We stood in the corridor behind the stage. The floor was cold through my shoes, and my heart was a drum somebody else was beating. | I held my hands behind my back so that nobody would see them shaking. | Somewhere behind me, someone was breathing too fast. So was I.
The lights came up, and the audience turned into a warm, faceless blur. | It lasted three minutes and felt like three seconds. | When it was over I let out a breath I did not know I had been holding, and the weight came off my chest like a coat I had forgotten I was wearing.
The kitchen at six in the morning has its own weather. The light comes in through the window in long, forgiving stripes. | My father was already there, and his back was a wall I had learned to walk past. | We had never spoken more than three words before school.
Then I saw what he was doing: he was making two breakfasts, and eating neither. | My father was a door that was always unlocked, and I never once noticed. | I sat down, and the silence at the table was not an empty silence. It was a full one.
The old man sold newspapers at the corner. Every morning I passed his stall, and we nodded at each other. | Then one rainy week the stall was closed, and a note was taped to the counter: “Keep the papers dry, will you?” | I covered the papers and sat on his stool, and the rain came down like something being poured from a great height.
He came back at eight, soaking, and said thank you as if I had done nothing. | What he had actually asked me was not about newspapers. It was about being asked. | Memory is a room we keep the light on in, and that note is the lamp.
