Do you want to stay away from colds? Then put on a happy face.
Compared to unhappy people, those who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study. “It's possible that being happy helps the body fight illnesses.” said the researchers from New York University.
“It seems that positive feelings may reduce the danger of illness.” said the study's chief researcher Sheldon Cohen.
In an earlier study, Cohen found that people who were cheerful and lively caught coughs and colds less often. People who showed feelings were also less likely to tell their doctors that they felt ill.
In this study, Cohen has interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks. During the interviews, the people were given colds by doctors and had to stay alone in a room for six days.
The results showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get ill. But for people who said that they felt happy during the research period, their illness was less serious and lasted for a shorter time.
Cohen believes that when people experience positive feelings, their body may produce a chemical that helps fight against illness and disease. So if you are worried about your health, look on the bright side more often.

Have you ever thought of taking a train and having an adventure? Riding the train can be a real adventure. That is how I feel every time I take Amtrak. I often take a four-hour trip to visit my children. Every time I take this trip I never know what will happen.
Last week when I was on the train and over an hour into the train ride, there was a man sitting by himself in the back of the train carrying on a mobile phone conversation—in another language. It was loud and disturbed most of the people on the train. I thought it was annoying.
Fortunately I sat next to a wonderful old lady who was taking a two-day trip by train. She said her two daughters were distraught at the thought of her driving for three days to reach her home, although she had no trouble driving. The train ride was the only choice for her. She loved to look out of the window and watch the world go by on the train.
She was fun to talk to and asked me when my children started being parents. That is a very good question. Both of us are old and have children. She asked that same question from time to time.
There are always many people on the train from all walks of life, different countries, and many languages. Riding the train is a great way to increase your knowledge and take in all kinds of cultures. If you get hungry, you can buy food in the food car at any time. If you need to use the restroom, there is always one available.
It sure beats driving the car, which has to stop for food and restrooms. And it is better than taking the bus.

Ten years ago, I wrote my first book. I tried to get it published. So I sent the first chapter (章节) to a publishing company. In this chapter, two friends met for coffee and had an argument. I thought it was interesting and felt quite satisfied with this opening.
While waiting for a reply from the company, I happened to read a writing guide. It showed an example of a bad opening: It described two characters sitting in the kitchen drinking tea and there was no development in the story. Such an opening could not hold readers’ attention. Reading this, I said to myself that my opening was a good one because it was different from the example. But I was not as confident as before.
So I sent my first chapter to my friend Mike, an experienced writer, hoping to hear some positive comments from him. But he replied that he didn’t like it because the characters did nothing but sit there talking. I felt disappointed. To make things worse, a rejection letter from the company arrived a few days later. I was hurt. I went through a period of sadness, with lots of crying and lots of ice cream.
Six months later, in a bookstore, I picked up a book, read the first few pages and found them really boring. The opening was all about three people sitting in the bar, complaining to each other. At that moment, I saw the truth: The first chapter of my book was boring, too. Readers didn’t know enough about my characters and therefore couldn’t understand how their argument helped develop the story. This is one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned as a writer: It’s easier for me to see my own mistakes from a reader’s point of view. From then on, I read my books like I read somebody else’s works.
29. What did the author think of the opening of her own book at first?
A. Humorous. B. Boring. C. Disappointing. D. Interesting.
30. The writing guide showed ________.
A. a polite reply B. a poor opening C. a simple letter D. a nice character
31. The author sent the first chapter to Mike ________.

C. to get his nice comments D. to exchange works with him
32 What did the author mean by saying “lots of ice cream” in Paragraph 3?
A. She was sad. B. She was rich. C. She was healthy. D. She was hungry.
33. What is the lesson the author has learned?
A. To send publishers the whole book.
B. To ask a friend to write the opening.
C. To treat her own works as others’ works.
D. To read a writing guide before writing a book.

Many people look up to their brothers and sisters. Now researchers have discovered that songbirds also look to their brothers and sisters as role models (榜样) — even more than they look up to their parents.
In the wild, songbirds usually depend on their parents for the first 10 to 14 days of their life. Then they leave their parents. After that, they learn life skills through direct experience or by observing (观察) other birds around them.
To study the learning behavior of young songbirds, the researchers did an experiment on 51pairs of songbird parents and their 229 kids. They created a puzzle that required the songbirds to open a box to get some food in it.
After studying the birds’ problem — solving behavior for 10 weeks, the researchers made some interesting findings. Some young birds worked out how to get the food by themselves. The rest of the young birds learned to solve the puzzle from others: Among them, about 94% learned it from their brothers and sisters, less than 2% learned it from their parents, and about 4% followed the lead of other adults. These research findings showed that the young birds’ solution strategies (策略) were more strongly influenced by how their brothers and sisters solved the puzzle.
The researchers say that brothers and sisters are important role models for songbirds to learn the skills they need to survive. The researchers believe that songbirds can better adjust to changes in the environment because they can learn from different role models.
34. What do we know about songbirds from Paragraph 2?
A. They depend on other birds to find their parents.
B. They look after their parents before leaving them.
C. They gain life skills and experience from humans.
D. They live with their parents for two weeks at most.
35. Why did the researchers create a puzzle for the songbirds?
A. To count the number of them. B. To study their learning behavior.
C. To understand their sleeping habit. D. To test the relations between them.
36. In the study, the rest of the young birds learned how to solve the puzzle mainly from ________,
A. their parents B. the researchers
C. other adult birds D. their brothers and sisters
37. According to the researchers, learning from different role models can help songbirds ________.
A. look up to human beings B. share puzzle boxes
C. survive environmental changes D. influence their parents
38. Where is this passage most likely taken from?
A. A science magazine. B. A sports website.
C. A learner’s dictionary. D. A music textbook.
