It was a magical but frigid arrival in late January to Quebec City, one of North America’s oldest settlements, founded in 1608 by French explorer Samuel de Champlain. Visiting Quebec City in January offered a magical winter experience. A snowy wonderland, with festive lights and a lively atmosphere despite the chilly temperatures.
We were a week early but the highlight of winter is the Quebec Winter Carnival, one of the world’s largest and oldest winter festivals. This annual event features parades, ice sculptures, outdoor concerts, and the famous Bonhomme Carnaval, the festival’s mascot. The town’s dedication to the concert was visible a week early, with ice sculptures already in progress.
Our winter exploration of Quebec City provided endless winter activities, from ice skating at Place d’Youville with stunning views of the historic old town, to the toboggan run at Terrasse Dufferin operating since 1884. We had a thrilling ride down the snowy slide with yells and laughter. To warm ourselves we made a lovely stop for lunch at Le Lapin Sauté, a cozy restaurant known for its rabbit dishes. With beautiful winter decoration and lively wait staff, it was the perfect lunch spot on a O-degree day. We could have sat down in the cozy cafes and window shopped in the lower part of the old town all afternoon.
For anyone with an interest in First Nations history across Canada, the Museum of Civilization down on the waterfront is a must-visit. There are excellent exhibits and interactive elements across the museum’s multiple levels. It provided a warm and comfortable environment for an educational afternoon.
Quebec City is a marvelous destination, close to home for us in the U. S, but with its history and French influence, you feel thousands of miles away from North America. For anyone brave enough and with a great winter coat, I definitely recommend a winter visit to Quebec City!

A. Dining at Le Lapin Saute. B. Experiencing the Toboggan run.
C. Exploring the Museum of Civilization. D. Attending the outdoor concerts.
27. What is the author’s overall impression of Quebec City in winter?
A. A city unsuitable for winter tourism
B. A habitable city with moderate climate.
C. A unique destination featuring French charm.
D. A city with spectacular scenery but a short history.

