In the deep, dark ocean, scientists have made an amazing discovery. Using China’s manned submersible Fendouzhe, a team led by Chinese scientists found the world’s largest and deepest whale graveyard in the southeastern Indian Ocean, nearly 7,000 meters below the surface.
A whale graveyard is a large area on the seafloor where whale remains have collected over millions of years. When a whale dies and its body sinks to the bottom, it creates a special ecosystem. The whale body can feed deep-sea animals for many years. The bones are often covered with white microbes and special worms that eat the bone, turning the body into a busy undersea neighborhood.
The team made 32 dives and found five active whale falls and 476 fossil sites along a 1,200-kilometer stretch. The deepest active whale fall was at 6,789 meters, more than 2,500 meters deeper than any known before.
“We did not plan to find whale falls, so this was a wonderful surprise,” said Peng Xiaotong, a researcher on the team. The discovery shows how little we still know about the deep ocean, and how important it is to keep exploring the unknown world beneath the waves.
16. What did the scientists find in the Indian Ocean?
A. A new kind of fish.
B. The world’s largest whale graveyard.
C. An ancient ship.
D. A sunken city.

18. How deep was the deepest active whale fall found?
A. About 4,204 meters.
B. Nearly 6,000 meters.
C. 11,000 meters.
D. 6,789 meters.
19. What can we learn from Peng Xiaotong’s words?
A. The discovery was planned for a long time.
B. The team was not surprised at all.

D. They will stop exploring the deep ocean.
20. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Life of Whales
B. How to Build a Submarine
C. Animals in the Indian Ocean
D. China’s Deep-Sea Discovery

At the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, a countdown based on the 24 solar terms caught the world’s attention. The 24 solar terms, an ancient Chinese system used to guide farming, were recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2016.
But where did this system come from? An archaeological find in Taosi village, in Shanxi province, may hold the answer. In 2003, researchers found 13 columns of compressed earth at the Taosi site. At first, no one knew what they were for.
After years of watching the columns’ shadows under the sun, researchers realized they had found an ancient observatory. The work was slow and patient: researchers returned at different times of the year, watching how sunlight moved through the gaps between the columns. The columns were built about 4,000 years ago and were used to measure the angles of sunlight and determine the 24 solar terms of a year.
The Taosi site also gave us other surprises, including pottery with ancient pictures and a 4,000-year-old bronze bell, said to be the earliest musical instrument found in China. Today, less than 1 percent of the site has been dug up, so more secrets may still be waiting underground.

In Jinchang, a city in Gansu province, there was once a hill called “Black Mountain,” which was not a natural hill but an ugly scar left by mining. The land was covered with waste that poisoned the soil, so almost no plants could grow there. Strong winds often blew black dust into the city, and few birds would come near the place.
Then, in 2009, the local government and a mining company started an ecological restoration project. Workers first stabilized the loose slopes and built drip-irrigation systems. Instead of carrying soil from far away, engineers found a clever way: they used fine waste material from the mine, mixed it with useful microorganisms, and turned it into fertile planting material.
Li Hongqi, a 70-year-old volunteer known as “Tree Grandpa,” has planted and protected trees there for years. “I can’t plant as many trees as before, but I can still help protect them,” he said.
Today, the project has covered 2.68 million square meters. More than 740,000 trees and plants of 116 species have been planted. Over 200 kinds of birds and insects have returned, and the park now welcomes more than 100,000 visitors a year. Families come on weekends, children run along the green paths, and old people sit under the trees. The “Black Mountain” has truly turned green.
