C
When John was driving to work, someone suddenly cut him off in traffic. He screamed and yelled angrily at the driver. The driver, having a bad morning, shouted back in anger as well. All of us, sometimes, at least overreact to small things, but the reality is that it’s not worth it. Overreacting can lead to creating a bigger issue or accident. Stress in our lives can create the conditions for us to overreact. But even though doing so might let out one’s anger in the moment, it doesn’t solve the true source of the stress. All it does is to create more anxiety.
Listen, it’s totally okay to feel your emotions and want to express them sometimes, but real issues start to arise when we react much more than necessary. When you overreact, it might be a sign that there are other, deeper problems you aren’t dealing with, which are called emotional triggers (诱因). Everyone has emotional triggers and here are some common ones: events that repeat maddening experiences from one’s past, situations where one feels a sense of disrespect, and moments when one’s loved ones get harmed.
If we know what our triggers are, we can learn to be more in control of ourselves. Personally, I overreact whenever I work hard on something but someone is not pleased with it. I feel my ability is under attack and become defensive (防御的) right away. But then I see that my anger comes from always pushing myself to be perfect and being afraid of others’ bad words. Deep down, I feel tired and the sense of unfairness (不公平) is killing me. It may be hard for some to understand how the feeling of not being valued can drain those people who get energy from knowing their efforts are valued. Knowing this about myself, I become more aware of my reactions and try to respond to people more calmly when they offer criticism (批评), which turns out to draw me closer to others. Therefore, when you’re triggered, keep breathing deeply and cool down. Think about what just happened calmly by bringing yourself closer to truth and think about how other people might feel about things. Overreactions sometimes happen when we get over-focused on ourselves and our own emotions. Remember, no one gets a perfect life.
If you aren’t totally aware of what your triggers are, it might help to reflect on the past week and all the times when something makes you sad. Understand the things that bother you the most and take action.
So when you get annoyed over little things, take a moment to think calmly about what triggers you and try the above tips. By practicing, you can surely hold your temper when you are about to get mad next time. And one day you might find yourself among a closer circle.
33.Who probably shares the same emotional trigger as the writer?
A.Lily, who overreacted when she heard bad comments on her report.
B.Peter, who overreacted when his classmates joked about his parents.
C.Ann, who overreacted when she was invited to play the game she hated.
D.Mike, who overreacted when someone ran into him and refused to say “sorry”.
34.What does the word “drain” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Look forward. B.Lose heart. C.Improve oneself. D.Keep practising.
35.Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?
A.It’s necessary to overreact sometimes because it can make people feel calm.
B.It’s common for people who care more about those around them to overreact.
C.Avoiding criticism is helpful for people to keep calm and prevent overreaction.
D.Finding emotional triggers helps manage overreactions and improve relationships.
36.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Overreaction: A Guide to Perfect Emotional Control.
B.Overreaction: A Terrible Way to Deal with Criticism.
C.Overreaction: Knowing Triggers and Finding Calm.
D.Overreaction: Managing Anger and Preventing Stress.

There was a boy outside the door, with a large letter in his hand. (He was dressed like a boy, but his face was very like a fish, Alice thought.) The Fish-Boy knocked at the door, and a second later a large plate came flying out of an open window.
“A letter for the Duchess (公爵夫人),” the Fish-Boy shouted. He pushed the letter under the door and went away.
Alice went up to the door and knocked but there was a lot of noise inside and nobody answered. So she opened the door and walked in.
She found herself in a kitchen, which was full of smoke. There was a very angry cook by the fire, and in the middle of the room sat the Duchess, holding a screaming baby. Every few minutes a plate crashed (撞击) to the floor. There was also a large cat, which was sitting on a chair and grinning (咧嘴笑) from ear to ear.
“Please,” Alice said politely to the Duchess, “Why does your cat grin like that?”
“It’s a Cheshire (柴郡) Cat,” said the Duchess. “That’s why.”
“I didn’t know that cats could grin,” said Alice.
“Well, you don’t know much,” said the Duchess. Another plate crashed to the floor and Alice jumped. “Here!” the Duchess went on. “You can hold the baby for a bit if you like. The Queen has invited me to play croquet (槌球), and I must go and get ready.” She pushed the baby into Alice’s arms and hurried out of the room.
“Oh, the poor little thing!” said Alice, looking at the baby, which had a very strange face. She took it outside into the wood and walked around under the trees. Then the baby began to make strange noises, and Alice looked into its face again. Its eyes were really very small for a baby, and its nose now looked very like the nose of a pig.

