The 15th National Games, held from November 9 to 21, 2025, was co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao for the first time in history. Here is something about the games.
The medal for the 15th National Games, named “Tong Xin Yue”, symbolizes the united spirit of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. On the other side of the medal, Chinese white dolphin “Xi Yang Yang” is holding a torch.
Where was the flame (火焰) of the Games from? People sent “Haima” to the bottom of the South China Sea. There, it collected CH₄ and turned it into flammable (易燃的) ice. Then the ice was lit under the sea by the power of the sunlight and taken out of water.
The performances of the opening ceremony were also eye-catching. In the opening ceremony, dancers performed with robots playing a Chinese traditional musical instrument. Lingnan culture, including the big Aoyu fish lantern, was also shown wonderfully by using VR and AR technology.

Along the coast of Jiangsu Province, there is a wetland called Tiaozini. About ten years ago, the government planned to use this land for factories. But Yancheng, the city where Tiaozini is, faced a hard choice: build factories for money or protect the wetland. They chose the environment. They spent money to make it a World Natural Heritage site (世界自然遗产地), not selling the land to factories.
In 2019, Yancheng’s wetland became China’s first coastal wetland to be named a World Natural Heritage site. Tiaozini is the most important part of it. Today, 64 endangered bird species are protected there. The wetland is an important stopover for birds on their long migration journeys. Every year, millions of birds rest, eat, and give birth to their young on these mudflats.
So far, scientists have recorded 414 bird species here. Among them, 22 species are under China’s first-class state protection, and 71 are second-class. The most amazing one is the spoon-billed sandpiper—a very rare bird. Nearly half of the world’s remaining 500 of these birds depend on Tiaozini.
The wetland has tidal forests, salt marshes, and wet open land. All of these offer plenty of food for the birds. At the same time, the local area has kept developing. Tiaozini has become a model for keeping a balance between the economy and the environment.
“This is so much more than a success story of protection. It shows us a way to the future,” said Jia Yifei, a researcher at Beijing Forestry University. “When we take care of nature, both nature and people can do well.”
4. What choice did Yancheng have to make about ten years ago?
A. To build more schools or more hospitals.
B. To build factories or protect the wetland.
C. To sell the wetland to other countries.
5. What does the underlined word “stopover” in Paragraph 2 mean?

B. To explain how birds migrate.
C. To show a successful wetland protection story.

Canadian violinist Adrian Anantawan is changing the music industry for the better.
Anantawan was born without his right hand and most of his forearm, but he didn’t let that stop him from enjoying music. The violin was his instrument of choice. When he was 10, his family asked engineers to build a customized device to help him play the violin. “From the very first note that I played, I loved it. I decided to learn it,” he said.
Anantawan has spent lots of time learning and playing the violin and now he is a great violinist. He has performed at the White House, the Vancouver and Athens Olympics (雅典奥运会), and many other important events.
Anantawan has also turned his attention to voluntary work. He wants to make music more accessible. In Toronto, he helped start the Virtual Chamber Music Initiative at the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital — where he was first fitted with his own instrument as a child. The project brings together researchers, musicians, doctors, and educators to create musical instruments for young people with disabilities.
Anantawan’s work is clearly more than an interest. He considers it a welcome responsibility. “My duty and job is to use this platform to show others what a person with a disability can do,” he said. “I hope someone can be moved or encouraged by my story and work to make a change in their lives. A lot of times, we let fear get in the way of trying anything. For me, my story has always been a result of just trying something, being OK with failure, and then just seeing what the results are. In my case, it’s really just beautiful, expressive music.”
8. Which of the following is true?
A. Anantawan was born without his right arm.
B. Anantawan hasn’t performed in the USA.
C. Anantawan has been to Greece.
9. What was the project in Toronto started for ?
A. To make more people enjoy music.
B. To play the violin for young people with disabilities.
C. To produce musical instruments for young people with disabilities.
10. Why does Anantawan share his story with others?
A. He wants to try something different.
B. He encourages people like him.
C. He shows his interest in music.
11. What can we learn from Anantawan?
A. Get into the habit of enjoying the music.
B. Never let fear stop you from trying.
C. Keep interested in everything you want to do.

