I sat silently in my office, waiting for a computer science student whose paper exposed a clear problem: many details in his report were made up by AI tools. He had handed in chatbot-generated content as his own work, and I once planned to give him a failing grade. The more I turned the pages, the heavier my heart felt. Yet I decided to hear his explanation.
I have worked with early AI tools for nearly twenty years. After earning my doctor’s degree in computer science, I took jobs in the technology industry while continuing to teach university courses. I used AI daily to polish documents and speed up boring coding work for my own tasks. However, I stuck to a strict rule that students must keep away from AI in all assignments.
When the student walked in, he admitted using AI without hiding anything. He felt anxious, believing mastering AI was necessary for his future career, but having no clear idea about when and how to use it properly. Listening to his worries, I felt ashamed of what I did. I relied on AI every day, yet forced students to avoid it fully. It struck me that strict bans would only build a wall to hide my own confusion about the fast-changing learning environment.
I gave the student a chance to rewrite his report, and later held a class discussion to draw up an AI agreement together. At first, students stayed cautious, but they opened up after I shared my own AI experiences. After a heated discussion, we drew a line separating mechanical output from actual thinking. Automating repetitive tasks or literature searches, as well as producing outlines, was acceptable. Skipping critical analysis was not: it would remain strictly human tasks.
Now I always co-create such agreements with new classes. Besides this rule, I shorten students’ papers to two pages and value face-to-face discussions more. These changes push students to organize ideas logically and practice independent thinking, which is the true core of teaching in the AI age.
4. How did the author probably feel while she waited in the office?
A. Relieved. B. Awkward. C. Sympathetic. D. Annoyed.
5. What made the author ashamed?
A. The worsening learning environment.
B. Her inconsistent attitude toward AI use.
C. The student’s ignorance of AI’s weakness.
D. Her poor performance in technology industry.
6. What agreement did the author reach with her students?
A. AI is allowed to handle analysis tasks.
B. AI can help reach reasoning conclusions.
C. Students can depend on AI to form frameworks.
D. Students must label AI-generated content in their papers.
7. What message does the text deliver?
A. Teaching needs reforming to suit the times.
B. Face-to-face discussions are the best approach.
C. Specific rules should be made in the beginning.
D. Academic problems give rise to new technology.
D 5. B 6. C 7. A
根据第一段“He had handed in chatbot-generated content as his own work, and I once planned to give him a failing grade.(他把聊天机器人生成的内容当作自己的作业上交,我曾打算给他不及格。)”
根据第三段“I relied on AI every day, yet forced students to avoid it fully.(我每天都在使用人工智能,却强迫学生完全不要使用它。)”
根据第四段“Automating repetitive tasks or literature searches, as well as producing outlines, was acceptable.(将重复性任务、文献检索自动化以及生成大纲,都是可以接受的。)”
根据最后一段“These changes push students to organize ideas logically and practice independent thinking, which is the true core of teaching in the AI age.(这些改变促使学生有条理地梳理观点、锻炼独立思考能力,这正是人工智能时代教学的真正核心。)”
C
Gadusol, a natural chemical that protects transparent (透明的) fish eggs from the sun’s rays, has been produced in the lab using genetically engineered bacteria. Easier production of gadusol brings it one step closer to use as a more eco-friendly, transparent sunscreen for humans.
Existing in the eggs of zebrafish, salmon, sturgeon, as well as coral, gadusol can protect organisms from UV damage. As it’s only found in small quantities, garnering it naturally for use as a sunscreen is impractical.
A team led by Ping Zhang at Jiangnan University, China, introduced genes from zebrafish into the bacterium — Escherichia coli — to give it the enzymes (酶) needed to produce gadusol. Then, by using small RNA molecules (分子) to boost gadusol production in the bacteria, controlling the temperatures, and providing nutrients, they increased the yield by nearly 93 times, from 45.2 mg/L of liquid growth medium to 4.2 g/L.
In experiments, gadusol displayed antioxidant (抗氧化的) properties comparable to vitamin C, suggesting it may help address the chemicals that cause damage in cells. Gadusol is transparent, and yet is perfectly tuned to block out harmful rays from the sun, which makes it perfect for organisms hiding from enemies. Thanks to that quality, it might also avoid the white cast that some current sunscreens leave on the skin.
“I think we haven’t necessarily given it the praise that it deserves,” says James Gagnon at the University of Utah. According to Gagnon, further testing is needed, but the chemical is likely to be safe for humans and the environment because so many animals already use it. But he warns that there are two obstacles to overcome before gadusol can be commercialized. One is finding a way to mass-produce it economically, and the other is finding a mixture of chemicals that combines it into a solution that works as a long-lasting application.
8. What does the underlined word “garnering” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Distributing. B. Maintaining. C. Obtaining. D. Examining.
