PAST AND PRESENT — STUDENT PROJECT GUIDE
Choose one part of local life and compare how it was in the past with how it is now. You may study transport, shopping, communication or leisure activities. Work in a pair and choose your topic by March 5.
Collect at least two kinds of evidence. For example, you can interview an older resident and compare old and new photographs. Ask permission before using a person's photo or words. Record where the information came from so you can check it later.
Your report should include one clear change, one benefit and one problem that still needs attention. Do not write only “Everything is better now.” Support your ideas with examples. A new road may make travel easier but also bring more traffic noise.
Bring a first draft on March 12. Another pair will read it and ask questions. The final report is due on March 16. You may include a simple drawing or chart, but it must help explain the information.
Each pair will have four minutes to present. Both members should speak. At the end, suggest one small action students can take to make local life better. The project is about understanding change and taking part in improvement.
46. How should students work?
A. With no topic. B. In groups of ten.
C. In pairs. D. Only alone.
47. What is required when collecting evidence?
A. Only a guess. B. A list of expensive objects.
C. Only one new photograph. D. At least two kinds of evidence.
48. What should a report include?
A. Every street name. B. Only praise for the present.
C. Only a drawing without words. D. A change, a benefit and a remaining problem.
49. When is the final report due?
A. March 5. B. March 20.
C. March 12. D. March 16.
50. What should students suggest at the end?
A. A reason never to compare evidence. B. A small action to improve local life.
C. A new school uniform. D. A way to avoid interviews.
B
Grandfather showed me a photograph of his childhood street. Children were playing a game with stones. There were no screens in the picture. “Were your games boring?” I asked without thinking.
He smiled and described the rules. The game needed quick hands, patience and several friends. They changed the rules when younger children joined. Sometimes a game lasted until someone called them home for dinner.
That weekend, I asked him to teach my friends. At first, we dropped the stones and laughed at ourselves. Soon we began helping one another. We did not notice the time until the sky grew dark.
Later, I showed Grandfather a cooperative game on my tablet. He was unsure about the controls, so I explained them slowly. We worked together to solve a small puzzle. He said the screen was different, but the pleasure of cooperating felt familiar.
We decided not to call one kind of play “better” in every way. Outdoor games helped us move and meet face to face. Digital games could offer new puzzles, but we still needed to manage our time. The best lesson was learning from each other instead of judging before trying.
51. What was in the old photograph?
A. A tablet on every desk. B. Children playing with stones.
C. A large computer room. D. A train station.
52. Why were game rules sometimes changed?
A. To include younger children. B. To stop everyone playing.
C. To make the game impossible. D. To sell the stones.
53. What happened when the writer's friends tried the game?
A. They finished without any mistakes. B. They gradually helped one another.
C. They refused to touch the stones. D. They left after one second.
54. What felt familiar to Grandfather in the tablet game?
A. The pleasure of cooperating. B. The screen's color.
C. The price of the tablet. D. Every control button.
55. What did they learn?
A. Try and understand before judging. B. Only one kind of play has value.
C. All old games are boring. D. All digital games are harmful.
C
Our school garden has a row of young trees. Last spring, students planted them and took many photographs. After the first week, however, fewer students came to check them. Some thought planting day was the whole project.
The gardening teacher asked us to make a care schedule. Two students would check the garden each afternoon and record the condition of the soil and leaves. We learned that plants do not all need water at the same time. A gardener helped us understand when watering was necessary.
During a holiday, no one was sure who should come. We realized that the schedule needed names and a way to contact a replacement. We changed it and kept a shared record at school.
Three months later, most trees were growing well. The record showed not only water amounts but also problems and advice. Our group had learned to notice changes early and ask for help before guessing at a solution.
Planting trees is valuable, but long-term care is part of the responsibility. A photograph records one moment. A habit of checking and caring supports growth after the excitement has passed. The garden taught us that protecting the environment requires steady work, not only a special event.
56. What problem appeared after planting day?
A. Every student watered all day. B. All trees were moved indoors.
C. The garden had no soil. D. Fewer students checked the trees.
57. What did students record?
A. Only the number of cameras. B. Everyone's favorite film.
C. The condition of soil and leaves. D. The price of schoolbags.
58. Why was the schedule changed?
A. The teacher disliked all names.
B. Holiday duties and replacements were unclear.
C. Students no longer had trees.
D. The garden was closed forever.
59. What did the group learn to do?
A. Use photographs instead of care. B. Ignore small problems.
C. Water every plant as much as possible. D. Notice changes and ask for help.
60. What is the main message?
A. Environmental protection needs steady care. B. Plants never need advice or observation.
C. Pictures make trees grow faster. D. Planting day is the entire task.
D
In our invention club, a teacher asked us to design a container for carrying two apples. The container had to protect the fruit, use little material and be easy to carry. We could use paper, cloth or old boxes.
My first design was a large box with thick paper inside. It protected the apples, but it used too much material. My partner's design was a small cloth bag. It used less material, but the apples knocked against each other when we walked.
We combined our ideas. A folded piece of paper separated the apples inside the cloth bag. We tested the design by walking the same route with the same two apples. Then we checked the fruit and asked another student whether the bag was comfortable to hold.
The final design was not perfect. The paper needed replacing if it became wet. We included that limit in our explanation and suggested keeping the bag dry. We also showed the earlier models to explain why we made each change.
The task helped us see that design involves balancing different needs. Solving one problem may create another. A useful invention grows from clear goals, tests and honest discussion—not simply from choosing the strongest or largest material.
61. What did the container need to do?
A. Use only new metal. B. Protect two apples while using little material.
C. Keep food hot for a week. D. Carry a whole classroom.
62. What was wrong with the writer's first design?
A. It was too small for one apple. B. It had no paper inside.
C. It could not hold any fruit. D. It used too much material.
63. How did the team combine ideas?
A. Used ten apples instead. B. Removed all protection.
C. Put folded paper inside the cloth bag. D. Put both designs in a larger metal box.
64. What limit remained in the final design?
A. The apples always fell out. B. The bag could never be carried.
C. The paper needed replacing when wet. D. No one could open the bag.
65. What did the task teach?
A. Design must balance different needs. B. Only new materials are useful.
C. The largest design is always best. D. Testing is unnecessary.

A Greener and Friendlier School
Our school is becoming greener and friendlier.
There used to be an empty corner near our classroom. Now it is a reading area with books and plants. I have joined several activities to care for it. We use both sides of paper and keep useful boxes instead of throwing them away. Last week, my partner and I made a pencil holder from an old box. It is used for keeping pencils in order. Working together has helped us become closer friends. I will continue to take part in these useful activities.

M: No. I went straight to a heavy book.
W: Try small blocks and add them one by one. Record how many it can hold.

Our school Reuse Fair is on Friday. It will take place in the hall from two to four in the afternoon. Bring one clean object that someone else can still use. Books, bags and toys are welcome. Please attach a card explaining what the object is and how it can be used. Do not bring food. At the end, write one sentence about reducing waste. The aim is to give useful things a longer life.
