Procrastination Is Not Laziness(拖延不是懒)
范畴:人与自我(做人与做事) | 体裁:议论文 | 词数:365 | 难度:★★
姓名:______________ 班级:______________ 日期:______________
Part 1 语篇 Reading
Procrastination Is Not Laziness
✎ 边读边记 · 每段一个好表达
Everyone says the same thing about the student who delays: "He is lazy." This opinion is common, comfortable, and wrong.
Laziness means you do not want to work. But watch a procrastinator(拖延的人) for an hour and you will see something strange: they are busy the whole time. They clean the room, answer messages, and organize folders they never open. By evening they are tired, and the important task is still waiting. They are not avoiding work. They are avoiding a feeling.
Psychologists describe it as a battle between two parts of the same brain: the part that wants the reward now, and the part that wants the good result later. When a task feels heavy or unclear, the first part wins. Notice that this is not about being weak. Everyone's brain does this. The problem is not the task. The problem is the fear: What if I do this badly? What if I find out I cannot do it?
That is why the usual advice — "Just stop being lazy" — fails. You cannot cure fear with a scolding(责骂). But you can make the task smaller. Two tricks are worth trying.
The first is the two-minute rule. Tell yourself you will work on the task for two minutes only. Anyone can survive two minutes, and starting is the hardest part. Most of the time, once you begin, you keep going. You can also prepare the first step the night before: open the book, put the pen on the page.
The second is to allow a bad first version. Write the worst paragraph you can, on purpose. A weak first draft(草稿) can be improved. A blank page cannot.
Online videos like to call these "mind tricks." They are not tricks. A wall between you and the work is exactly what procrastination is, and these are simply ways of making the wall lower.
So the next time you catch yourself tidying your desk instead of starting your essay, ask an honest question. Not "Why am I so lazy?" but "What am I afraid of?" You are not bored by the work. You are frightened of failing at it. The answer will tell you what to do next.