9. How did the research team increase gadusol production?
A. By removing harmful chemicals.
B. By changing the zebrafish’s genes.
C. By replacing the liquid medium regularly.
D. By improving the bacteria’s living conditions.
10. Which is gadusol’s advantage over conventional sunscreens?
A. Repairing cells. B. Being antioxidant.
C. Being transparent. D. Resisting harmful rays.
11. What would Gagnon probably advocate concerning gadusol?
A. Seeking practical alternatives. B. Conducting in-depth exploration.
C. Speeding up its commercialization. D. Mass-producing a specific solution.
C 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据第二段中“As it's only found in small quantities, garnering it naturally for use as a sunscreen is impractical. (由于它只存在于少量中,自然garnering它用作防晒霜是不切实际的。)”可知,gadusol在自然界中含量极少,因此自然地获取它来做防晒霜是不可行的。由此可推测“garnering”意为“获得、获取”和Obtaining同义。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Then, by using small RNA molecules to boost gadusol production in the bacteria, controlling the temperatures, and providing nutrients, they increased the yield by nearly 93 times (然后,通过使用小RNA分子来促进细菌中gadusol的产生,控制温度,并提供营养,他们将产量提高了近93倍。)”
根据第四段中“Gadusol is transparent, and yet is perfectly tuned to block out harmful rays from the sun... Thanks to that quality, it might also avoid the white cast that some current sunscreens leave on the skin. (Gadusol是透明的,却能完美地阻挡太阳有害射线……由于这一特性,它还可以避免一些现有防晒霜在皮肤上留下的白色残留。)”可知,gadusol相较于传统防晒霜的优势在于它是透明的。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“According to Gagnon, further testing is needed, but the chemical is likely to be safe for humans and the environment because so many animals already use it. But he warns that there are two obstacles to overcome before gadusol can be commercialized. (据Gagnon称,还需要进一步测试,但由于许多动物已经在使用这种化学物质,它可能对人类和环境是安全的。但他警告说,在gadusol商业化之前还有两个障碍需要克服。)”可知,Gagnon主张对gadusol进行更深入的测试和探索。

Maybe it’s the dream holiday, the new home, the fitness goal, or simply getting through a difficult phase of life. We tell ourselves that once we arrive there, we’ll finally feel different. And sometimes, for a while, we do. But the feeling rarely lasts as long as we expect it to. The excitement disappears gradually and before long we find ourselves searching for the next thing that will make us feel good again. The problem is that the desire for pleasure is never fully satisfied.
Psychologists call this the “hedonic treadmill” — our tendency to quickly adapt to life’s highs and lows before returning to a relatively stable baseline of happiness.
In a now-famous 1978 study, researchers observed three groups over time: lottery (彩票) winners, disabled accident victims, and a control group. The winners’ sudden happiness returned to previous levels after a year, while the victims’ unhappiness eased, leaving them only slightly less happy than the winners. In both cases, the effects of external events on happiness were short-lived. Essentially, this can be explained by hedonic adaptation theory: our happiness tends to return to a baseline level no matter what life throws at us. Does this mean pursuing things meant to improve our lives has no real benefit? And as pleasure wears off fast, can it create a fulfilling life by itself?
Psychotherapist Dr Victoria Froome says, “Events that tend to cause lasting effects relate to the six core ‘foundations’: identity, relationships, resilience (韧性), skills, values, and strengths.” What you build within yourself remains stable in the long run, while endless goal-pursuing leads to burnout.
So to break free from the hedonic treadmill, we should focus on inner stability. Besides, Dr Froome mentions therapies (疗法) like person-centred therapy, ACT and CBT, reminding us to use the right tools at the right time, especially if we are burnt out.
The hedonic treadmill suggests happiness never lies in constant upgrades or endless chasing. If searching for more exhausts you, grounding yourself in inner growth rather than material gain is the key to lasting happiness.
12. What can we learn about people’s desire for pleasure?
A. It can hardly be completely fulfilled.
B. It might grow stronger after hard times.
C. It stops people from setting new life goals.
D. It helps people build confidence in their lives.
13. Why is the 1978 study mentioned?
A. To illustrate an argument. B. To question an opinion.
C. To describe a phenomenon. D. To make a comparison.
14. What may fail to bring lasting happiness according to paragraph 4?
A. Falling in love. B. Becoming a parent.
C. Receiving a gift. D. Recovering from illness.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. External recognition also matters.
