Dr Terry Cordon is a psychologist who gives advice on your problems.
Ask Dr Cordon!
Dear Dr Cordon,
I am writing to you for advice about a problem I’m having at school.
I’m a new student at this school. When I started here two months ago, I didn’t know anybody.
A group of kids are bullying me. They don’t hit or kick me, but they say unkind things to me. You see, I’m short for my age. On my first day, one of them said something mean about my height and his friends all laughed. This has gone on ever since. And because of this, other kids are avoiding me. I feel lonely, and now I’m scared to go to school.
What can I do? How can I make this stop?

/skeəd/ adj. 害怕的、畏惧的
Dear Jimmy,
Thank you for writing to me about your problem. That took courage.
The first thing I want to say is: Bullying is not okay.
What should you do? You should talk to your parents about this. You don’t have to go through it alone. Tell them what has been happening.
/ˈkʌrɪdʒ/ n. 勇气、胆量

And with their help, report it to a teacher or another adult at your school. The school needs to know that this is happening. The school should act to put a stop to this behaviour. School should be a place where everyone feels safe and welcome.
This next piece of advice may seem hard. Try to make some friends. Most kids would agree that bullying is wrong, but they may not feel brave enough to speak up. Find someone who seems kind and just start by saying “hi”. This could be the start of a conversation. It’s good to have someone to talk to.

Here’s an important thing for you to know: Often it’s the bully who feels weak, not the person being bullied. Bullies behave badly towards others to make themselves feel strong. Having this knowledge proves to be powerful.
Jimmy, I feel for you and hope my advice helps you. Remember, you are not doing anything wrong: It’s the bully.
All the best to you!
