跨学科A smartphone is a phone that combines(合并)things like a
phone, clock, camera and computer into one small device. It can make calls
like a phone, but it can also access the Internet.Using the Internet,
smartphones can play music, take pictures and videos, and check the weather
in cities all around the world. But how did the age of smartphones begin?
In 1992,the company IBM created the first smartphone. It was a phone
that included a program for writing notes to remember things. It also had a
program for showing people dates and times of planned events. This early
smartphone could send emails as well. However, this phone never became
very popular. For one thing,it was too expensive for many people.
Other companies then started to work on new phone technology.Companies
such as Nokia and Ericsson next introduced their smartphones to the market. In
fact,it was the Ericsson company that created the word "smartphone"in 1997.
However, these smartphones also achieved little success.
In 1999,the Blackberry was introduced. This was the first smartphone
that was widely used by phone users. The Blackberry was a phone with a
keyboard that made it easy to use the Internet and send text messages and
emails. The Blackberry was popular with people working in business or in
technology. But common phone users still didn't buy many of them.
In 2007,Apple introduced the iPhone.Not long after that,in 2008,
Google introduced the Android phone to the world. These new smartphones
from Apple and Google were marketed to all phone users. The goal was to
make the smartphone easy to use and something everyone would want.Just as
hoped, less than 10 years later, there were over 2 billion smartphone users.
Not only is it safe to say that smartphones are taking over the world, but there
will soon be a time when people can't remember when phones only made calls.

What do you do when you want a cold drink? You probably get a drink
from your fridge. But people did not have fridges before the early 1900s.How
did they keep things cool before then?
In the past,it was difficult to keep food cold.Warm food spoils quickly.
Before fridges were available, people used to get sick a lot or even die from
eating spoiled food.People tried many different ways to keep things cold.
However, none of these ways was perfect.
13
What was a better way?Putting food on ice.In 1000 BCE,people in
China collected ice and snow. Then they dug holes under their homes and
filled them with the ice and snow. After that, they put their food in the holes.
In many countries, people continued to do this for about 2,000 years.
There are a few problems with this way.First, ice and snow are not
available everywhere.Second,ice melts().An American businessman
named Frederick Tudor solved these problems. He wanted to carry ice to hot
places. In the early 1800s,he sent a ship full of ice from Boston,
Massachusetts,to the island of Martinique.Almost all of the ice melted.
After that happened,Tudor realized that he had to find a way to keep the ice
frozen(冷冻的).In the end,he tried putting sawdust(锯屑)between the
pieces of ice.It worked!
People used to work hard to keep their food and drinks cold. Now,it's
much easier. The next time you want a cold drink, imagine your life without a
fridge.
()9.What does the underlined word"spoils"in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Becomes cold.
B.Turns green.

with a wide smile. The weather was perfect for testing his new invention-
Umbrella Hat.He could hardly wait to see whether it could keep the rain off.
He walked along the street. The hat worked.

said.
The boy laughed,"Will anyone wear that stupid thing?"Todd threw the
hat onto the ground and then ran off.
Garth picked up his Umbrella Hat from the ground with tears."Maybe
Todd was right. In reality, who would ever need my invention?"He lowered
his head and said to himself.
Suddenly,he raised his head and saw a lady looking at him."I was just
leaving my house when I saw you and those boys. Are you okay?"Then she
saw the broken Umbrella Hat and asked,"Er...what's that?"

最佳选项,其中有一个多余的选项。
Albert Einstein once said,"I have no special talents.I am only
passionately curious."The greatest inventions in history would be impossible
without curiosity.Curiosity can bring new discoveries.17.
He was
drawn to electricity and had a deep curiosity about its nature. He did lots of
research to try to understand it.For example,he flew a kite during a storm.
His curiosity led him to invent the lightning rod. This invention protects
buildings from lightning.
18.
Just look at Wan Hu,the Ming Dynasty pioneer of space
exploration. He was so curious about space that he invented a "flying chair"!
He lost his life while testing this invention.Despite the failure, his curiosity
gave future explorers ideas.People learnt from his example and created safer
ways to explore space.
But curiosity is more than just taking risks.19.
Zhang Heng,
a Chinese scientist and inventor, was curious about the world:how did
everything in the world move?He spent years studying the sky and the earth.
Finally,he drew China's first star map and invented the first earthquake
detector. His curiosity continues to influence scientists today.
As Jacques Cousteau said,"What is a scientist after all?It is a curious
man looking through a keyhole, the keyhole of nature, trying to know what's
going on."Curiosity is the key.20.
A.Many inventors got their great ideas from small daily problems.
B.It opens one door after another for us to discover a new world
C.Benjamin Franklin is a great example.
D.It also drives people towards certain goals.
E.Curiosity can also make people brave.

Water is important to us.However, around one in three people
worldwide don't have safe drinking water near their homes.Every day,800
children under the age of five die as a result of water problems.
Deepika Kurup, now 23,had a happy childhood in the United States.
But her Indian-born parents took her to visit their home country every year.It
didn't take long for the girl to realize how different it was from the United
States. When she was 14 years old,she noticed one day that some children
around her age there were collecting water that was obviously()dirty.
“They really shocked me,”Kurup says..“That was the only water that
they could get to drink and to cook their food with!"
Kurup's father is an engineering professor().Unsurprisingly,the
girl became interested in science at a young age.She even has a small lab in
her father's garage. After realizing that millions of people around the world
have to live without clean water,Kurup wanted to try to solve the problem.
Kurup ended up creating an affordable(负担得起的)and effective water
purification system. With the help of sunlight, the system can greatly reduce the
number of bacteria()present in water. The invention has won many awards.
But over the years,Kurup gradually realized that her system alone wasn't
enough to solve the world's water problems. These problems are just too
complex. There should be many other ways. Some might work better than hers
in some situations. The girl hopes others will come up with great ideas.
Meanwhile,Kurup has been upgrading ()her water purification
system.Different communities have different needs, and she would like to see
more people really benefit from her invention.
41.How did Kurup feel when she saw children collecting dirty water in India?
42.Where did Kurup do her science experiments when she was young?

water with the help of?