B. Stable joy arises from inner growth.
C. Why people always go after new pleasure.
D. The hedonic treadmill affects people’s life goals.
A 13. A 14. C 15. B
根据第一段“The problem is that the desire for pleasure is never fully satisfied. (问题在于,人们对快乐的渴望永远无法被完全满足。)”可知,人们对快乐的渴求几乎无法被彻底实现。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“In both cases, the effects of external events on happiness were short-lived. Essentially, this can be explained by hedonic adaptation theory: (两种情况都证明,外部事件对幸福感的影响是短暂的。这本质上可以用享乐适应理论解释)”可知,作者列举1978年的实验,是为了佐证、阐释享乐适应这一核心论点。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Events that tend to cause lasting effects relate to the six core ‘foundations’: identity, relationships, resilience, skills, values, and strengths. (能够带来长久影响的事件,与自我认知、人际关系、个人韧性等六大核心内在素养相关。)”可知,恋爱、为人父母、大病痊愈都属于塑造内在成长、维系深层关系的经历,能带来长久幸福;而收到礼物是短暂的外在收获,无法带来持久幸福感。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“If searching for more exhausts you, grounding yourself in inner growth rather than material gain is the key to lasting happiness. (如果你感到疲惫不堪,那么以内在成长为基础,而非追求物质利益,才是获得持久幸福的关键。)”可知,文章核心主旨是:稳定长久的快乐源于自身的内在成长。

Living on your own can give you an incredible sense of freedom, but many people still struggle. They claim: When you only need to answer to yourself in the house, it can be harder to have a regular rhythm in your day. ____16____
Predictable routines help to reduce stress and worry. They take away some of the exhaustion you might feel when faced with a long day ahead, and they reduce the day-to-day decision-making. Structured days help to maintain your mood and support mental strength. ____17____ For example, if you schedule in your exercise, you’re more likely to do it. If you plan regular mealtimes, it means you don’t forget to eat, which helps to keep your blood sugar levels stable.
____18____ If you make it very inflexible, it can become a source of tension and anxiety. There should be space for unexpected events — you might get a last-minute social invitation from a friend, the weather might be awful, or you might be feeling extremely tired. You should be allowed to accommodate these changes.
Sometimes you’ll have a day when you feel sad and lost. ____19____ However, if you can, get up and start following some of your routine — even if you only do the basics. It can help you to feel more purposeful.
Building a routine is an evolving process, and as you settle more into your solo (独居的) life, your routine will adapt and change. Celebrate being consistent, not perfect. ____20____ Overpacking your days will make them exhausting and stressful, which is why it’s just as important to add in periods of rest and relaxation.

The yellow postbox at the corner of Peepal Road had a bent mouth-like slot (投信口), and it leaned slightly left, as if it were bending over to listen. At least, that’s what eleven-year-old Naina believed.
Naina preferred drawing maps. On her study table lay a half-finished map titled The Island of Brave People. In the middle of the island was a blank spot shaped almost exactly like her. However, in real life, Naina was afraid of one thing more than anything else: speaking in front of people.
And the next Monday, she had to deliver a speech for the school storytelling competition. Fear followed her everywhere. All week she tried practising. In front of the mirror, her voice trembled. In front of her parents, her hands sweated. At night, her stomach twisted into tight knots (结).
On Thursday evening, while on her way home, she saw Rohan, who never dared to raise his hand to answer any questions in class, standing near the yellow postbox at the corner of Peepal Road. He looked around carefully. Then he slipped a folded paper inside. The postbox made a faint metallic sound, “Clink.”
The next day during math class, when the math teacher asked a difficult question, Rohan raised his hand immediately. Naina noticed this change and was astonished. After school, by the yellow postbox, Naina stopped Rohan and asked him, “What did you post yesterday? I saw you whispering to the postbox!” Naina asked, confused. Rohan kept silent for a moment. Then, he hesitated and sighed, “Promise you won’t laugh at me or judge me.” Naina nodded firmly. “I wrote that I’m scared of failing,” Rohan continued. “And the miracle was that I felt lighter after posting it. Maybe that does sound silly, but today I didn’t feel like hiding anymore. Remember not to tell that to anybody!” After stressing that repeatedly, Rohan went away.
Naina was left there, staring at the postbox and deep in thought. The postbox stood there, chipped and silent.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
That night, Naina couldn’t stop thinking about it. Inspired by Rohan’s experience, she decided to give it a try. She took out a piece of paper and wrote down her fear of speaking in public and worrying about messing up the coming speech. After finishing writing, she folded it carefully. With a racing heart, she walked to the old yellow postbox at the corner alone at dusk, hoping to get rid of her inner anxiety.
After Naina posted the letter, something amazing did happen. The heavy pressure that had bothered her for a whole week faded away gradually. She felt surprisingly relaxed and confident. The next day, Naina stood on the stage bravely. Her voice was steady and clear as she shared her story. Though she did not win the competition, she conquered her biggest fear. She realized true courage was never the absence of fear, but moving forward bravely despite fear.
