Recently, a popular Chinese cartoon movie Eight Immortals has won high praise from young viewers. It brings a new and special story about the traditional Chinese legend. Different from the old story “Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea”, this movie shows how eight ordinary people grow into real heroes.
In the movie, a terrible disaster hits the world. A precious magic treasure is lost, which causes great natural disasters and breaks the balance between heaven and earth. At first, the eight main characters are just common people living at the bottom of society. They are poor, imperfect and even have small selfish ideas. Some want to make money, while others hope to change their poor lives.
By chance, the eight people meet each other on a mysterious island. They form a team and even pretend to be immortals at the very beginning. They are not powerful at all and have no magic skills. However, they choose to face the great danger because of their kindness and sense of responsibility. They gradually give up their own small interests and decide to save local people in trouble.
During the long and difficult journey, they face countless challenges and failures. They once doubted themselves and even wanted to give up. But they finally learn to trust each other and work together as a team. They overcome difficulties with courage and wisdom, instead of magic power. Their spirits inspire thousands of audiences.

①Every year, billions of migrating birds fly thousands of miles to reach their seasonal homes. But when birds start these long journeys, how do they know where they’re going?
②In fact, birds use different clues to stay in the right direction. Some of these are familiar to us, while others are still a mystery to humans. Sight and smell are two basic clues that birds use to find their way. If birds have already migrated once, they’ll likely remember familiar landmarks, such as rivers and mountain ranges. Birds that migrate over water, however, have fewer landmarks to guide them. In these situations, they might depend more on their sense of smell. One study found that when researchers blocked the noses of Scopoli’s shearwaters, these seabirds could still fly over land but lost their way when flying over water.
③Birds can also use the sun and stars as guides. To do this, birds that fly during the day use a “sun compass”, which connects their view of the sun’s position in the sky with their internal sense of the time of day. By putting these two pieces of information together, birds can figure out which direction they’re heading.
④However, many birds actually migrate at night, which means that the position of the sun is of little use to them. In this case, birds depend on the position of the stars to find their way. They use this “star compass” by learning the position of the stars around the celestial pole, which is roughly marked by Polaris, known as the North Star.
⑤But what if the sky is cloudy, and birds can’t see the sun, stars or any landmarks? That’s when their more amazing senses come into play. Birds can find their way even without the sun or stars, partly thanks to a sense called magnetoreception (磁感知). This sense allows them to feel Earth’s magnetic fields.
⑥It’s a bit like how we use our eyes to see during the day, but at night, we might use our hands to feel our way around a dark room. Birds use different senses at different times, too. Understanding how these senses work will be very important for protecting birds in the future.
37. How does the writer begin the article?
A. By describing a scene. B. By asking a question.
C. By giving an example. D. By telling a story.
38. From the research on Scopoli’s shearwaters, we can learn that ________.
A. seabirds always lose their way without landmarks
B. blocking seabirds’ ears makes them lose direction
C. land is the only place where seabirds can fly safely
D. birds’ sense of smell plays a role in their migration
39. Which of the following shows the correct structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
40. Why does the writer mention humans’ ways of finding directions?
A. To show that humans have much better senses than birds.
B. To explain that humans need more tools to get directions.
C. To tell that humans and birds share the same living habits.
D. To help readers understand how birds use different senses.

It was said that he could lift a heavy bronze pot with his own hands. In a famous battle, Xiang Yu led his soldiers across a river to help an ally (盟友). There is no way back!” His soldiers fought with all their strength, and they won a great victory.
However, Xiang Yu was sometimes too proud and didn’t take good advice. In the end, Xiang Yu lost the war. At his saddest moment, he chose to end his own life by the Wu River.
Today, many people still respect Xiang as a true hero. They think highly of his courage and truthfulness. People call him the “Hegemon King of Western Chu (西楚霸王)”. His spirit and story make people feel strong, just as the crowds in Suqian showed when they welcomed their hero home.

1. You should keep your bedroom in good ________, or your mom will be angry.
A. order B. challenge C. standard D. kindness
【答案】A
根据“keep your bedroom in good...”及“or your mom will be angry”可知,此处指保持卧室整洁,固定短语“in good order”意为“井然有序”。应填order。
2. Not only Liu Hao but also his team ________ high standards for the high-speed-railway project.
A. sets B. set C. are setting D. is set
【答案】A
not only... but also...
3. Friendship is ______ wine. The longer we keep it, the tastier it will be.
A. as soon as B. as good as C. as well as D. as long as
as soon as一……就……;as good as和……一样好;as well as和……一样好;as long as只要,一样长。根据“Friendship is…wine.”

A. that B. this C. it D. them
that那个;this这个;it它;them它们。
5. The young artist had a clear dream and great talent. He believed that nothing could ________ to achieve his goals.
A. lose his way B. stand in his way C. make his way D. push his way
【答案】B

lose his way迷路;stand in his way阻碍他;make his way前往;push his way挤过去。结合前句“had a clear dream and great talent”,可知此处表达没有事物可以阻碍他实现目标,stand in his way符合语境。
6. Everyone may ________ hard times in life, but keeping brave and positive will help solve problems finally.
A. go through B. put through C. look through D. run through
【答案】A

Dear Mike,
I feel really unhappy recently.
First, because of the heavy school work, I can hardly have time to exercise and relax. What’s worse, my parents keep nagging (唠叨) about something like homework and exams. I feel so tired that I just avoid talking to them.
In addition (此外), I am the monitor in my class. However, when I try to hold class activities, my classmates aren’t as helpful as I’d like them to be. I think maybe they think I’m too serious. I want to be funny, but I’m not!
What can I do? Can you help me?

Dear Bob,
Thank you for writing this letter to me. I hope I can offer you some useful suggestions.
It’s true that study comes first to a ninth grader, while health matters more. You’d better make plans for your schoolwork and manage your time better so that you can have more time for your hobbies and sports. Anyway, it is your parents who care about you most. They just don’t know how to express their love. Sharing your real thoughts and feelings with them is of great help to your relationship.
To be honest, working as the monitor of a class is really a challenging job, because sometimes you do need to depend on others or worry about what others are thinking about or doing. However, you are supposed to learn to work with others in a wise way. What’s more, you can talk to your teacher and find out ways to make your classmates take part more willingly and actively. As for being serious or funny, everyone has a different sense of humor. If you aren’t a good joke-teller, you can be a great listener or show some other talents. It’s OK to just be yourself.
Hope my advice is of some help to you.
Yours sincerely,
Mike