The White Cliffs of Dover are located in Dover, in southeast England. Every year, lots of people come to visit them, making them a very popular destination for tourists.
The White Cliffs are mostly made of a soft, white rock called chalk (白垩). It is a type of limestone (石灰岩) that was created from the tiny skeletons (骨骼) of sea life. Over millions of years, these tiny skeletons piled up and were pressed together to form the chalk rock. Later, movements of the Earth pushed this rock up above the sea, creating the white cliffs we see today.
These cliffs and the land around them are a special place for wildlife. Many types of plants grow there, including some rare ones that like the chalky soil. You might see beautiful wildflowers blooming in the spring and summer. The cliffs are also home to many animals. For example, the peregrine falcon (游隼), one of the fastest birds in the world, can sometimes be seen hunting near the cliffs.
However, the White Cliffs are always changing because of natural erosion (侵蚀). Wind, rain, and the waves slowly wear away the soft rock. Over time, pieces of the cliffs can break off and fall into the sea. While erosion changes the shape of the cliffs, it also helps to keep them looking white, as new layers (层) of chalk are exposed.
Despite this, the cliffs never lose their charm. To fully enjoy them, head to South Foreland Lighthouse, which is located on the cliffs and offers amazing views. If you have more time, there are many other interesting places around the White Cliffs to visit, such as Fan Bay Deep Shelter and Dover Castle.
12. What’s the main idea of paragraph 2?
A. What are the White Cliffs?
B. How did the White Cliffs come into being?
C. How long did it take to form the White Cliffs?
13. Why are there so many types of plants living on the White Cliffs?
A. The chalky soil is suitable for the plants.
B. The plants can bloom in spring and summer.
C. Some birds bring the seeds of the plants there.
14. What makes the White Cliffs white?
A. Human activities.
B. The natural erosion.
C. The movement of the earth.
15. What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To give tips for travelers.
B. To attract visitors to Dover.
C. To describe the views of the White Cliffs.

Addicted to Your Phone? Try These Tips
Nearly twenty years after smartphones appeared, we have a big problem: many people can’t put their phones down. Schools are banning phones in classrooms because they make students perform worse academically. ____16____ They often tell children to use phones less, but they don’t follow the same rules themselves. So what can we do? Some experts give useful ways to help us use phones wisely:
First, assess (评估) the problem. Using phones a lot is not the same as being addicted (上瘾的). ____17____ If phone use hurts your friendships, study or work, it becomes a problem. For example, if you spend too much time scrolling (刷屏) instead of studying, you need to make a change.
Second, make a family media plan. Parents should set clear rules for the whole family. ____18____ Children sleep better without phones in the bedroom. Parents must follow the rules too. Rules can be strict on school days and a little loose on weekends.
Third, care more about content than time. In the past, people only cared about how many hours they used on phones. But not all screen time is the same. Using phones for study or work is fine. ____19____ Stopping using these apps is more important than counting minutes.
Fourth, replace scrolling with healthy activities. When you put down your phone, do something meaningful. You can try handwork like sewing (缝纫), drawing, or helping others. ____20____ Phones are useful, but we should control them, not be controlled by them.
A. For example, no phones at mealtime or bedtime.
B. However, adults often have the same problem.
C. These activities help you enjoy real life and talk with people around you.
D. It is not easy for everyone to stay away from their phones.
E. But some apps about short videos are like junk food—they just make you keep scrolling.
F. You need to check if phone use is causing problems in your life.

“Camping in the museum” has become more and more popular in China, especially during the summer. It allows students to explore historical relics (文物) at night, offering an exciting journey different from daytime tours.
At the Chengdu Natural History Museum, children can take on the role of “dinosaur (恐龙) explorers” at night. They carefully dig for dinosaur bones (骨骼), make bone-like models and use simple maps to find hidden dinosaur coins. After that, they can set up tents nearby. In Luoyang, some museums offer history-themed (主题) overnight stays. Travelers can dress up in historical costumes, eat dinner in the museum halls and camp outdoors near relics. They can also listen to people tell old stories about the things on show, and feel the great beauty of history.
Compared with quick daytime trips, each of these activities provides a full experience. Daytime crowds make it hard to focus, but at night, with fewer people, you can look closely and learn more deeply. However, safety is a top concern for these overnight events. The museums solve this by adding more workers. Also, kids under 10 are asked to stay with their parents. Some museums prepare first-aid boxes, and they also set up places where people can ask for help quickly.
These programs not only make museums less crowded but also provide a fun way of learning. Perhaps your next school trip will be a night with dinosaurs.
