五、阅读理解。
Imagine you need to send an important document far away as soon as possible. How would you do it? Chances are that you would use an email or a smartphone app. However, for many people, the answer to that question is the fax machine(传真机).
The first fax machine was invented in 1843 by Alexander Bain. Then in 1964, modern fax machines became widely available. In the 1980s and 1990s, they were considered the fastest and safest way to send information.
With the development of technology, you might think email would have made the fax machine a thing of the past, but you'd be wrong. Fax use continues to grow by more than 12% every year. One explanation is that fax machines are still easier to use for documents that are written by hand. But the real reason for their continued use has to do with security(安全).
Email is convenient, but it can be hacked. This is a danger for governments, hospitals and other organizations. Using a fax machine allows information to go directly from one place to another without needing to be saved on a computer. It can then be kept in a physical location where it's more difficult to steal.
Fax machine technology grew quickly throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and it continues to develop today!

Do you play an instrument? Have you ever made one? Terje Isungset can answer “Yes” to both 26 . Known as the 27 of Ice Music, Terje Isungset makes instruments out of something cool: ice! And he needs low temperatures to keep his instruments in good 28 .
He doesn't use just any 29 things. “Surely you can get perfect ice from factories. But it won't have any beautiful sounds,” Isungset says. He gets all of his ice from the wild. “It's 30 that decides the sound of the instrument,” he says.
Isungset got the idea for ice music more than 20 years ago. “I was asked to do a concert in a frozen waterfall,” he says. “There were no books to read about, and there was 31 on the internet,” he says. “So I had to 32 everything by myself. I tried with different shapes and sizes of ice blocks. I spent hours shaping the ice, improving my designs until I was happy with the results.”
Several years ago, Isungset helped start the Ice Music Festival in Norway. It is 33 in February every year. “As you can imagine, there is a lot of work to do for an ice concert,” Isungset says. “We come to a place, we 34 the ice, and then we build the venue(场地)with it.”
Some of Isungset's instruments are based on common ones, 35 others are dreamed up. “For the festival, I have a goal of trying to invent a new instrument every year,” he says.
What happens when the show is over? “We give everything back to nature,” Isungset says.
