientist Galen Erso, said, “Star Wars has different races and creatures from various galaxies. It would feel strange if all characters were Americans.” Thanks to this design, children all over the world can find heroes who look like themselves.
Just like The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi with Rey as the heroine, Rogue One centers on Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones. Jones said, “It is natural to have female heroes. Lots of action series only have male leads. We want viewers to understand Jyn’s feelings instead of only judging her appearance.”
Riz Ahmed once said minority actors are offered limited roles. In Rogue One, he plays an empire pilot who joins the rebels. He refused to act in flat, stereotyped roles and hoped his works could change public opinions.
It is common for old popular series to keep up with modern society. Works like Star Trek and James Bond have existed for decades and seem old-fashioned now. George Lucas created Star Wars based on social problems of his time. New Star Wars films use the faraway galaxy to stand for our real world full of different kinds of people.
46. Why did Disney decide to make Star Wars heroes more diverse?
A. Old fans refused to watch white male heroes
B. Foreign actors asked for more roles
C. All other movie series had diverse casts
D. Public demands and box office needs changed
47. Which of the following is true about A New Hope (1977)?
A. It had several female heroes with lightsabers.
B. It cared little about racial and gender balance.
C. It became the fourth highest-earning movie.
D. It invited actors from many different countries.
48. What can we infer from Mads Mikkelsen’s words?
A. American actors should not appear in Star Wars
B. Alien creatures are more important than human roles
C. A worldwide cast fits the setting of Star Wars
D. Kids only like characters from their own country
49. What is Riz Ahmed’s attitude toward traditional minority roles in films?
A. He thinks they fail to show rich characters
B. He considers them necessary for box office
C. He believes they are popular with audiences
D. He hopes more actors will accept such roles
50. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The long history of the Star Wars film series
B. How Star Wars changed to meet modern values
C. Different actors playing roles in Rogue One
D. Reasons for the great success of The Force Awakens
D
For ancient civilizations that used writing, written records can answer many social questions. Therefore, archaeologists (考古学家) studying these societies aim to find such texts. Early digs at Near Eastern sites often focused on recovering clay tablets (泥板). Major finds still occur, for example at Ebla in Syria, where a collection of 5,000 clay tablets written in an early Akkadian language form was discovered in the 1970s.
In each early literate society, writing had its own purpose. For instance, Mycenaean clay tablets from around 1200 B. C. were all commercial records of goods at palaces. This reveals aspects of their economy and crafts, but accidents of preservation may mislead us. The Mycenaeans might have used spoilable materials for literary texts, now lost. For Classical Greece and Rome, mainly official orders carved on marble (大理石) have survived; fragile
paper rolls with literary texts have only remained in good condition when kept in dry Egypt or under Pompeii’s volcanic ash.
Coins also provide written records: they show where found, indicating trade, and their engraved words tell about the issuing authority, whether city-states or rulers.
Recently, reading the symbols on stones at Maya centers has advanced Mesoamerican archaeology. Previously thought to be only calendar or religious, these carved texts are now seen as real historical events, mainly Maya kings’ deeds. We can now determine the likely territories belonging to each Maya center, giving Maya history a new dimension.
Written records greatly aid our knowledge, but we should not accept them uncritically. We must consider misleading information from preservation and literacy’s uses. Records can shape our questions and terms. For example, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (编年史), compiled around 1155AD, mentions kings around 500 AD, leading historians to think of kings and states then. However, archaeology suggests a full state society only emerged around 780 AD or 871AD; earlier so-called kings were likely chiefs, like those in recent Africa or Polynesia. Thus, written records should be interpreted with other archaeological evidence.
51. Why did early digs at Near Eastern sites mainly aim to find clay tablets?
A. To find out what writing systems those societies used.
B. To prove that those civilizations used clay tablets for history.
C. To find out the answers to their questions about those societies.
D. To find signs that other languages besides Akkadian were used.
52. Why does the author mention Greek and Roman writings?
A. To explain why early civilizations mainly wrote on stone and clay but not fine paper.
B. To show how preservation problems can affect our understanding of ancient societies.
C. To compare how writing was used in Greece and Rome historical records.
D. To prove that paper texts could survive as well as marble texts.
53. What could archaeologists determine after understanding the symbols on stones in Mesoamerica?
A. What calendar types were developed there. B. What the Maya believed about gods.
C. When stone pillars were first used. D. Which territories belonged to each Maya center.
54. What is misunderstood by historians about Anglo-Saxon?
A. A full state society only emerged around 780 or 871 AD.
B. The kings were equal to chiefs.
C. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle was compiled around 1155 AD.
D. The term “king” appeared around 500 AD.
55. What can we infer about ancient written records from paragraph 5?
A. They should be interpreted combining other archaeological evidence.
B. Historians find them more interesting than archaeologists do.
C. They are the only reliable sources about the society.
D. Written records are of little use to Archaeologists in interpreting history.

Joe Eitl, a 37-year-old man born with Down syndrome (唐氏综合症) and severe heart defects, has long struggled with serious health problems. With only one ventricle (心室) and a hole in his heart, he has undergone countless surgeries and taken medications since childhood. However, these treatments are merely temporary stopgap measures that can only prolong his life instead of curing his disease. Surprisingly, Joe has outlived his predicted life span and built a lively and joyful life.
Despite his health struggles, Joe is extremely positive and popular in his community. He is a Special Olympics multisport athlete, has fronted a local rock band, and even has a bakery sandwich named after him. Yet his condition worsened sharply one year ago. Severe heart failure weakened his body, caused fluid retention and damaged his liver. His parents began the complicated process of applying for a combined heart and liver transplant, and the once energetic Joe often felt exhausted and low-spirited.
To cheer him up Joe’s mother Peg shared his tough medical journey on Facebook. Knowing Joe loved receiving physical letters, their friends and relatives called on strangers to send him cards and blessings. The post was widely shared, and countless warm mails poured in continuously. Kind words and hand-drawn pictures from strangers greatly lifted Joe’s spirits on his hardest days.
Unfortunately, Joe’s transplant application was once turned down, as the medical committee worried he could not survive the risky operation. Still, doctors have not given up treatment and are trying to improve his physical condition to increase the possibility of a successful transplant.

61.作文:
Dear John,
Hope this email finds you well. I’m extremely delighted to give you a brief account of the opening ceremony of the new semester held in our school.
The whole ceremony followed a clear procedure. It began with the National Flag raising ceremony, during which all teachers and students stood straight and sang the national anthem. Afterwards, a student representative delivered a speech. At the end of the ceremony, our headmaster gave an inspiring address. Both the student representative and the headmaster shared similar expectations for us. They advised us to set clear goals and take practical action to realize them. Meanwhile, we were encouraged to think independently and communicate actively with others. They also wished every student healthy growth and all-round development.
The ceremony left me a deep impression. I realize senior high school is a new starting line. From now on, I will stick to my goals, keep thinking and never stop making progress. I wonder what school activities you have at your school. Looking forward to your reply.
Best wishes
Yours sincerely
