Nobody had ever asked me that question before.
The words had been waiting in my head for years, unused.

He said it as if it were nothing. It was everything.

She put a pencil on my desk and said nothing about my paper. “Write down yesterday’s you,” she said, and went on to the next desk. | I wrote one sentence. She read it and nodded. | That was in September. | I did not think about it again for a long time.
It was the pencil that did it — short and blunt by December, and she never asked for it back. | And then it hit me, standing in a corridor years later: she had not been teaching me maths. She had been waiting for me to start. | I said nothing. There was nothing to say. | I put the pencil in my pocket and did not give it back.
My father left for work before I got up and came back after I went to bed. For years, our conversations were notes on the fridge. | “Don’t stay up too late,” he wrote. I never wrote back. | I was too young to know what I had been given.
He has been gone for years. His coat is still hanging by the door, and nobody has moved it. | It was only then, standing in that hallway with my own child asleep upstairs, that I understood. | He had not been writing to me. He had been coming home. | I did not have the words for it. I still do not.
The old man at the corner shop sold newspapers. Every morning I passed his stall, and we nodded at each other. We had never spoken more than three words. | One rainy week the stall was closed, and a note was taped to the counter: “Keep the papers dry, will you?” | I covered the papers and waited on his stool until he came back.
He thanked me and went back to work, as if nothing had happened. | Years later I found the note, still folded in a coat pocket, and understood what he had actually asked me. | It was never about the newspapers. It was about being asked. | Nobody had ever asked me for anything before. | I still have the note.
