Period 3 Using Language
Asking for and Giving Directions · Beijing Olympic Forest Park
Listening & Speaking Guide
Before You Start
Today you will listen to three friends planning a bike trip in the park, then give directions yourself. Watch out for the phrases Chinese students often get wrong.
1. Before You Listen
Look and match
Look at the photos from Beijing Olympic Forest Park. Match each activity (A–F) with the correct photo.
· A. rent a cycle B. walk through an underwater corridor C. rent a pedal boat
· D. watch a fountain performance E. go on a children’s ride F. look at flowers
Then discuss with your deskmate:
· Which of these have you actually tried? Which would you skip? Why?
· If a foreign tourist stops you and asks for directions in English, what is the very first sentence you say? Write it down: ____________________
Predict
Look at the map in your textbook. Jake, Linlin and Yuhui are standing at the South Gate.
· Where do you think they will go first? Why do you think so?
· Will they walk, cycle, or take a boat? Give one reason for your guess.
2. While You Listen
Listen once. Choose the main idea.
Choose the best answer. Do not check with others yet.
· A. The three friends are talking about what to have for dinner.
· B. The three friends are planning a bike route around the park.
· C. The three friends are complaining that the park tickets are too expensive.
Listen again. Number the places in order.
Circle the places they visit on the map. Number them in the order they visit. Do not draw lines yet.
Listen a third time. Answer in one sentence.
This time, do not just catch place names. Answer these questions in one short sentence each.
· Who is the planner of the route? Who is the dreamer? Who is the realist? How do you know?
· Why do they rent bikes first? What would happen if they walked?
· Linlin mentions the children’s ride "on our way back". What does this tell you about her?
· If you only had two hours in this park, which two places would you choose? Why?
3. Language Focus
Phrases you heard
Go back to the listening text. Write the direction words and sequence words you actually heard.

Sequence words
Fill in the blanks
Use each word once: north, on, straight
· (1) It’s about 800 metres ______ of the gate.
· (2) The fountain is ______ your left when you enter.
· (3) Go ______ ahead until you come to the bridge.
Watch out — common mistakes
These four mistakes show up again and again in oral exams. Learn the right form.
✗ Wrong
✓ Right
Why
in the left side
on the left side
Use on, not in, for sides
go to north
go north / head north
North is an adverb here
How to get there?
How do I get there?
Questions need inversion
It’s far from here.
It’s about 2 km away.
Exam answers love a real distance
Culture note
· English speakers always open with "Excuse me" before stopping a stranger. Skipping it sounds rude.
· They often offer alternatives: "If you don’t want to walk, you can…"
· When giving directions, they name landmarks, not just turns: "When you see the fountain, you’re close."
4. Speaking
Work in pairs. Pick the level you can do.
Level 1 Basic
Follow the model dialogue. Take turns asking for and giving directions to three places in the park.
Level 2 Intermediate
Add follow-up questions after each answer: "How far is it?" "Is it close to the lake?" "Is it worth it?"
Level 3 Challenge
One student gives a wrong direction on purpose. The other must spot the mistake and correct it using the map.
5. Create Your Ideal Theme Park
· In groups, decide what type of park you want: rides, shows, food stands. Give each area a creative name.
· Take turns introducing your park. Use "on the … side of", "be close to", "be far from".
· Homework: draw a poster (map + short introduction). Present it in 60 seconds next class.

6. Your Notes
Write in your notebook:
· Which direction phrase tripped you up today?
· What will you say first if a foreigner asks you for directions tomorrow?
· One thing I want to practise more: ____________________
Answer Key
Part 1
B F A C E D (order may vary with the photos)
Part 2
Activity A: B.
Route: South Gate → Funabout (bike rental, across from the gate) → follow the main path north → Underwater Corridor (on the left, about 1 km ahead) → Big Fountain (north-east of the corridor, about 10 minutes’ ride) → Flower Land (north-west corner) → Wali Lake (cruise) → ride past Open-air Opera → South Gate.
Activity C (sample answers): Yuhui is the planner (he suggests bikes and timing); Linlin is the dreamer (she keeps adding places she wants); Jake is the realist (he checks the map and the time). Bikes save walking time. Linlin’s "on our way back" shows she is thinking of others, not just herself.
Part 3
Fill in the blanks: (1) north (2) on (3) straight
Part 4 & 5
Open-ended. When scoring, focus on whether the direction expressions were used, not on whether the park design is "good".
