From old Desks
to Smart Classrooms
Children once studied in drafty wooden shacks with cracked desks. Today, modern classrooms are equipped with interactive screens, VR headsets, and high-speed internet.

Look at this powerful side-by-side comparison. On the left, a typical rural classroom from decades ago — drafty, with broken wooden desks and a cracked blackboard.
On the right, a modern smart classroom where students wear VR headsets and explore virtual worlds. The transformation is not just about buildings — it is about what children can imagine and reach.
Today, even remote villages have access to digital learning resources that were unimaginable a generation ago.

Healthcare is another area where the transformation is truly remarkable. Not long ago, local doctors only had the "three old pieces" — a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, and thermometer.
Patients had to travel for hours to the nearest city just for a basic scan. Today, the four-panel image on the left shows how county hospitals have moved from early CT scanners to modern high-resolution MRI machines.
People no longer need to leave their hometown for advanced diagnosis — quality care is now available locally.

03 · COMMUNICATION

From Letters and Pagers

Old pager vs. modern smartphone
1978 · 1998 · 2018 — three decades of communication
Once, families waited weeks for a letter. Then came pagers and brick-sized "mobile phones."
Today, video calls connect relatives across the world in an instant.
MAIL → PAGER → SMARTPHONE

Communication is perhaps the most intimate change in daily life. A generation ago, sending a letter home meant waiting weeks for a reply.
Then came the pager era — people rushed to find a public phone the moment the device beeped. The first "mobile phones" were heavy bricks that only the wealthy could afford.
Today, every pocket holds a supercomputer. Video calls, instant messaging, and live streaming have made distance disappear entirely. The world feels smaller, but closer.

Transportation is perhaps the most visible change. The left image shows the Huanggang Railway Station — the upper photo from the steam era, the lower from today's high-speed rail platform.
For decades, traveling home for the Spring Festival meant squeezing onto a green-skinned train with thousands of others, often standing for hours.
Today, the bottom image tells the new story: clean, quiet high-speed trains board in an orderly fashion. A journey that once took a full day now takes a few hours. Distance has collapsed.

We used to have to travel far to see a doctor.
否定式是 didn't use to do,注意这里用原形 use,不是 used。
疑问式是 Did ... use to do ...?
练习:used to do 句型运用
There (be) a small school here, but now there is a big one.
He used to play football after school.
(用there used to be)
used to be
He didn't use to play football after school.
There used to be no supermarket in our town.

这是there be句型的used to,答案是used to be。
第三题:翻译句子,用there used to be结构。
