Brandy was an old dog. When her owner died, the dog stayed near the house and waited for her owner to return. Some of the neighbors left food out for Brandy. As they thought the dog was friendly, they weren’t very concerned (担心的) about Brandy.
One day, Brandy walked into the neighbor’s yard and began playing with 18-month-old Adam. The young mother didn't like the dirty dog at first. But seeing her son having fun playing with her, she decided to let Brandy stay.
One afternoon, the boy’s mother left Adam in the yard to play while she answered the phone. When she returned, he was gone. The mother was scared and called the police. They looked for Adam for six hours, but didn't find him.
Then someone said he had heard barking (狗叫声) coming from the woods. So they all rushed to the woods. Adam was fast asleep against a tree. Brandy was keeping Adam there while one of her own legs dangled over (悬垂) a deep hole.
Brandy had followed Adam when he walked away. Seeing him in danger, she'd held him safely for all those hours. Adam’s mother was so grateful that Brandy spent the rest of her days with them. In Brandy’s honor, Adam’s mother founded (创办) Pets Alive, a pet-rescue (宠物救援) center in New York. She can’t save every animal, but she knows that if someone had put that old dog to sleep, she could have easily lost her only son.

Slavery (奴隶制) was one of the darkest periods in American history. It cannot be ignored (忽视). This term, we are reading a novel called The Longest Memory by British author Fred D’Aguiar. Its story is told through the eyes of many different people. From their narration (叙述), we can see what society looked like during the period before the American Civil War.
The Longest Memory tells the story of a brave and wise young slave, Chapel, who falls in love with the daughter of a plantation owner (种植园主人). They decide to go to the north, where black men can marry white women. However, the boy’s father, White Chapel, doesn’t agree with him and causes him to be caught. Chapel is then whipped (鞭打) to death.
Why does White Chapel report his son’s plan to the plantation owner? This is one thing that confuses many readers. But as we understand each character in depth, we can find it out. White Chapel teaches young slaves to follow their owners. So his owner respects him a lot. He starts to think that slaves can live comfortably as long as they listen to the plantation owner.
This thought is based on (基于) the idea that slavery will never end. However, Chapel is educated. He sees a more colourful world in the books he reads and wants to be free. He represents (代表) the change for the future, which his dad fears. White Chapel’s thought might be a good way for slaves to protect themselves. But that doesn’t change the fact that slavery is inhumane (不人道的) and must end. Pioneers like Chapel should be encouraged.
9. The story of The Longest Memory is based on ________.
A. slavery before the American Civil War B. the American Civil War
C. the First World War D. the American Revolution
10. Chapel and the daughter of a plantation owner decide to go to the north because ________.
A. they want to leave Chapel’s father B. they want to make more money
C. they can get married there D. they want to live with Chapel’s father
11. According to the writer, why does White Chapel report his son?
A. Because he wants to protect his son and the girl.
B. Because he thinks slaves should follow their master’s orders.
C. Because he is worried that his son will be punished by the owner.
D. Because he doesn’t want to be separated from his son.
12. What’s the structure of the passage?
A. ①②/③④ B. ①②③/④ C. ①/②③④ D. ①/②③/④
D
Do you think automated (自动化的) kitchens only exist in science fiction shows like Star Trek? Well, think again! Nowadays, robots are already being used to do many things in the kitchen, like frying chicken, making pizzas, and preparing salads. And artificial intelligence (AI) can even create new recipes based on the ingredients available in a kitchen. There are also more advanced ideas being developed to make high-quality restaurant kitchens automated.
There are some good things about AI kitchens. For example, cooks don’t have to do boring jobs like peeling potatoes or standing in one place for hours. This saves time and lets people do more important things. AI can also provide different kinds of special diets and tastes to meet personal needs.
However, there are also problems. Cooking is not just about making food. It’s a good activity that helps people communicate and express themselves. If we don’t need humans to cook anymore, these good things might vanish. Family relationships might not be as good without the time spent together in the kitchen.
Moreover, the kitchen is like a science lab at home. It’s important for kids to learn about materials, chemistry, and how to solve problems through cooking.
We also have to think about cultural problems. Sometimes, AI might change traditional recipes and cooking methods because it doesn’t understand cultural details well. This could make the dishes less diverse. If we rely too much on technology for cooking, the food might taste the same. It’s similar to how AI art images look alike in different apps.
In conclusion, while new technologies bring convenience, they also have a price. We need to think about the possible problems they might cause in our society, especially when it comes to something as important as food in our daily lives.
13. How does the writer start the text?
A. By telling a story. B. By showing a fact.
C. By giving an example. D. By asking a question.
14. The underlined word “vanish” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.
A. reduce B. disappear C. control D. survive
15. What can we infer from the text?
A. People will never use automated kitchens in the future.
B. Kids can learn a lot of useful skills through cooking.
C. AI can completely take the place of humans in all cultures.
D. The writer thinks technology only brings good changes.
16. What is the writer’s attitude (态度) toward the widespread use of AI kitchens?
A. Fully angry. B. Strongly against. C. Careful and thoughtful. D. Uninterested.