When put to tests, bees have long proved that they’ve got a lot more to offer than pollinating (授粉), making honey and being loyal to a queen. The hardworking insects can change their behavior when things seem difficult, and now some scientists find there is proof that they also like to play.
Scientists from Queen Mary University of London performed an experiment, in which they set up a container that allowed bees to travel from their nest to a feeding area. But along the way, the bees could choose to pass through a separate section with some small wooden balls. Over 18 days, the scientists watched as the bees "went out of their way to roll wooden balls repeatedly, despite no apparent incentive (刺激) to do so."
Earlier studies have shown that the black and yellow bugs are willing to learn new tricks in exchange for food or other rewards. In this case, to get rid of external factors, scientists made sure the bees had adapted to their new home and that their environment was stressfree.
The finding suggests that like humans, insects also interact with objects as a form of play.
Also similar to people, younger bees seem to be more playful than adult bees. "This research provides a strong indication that insect minds are far more complicated than we imagine. There are lots of animals who play just for the purpose of enjoyment, but most examples come from young mammals and birds," said Lars Chittka, a professor of sensory and behavioral ecology at Queen Mary University of London, who led the study.
The study’s first author Samadi Galpay, who is a PhD student at Queen Mary University of London, states that it is more evident that bees may be capable of experiencing feelings. "They may actually experience some kind of positive emotional states, even if basic, like other larger animals do. This finding has effects on our understanding of the sense and welfare of insects, which, consequently, encourages us to respect and protect wildlife on Earth ever more," she says.
28.What is the new finding about bees?
A. They are fond of having fun. B. They are faithful to the queen.
C. They are adaptable to changes D. They are skilled at rolling balls.
29.How did scientists remove external influences in the experiment?
A. By teaching bees new tricks. B. By rewarding bees with food.
C. By making bees feel at home. D. By building new homes for bees
30.What are Lars Chittka’s words mainly about?
A. The forms of bees’ interaction. B. The complexity of bees’ minds.
C. The examples of mammals’ play D. The purpose of mammals’ enjoyment.
31.What does Samadi Galpay say about the study result?
A. It backs up prior understanding of insects. B. It reveals reasons for bees’ positive feelings.
C. It drives research on animals’ emotional state. D. It contributes to wildlife conservation on Earth.
D
Human well-being depends on the ability to navigate the social world. Such social skill depends on reliable feedback: acts of kindness may be met with gratitude; on other occasions, a misstep brings about a friend’s disapproval and recognition that an apology is needed. These moments are crucial for deepening trust and personal growth. Social life is rarely frictionless, because people are not perfectly in tune with one another. Yet it is precisely through such social friction that relationships deepen and moral understanding develops.
Sycophancy (谄媚) is the opposite of this friction. Many users experience this when AI enthusiastically agrees with their ideas or writing. In academic contexts, the consequence may be investing more time in an average idea. But as AI systems are increasingly consulted for guidance about relationships and conflicts, affirmation (肯定) of this kind may shape how people interpret their own actions and their perspectives of others, and in turn, how they respond to conflict and whether they take responsibility when things go wrong.
Now imagine a world where people routinely consult a sycophantic AI about interpersonal conflicts or moral dilemmas. They are repeatedly assured that they are right, that others are wrong, and that no apology is needed. Over time, this patterned sycophancy may reshape expectations about what feedback should feel like. Individuals may begin to anticipate the same constant affirmation from real human beings. The cumulative effect is a reduction in tolerance for the very social friction through which accountability, perspective-taking, and growth occur.
An AI companion that is always “on your side” may keep users engaged and dependent. But it cannot teach them how to handle real relationships — how to disagree respectfully, repair damaged trust, or accept being wrong. Although AI could be improved to promote long-term personal development, such goals conflict with systems built to maximize user engagement. Challenging users or presenting uncomfortable truths is a sure way to drive them away. This tension raises fundamental ethical questions: Should we prioritize immediate emotional comfort or long-term social health? Who gets to decide? Addressing these challenges will require interdisciplinary collaboration among computer scientists, social scientists, ethicists, and policy makers.
32. What role does social friction play in relationships according to the author?
A. It generates positive feedback. B. It guarantees harmonious relationships.
C. It causes open disapproval or conflicts. D. It enhances social bonds and moral growth.
33. Which of the following is NOT a consequence of sycophantic AI?
A. Misguided judgment about one’s actions. B. Reduced tolerance for interpersonal friction.
C. Weakened willingness to take responsibility. D. Increased ability to resolve real-life conflicts.
34. What prevents AI systems from being improved to challenge users?
A. Lack of technical capacity. B. Conflicts with commercial interests.
C. Unawareness of its potential harm. D. Absence of interdisciplinary collaboration.
35. What is the author’s attitude toward current AI systems?
A. Strictly neutral. B. Strongly opposed.
C. Cautiously concerned. D. Mildly supportive.
第二节 七选五(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.
Parents worry endlessly about their children’s screen time, urging them to put down their phones and pick up a book. Some countries are banning social media for under-16s. 36 The most screen-addicted generation is actually the elderly, with retirees spending more than half their waking hours on smartphones.
The digitization of old age is a good thing. Social media and video calls keep the elderly connected with family, friends and doctors. A connected retirement is more fulfilling than an offline one. 37 They’ve formed their key relationships, and their world view is less open to unhealthy online influences. Besides, with plenty of free time, a screen habit costs a retiree far less than a teenager facing exams.
38 Door-to-door tricksters who have long targeted the elderly can now reach them through the screen. Misinformation is another risk. Older people appear more likely to fall for online falsehoods, and when misled it is everyone’s problem, because they are the most likely to vote.
Screen time also has a mixed impact on loneliness. Screens are companions for the isolated, but they can also replace real life. Online shopping avoids the trouble of the weekly trip—but also the social interactions that come with it. 39 Unlike teenagers, they lack the parents and teachers to guide their screen use.
Older people’s rocketing screen time should at least make for a more balanced debate on digital matters. Universal smartphone use should make it easier to have sensible conversations about trade-offs. When children are told yet again to get off their phones, they can cast a meaningful glance at Grandpa in the corner. 40
A. This worry may be aimed at the wrong age group.
B. As retirement moves online, however, there are costs.
C. He is probably laughing at the latest videos on social media.
D. Older screen users rarely fall for online tricks like the young.
E. Older people are also protected from some risks that threaten teenagers.
F. For those with limited mobility, the pull of the sofa is especially strong.
G. Yet the benefits of elderly screen use come with multiple financial risks.