Everyone feels afraid sometimes. Brave people are not people who never feel fear. 41
Some think brave people are born that way. They think brave people never worry or doubt. But this is not true. Being brave is acting through fear. It’s choosing to try when we want to stop. 42 It’s standing up when we want to sit down.
Life is full of things we can’t control. 43 Some days are good, while some days are hard. Being brave doesn’t mean knowing everything will be OK. Being brave means trying even when we’re not sure.
44 When we’re scared but still take one small step, that’s courage. When we fail but try again, that’s courage. When we say “I need help”, that is courage, too.
We don’t need to do big things to be brave. Every time we face something hard instead of running away, we’re being brave. 45
Remember—feeling afraid doesn’t mean we’re not brave. What makes us brave is what we do when we feel afraid. Just take one small step, then another. That’s how courage works.
A.We all have courage inside us.
B.We never know what will happen next.
C.Each time we do this, we grow stronger.
D.It’s speaking when we want to stay quiet.
E.They know everything and never worry or doubt.
F.They are those who keep going even when they are scared.
【答案】41.F 42.D 43.B 44.A 45.C

42.根据文章第二段“It’s choosing to try when we want to stop.(它是当我们想停止时选择尝试。)”及后句“It’s standing up when we want to sit down.(它是当我们想坐下时站起来。)” D“It’s speaking when we want to stay quiet.(当我们想保持安静时,它却是说话。)”
43.根据文章第三段“Life is full of things we can’t control.(生活充满了我们无法控制的事情。)”可知,此处应表达未来的不确定性,与后文“Some days are good, while some days are hard.(有些日子很好,而有些日子很难。)” 选项B“We never know what will happen next.(我们永远不知道接下来会发生什么。)”
44.根据文章第四段“When we’re scared but still take one small step, that’s courage.(当我们害怕但仍然迈出一小步时,那就是勇气。)” A“We all have courage inside us.(我们内心都有勇气。)”
45.根据文章第五段“Every time we face something hard instead of running away, we’re being brave.(每次我们面对困难而不是逃跑时,我们就是勇敢的。)” C“Each time we do this, we grow stronger.(每次我们这样做,我们都会变得更强大。)”

46.have grown 47.needs 48.faster 49.will face 50.including 51.valuable 52.unable 53.decisions 54.to do 55.healthily
故填have grown。
根据前文“the more... the...”
故填will face。

故填to do。

John, a British teacher at Nanjing Normal University (NNU), has practiced Chinese calligraphy for over 25 years. The seeds of his China journey were sown when he joined a program for East Asian Art at London University in 1997. Back then, brushes and ink were not easy to get. Learning Chinese writing meant copying model books and using rice paper. He would practice a single stroke for hours to understand its beauty. “In those days, it was a real challenge,” he said.
In 2006, with a high score in the official Chinese language test, he won a scholarship for a summer program at Beijing Language and Culture University. After finishing the study program, John was offered a Nanjing-based job as an art researcher. In 2008, the year Beijing succeeded in hosting the Summer Olympic Games, he got married. In the next year, he started to teach art at NNU.
Life in Nanjing has been a wonderful adventure, especially as a witness to the great achievements China has made. It has offered him many chances for personal growth. Today, thanks to high-speed broadband and 5G, he can connect with students at NNU’s partner universities in the UK, France or Mexico while riding on the Nanjing subway. “When you open your eyes to these great projects, it is impossible not to want to be part of them or at least support them somehow,” he said.
Although he was busy on teaching days, John applied for a full-time scholarship at the China Academy of Art. In 2022, at 44, he got his Ph.D.in fine arts. “I am quite interested in seal carving, and I know that China is quickly becoming the leader in traditional art research. So, I always write my articles in this area,” he said.
“There is always time to follow your dreams unless you decide to give up,” he said. “Taking on seemingly impossible challenges and helping those around you are what makes life worth living.”

Wang’s favourite interview was with a photographer. “I used to think being a photographer was cool, but now I realize they face many challenges. For example, they have to talk with different people and keep an eye on the weather. One of the biggest challenges is the awful weather. So I think the job isn’t easy,” the photographer said.
Such interviews don’t disappoint (使失望) students because there are still some happy and exciting things at work. “We want to show the beauty in every profession,” said Zhao Yajie. “We believe work should be about love. And we hope the activity can help students understand that.”

67.How did John learn Chinese writing in London?