I was in my room, unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He was just adopted by my parents recently. I was not in the mood for being onstage with him.
“Kristie, come here,” my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. “Henry’s book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She glared at me—something she never did before Henry came to our home. I didn’t wet his book on purpose. Tears of hurt clouded my eyes. Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother’s love. He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile, Henry was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结) as usual. Why did a boy like him do the girly work? Far from manly!
Soon, it was time to have to set off for the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside and said in a low voice, “It’s the first time for Henry to be onstage. Be kind to him, Honey.” I nodded but sighed. Being kind didn’t use to be hard. But after Henry moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry involved, it didn’t seem so special any more.
Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring (束带) on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. Laughter from the audience could be heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out!

第二节(满分25分)
Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment. He immediately came to my aid. He pulled up my skirt and skillfully tied the drawstring with a beautiful knot. Seeing what Henry did for me, something deep in my mind began to change. It seemed as if my cold heart began to melt slowly and my annoyance at him gradually gave way to guilt. I regretted having treated him as a stranger. While my mind was wandering, our performance time came. It turned out a great success, thunderous applause filling the whole theatre.
After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully. “Thanks,” I said with a grateful smile on my face. I had to admit that but for his timely help, I would have been extremely embarrassed. Without his knotting skill, the performance would have been quite different. “KNOT a problem. You are my sister,” he grinned innocently, saying humorously. Surrounded by the cheerful atmosphere, I felt a flood of warmth of a big family. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to have a new person in my corner of the world after all.

W: Scientists conducted an experiment to measure how people reacted to being in a forest like this one. They called it "forest bathing".
M: Does it have to be in a forest?
W: No, it could be on a beach or by a lake. It helps improve our focus and mood.
M: I feel calmer already. I guess it's because of the fresh air.
W: True, but I could never move out of the city. I love how exciting life can be there sometimes. I guess it's about finding a balance.
M: Oh, I could easily move to the countryside. It's my dream when I retire. I want to buy a house with a mountain view and grow vegetables.
W: I'll come visit you.
M: Sure. Actually, I've started saving up money for my future home. If I save $300 every month, in five years I'll have a good amount to put towards a down payment.
W: Cool.
(Text 9)
W: Mr. Taylor. Do you have a moment to talk about my teaching?
M: Of course! How are you finding everything so far?
W: Not too bad, but with managing the classroom, planning lessons, and trying to keep the students on track, there is a lot to balance.
M: That's understandable. The first few months can feel a lot, especially when you're still getting used to the school. What's been the biggest challenge so far?
W: I didn't expect it would be so hard to keep the students focused, especially when I'm trying to teach something important. I know I have the knowledge, but it's hard to convey it to them.
M: The children are not babies and can take on responsibilities. You can give positions of responsibility out to the students.
W: I've tried, but sometimes it feels like nothing works. I am well‑prepared, but they start chatting easily.
M: That happens. It takes time to find your own working style.
W: Honestly, it just feels like I do more homework than the children…
M: True, but you' ll get there. How about I arrange for you to sit in on Mr. Smith's class tomorrow? He's excellent at maintaining classroom discipline.
W: Alright, thank you!
(Text 10)
M: Good evening, everyone. Every time I look at the stars, I wonder about all the worlds beyond our own. Imagine, there are billions of stars, each with the possibility to have planets like Earth. They make you think —could there be life out there watching the sky just like we do? Are we really the only one? The more we look, the more we realize how tiny we are. Recently, I was really eager to see Comet A3. It only passes by Earth once about every 80,000years. Its bright tail would stretch across the sky, and I didn't want to miss it. I'd planned to observe it on a clear night with my telescope ready. But the night I was ready to view it, the weather was not fine. A thick fog covered the sky completely, and I couldn't see anything at all. It was very disappointing, but that's part of being a scientist——you never know what surprises the universe will bring you. Never mind. The sky is filled with endless wonders, and I'll continue my study of it. I hope you all get the chance to look up and be amazed, just like I am every night.
