The Little Prince
Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent picture in a book,[1] called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval forest①. It was a picture of a boa constrictor in the act of② swallowing an animal. Here is a copy of the drawing.
In the book it said:“Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole, without chewing it.After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through the six months [2] that they need for digestion.”
I pondered deeply, then, over③ the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in④ making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One.It looked like this:
I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them [3]whether the drawing frightened them.
But they answered:“Frighten? Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?”
My drawing was not a picture of a hat.It was a picture of a boa constrictor [4]digesting an elephant. But [5]since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing:I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, [6]so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to [7] have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like this:
[8]The grown-ups’ response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside⑤ my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to⑥ geography, history, arithmetic and grammar. [9]That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent career as a painter. I had been disheartened by⑦ the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and[10]it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.
[2]that引导定语从句,修饰先行词the six months,that在从句中作宾语。
[10]it作形式主语,动词不定式短语to be always and forever explaining things to them作真正的主语。
2.靓词
(1)masterpiece (Para.4)
(2)tiresome (Para.7)
So then I chose another profession, and learned to pilot airplanes.I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very useful to me. At a glance⑧ I can distinguish China from Arizona⑨. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.
In the course of⑩ this life, I have had a great many encounters with a great many people [11]who have been concerned with⑪ matters of consequence.I have lived a great deal among grown-ups.I have seen them intimately, close at hand⑫. And that hasn’t much improved my opinion of them.
[12]Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me at all clear-sighted, I tried the experiment of showing him my Drawing Number One, which I have always kept. I would try to find out, so, if this was a person of true understanding. But, [13]whoever it was, he, or she, would always say:
“That is a hat.”
Then I would never talk to that person about boa constrictors, or primeval forests, or stars. I would bring myself down to his level.[14]I would talk to him about bridge, and golf, and politics , and neckties. And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to⑬ have met such a sensible man.
(Excerpt from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry)
【释疑难】 [11]who引导定语从句,修饰先行词a great many people。
[12]Whenever引导让步状语从句;who引导定语从句,修饰代词them;which引导非限制性定语从句,修饰先行词Drawing Number One。
[13]whoever
intimately (Para.9)

A
(2026•江苏淮安期中)My birth was a little more dramatic than the standard way a baby enters the world.Within minutes of coming out, I was taken away into another room while doctors gave my parents the difficult news: I was born missing my left hand. This news would come to define the rest of my life, but thanks to a nurse’s intervention telling my parents to treat me normally.I had a relatively normal childhood.I played sports, acted in theater, excelled (出色) in school, participated in student government and had play dates with friends.Despite some stares and polite questions about my limb (肢体) difference, I wasn’t made fun of.
As kids do, I quickly learned to adapt, working around the “missing” hand. One of my earliest memories is my father trying to teach me to tie my shoes. His two handed method wouldn’t work for me, so I figured out a way to do it with one hand.
I started hiding disability on the first day of high school.I was 13, an age when kids are already very self-conscious.I remember getting on the yellow school bus and one of the other kids stared just a little too long at my left arm.The staring worried me in a way it never had before, and I felt a sudden urge to hide my hand, so I impulsively (冲动地) slipped it into my pocket. For the next two decades, I kept my limb difference hidden at all times. From then on, I realized that my missing hand made me hideous and that if people knew about it they would be scared of me and they don’t want to be around me anymore.Honestly, I was terrified that if I exposed my limb difference that people would find me as ugly as I found myself, I felt lonely and scared all the time.
When I was 38 years old, tired of hiding and so lonely, I met someone who convinced me to stop hiding my limb difference. For the first time in my life, I allowed someone to really hold my limb, look at it, take pictures of it, touch it, love it — love me.From that point on, I saw my limb difference as something unique and beautiful about me, something that should be shown, not hidden.
Unhiding my hand made everything in my life better. It was a transformational experience, and through that process, I learned to love myself. This ability to love myself changed how I lived my entire life, and it made me happier.

Are you sleeping restlessly, forgetting little things, and feeling depressed and lonely? Don’t worry. We’ve all been there. You’re probably just stressed out.
Stress isn’t always a bad thing. It can be handy for a burst of extra energy and focus, like when you’re playing a competitive sport, or have to speak in public.
But when it’s continuous, the kind of situation most of us face daily, it actually begins to change your brain.Chronic (长期的) stress, like being overworked or having arguments at home frequently, can affect brain size, its structure, and how it functions, right down to the level of your genes.
A level of cortisol (皮质醇) rise, electric signals in your hippocampus (海马体), the part of the brain associated with learning, memories, and stress control, decline. When the hippocampus weakens, so does your ability to control your stress.
That’s not all, though.Cortisol can literally cause your brain to get smaller in size.Too much of it results in the shrinking of the part of your brain that regulates behaviors like concentration, decision-making, judgment, and social interaction.
It also leads to fewer new brain cells being made in the hippocampus. This means chronic stress might make it harder for you to learn and remember things and also set the stage for more serious mental problems, like depression and eventually Alzheimer’s disease.
It’s not all bad news, though. There are many ways to change what cortisol does to your stressed brain. The most powerful weapons are exercise and getting into deep thoughts, which involves breathing deeply and being aware and focused on your surroundings. Both of these activities decrease your stress and increase the size of the hippocampus, and therefore your memory improves.
So don’t feel defeated by the pressures of daily lives.Get control of your stress before it takes control of you.

A.When making decisions.
B.When delivering a speech.
C.When being in deep thought.
D.When forgetting little things.
6.What may influence your genes’ level according to the text?( )

(2026•山东潍坊期中) Sometimes in our lives, we face this problem: both loved ones and strangers can annoy us.At home, we’ve had to put up with children screaming during online meetings and family members being on the computer all the time. 9.
Kindness seems like a distant memory. The ability to live peacefully with annoying housemates or neighbors seems more difficult than ever. 10. If we treat kindness as a skill and make it a daily practice, it will come more easily over time.
11. Loving-Kindness Meditation (LKM), which traces its roots back to early Buddhism, helps us find compassion for one another even during trying times. This meditation asks us to send thoughts of loving-kindness to our loved ones, then to acquaintances (people you don’t know very well), and finally to difficult people.Over time, our unkind thoughts are replaced with more open, accepting ones.Anger is replaced with love, or at least kindness.
Donald Altman, a psychotherapist from Portland, Oregon, says LKM helps us recognize that we are all vulnerable and have been hurt. 12.
So how do we practice it? To begin with, Altman suggests finding a quiet place to sit.He says to then imagine a favorite family member or friend sending you the words: “May you be well, happy, and at peace.” After a few minutes, direct the words at yourself: “May I be well, happy, and at peace.” 13. Replace the “I” with the name of a teacher or coach, then a family member or friend, then an acquaintance, and finally an unfriendly person in your life.End the meditation by spreading the blessings to all living beings.
Indeed, we should find our own way to practice LKM — but only if we are prepared to embrace its benefits and extend them to anyone who may need them.
A.The good news is that it isn’t lost.
B.Luckily, we can look to ancient disciplines for guidance.
C.Then, extend the blessing to other people, in order of decreasing fondness.
D.At work, we have had to take the pressure these demanding crate.
E.For that reason, we could all benefit from love’s warm and comforting blessing.
F.You can combine the words with breathing, repeating a phrase of love for yourself.
G.Outside, we have encountered drivers speeding on busy roads and passengers talking loudly on the subway.
A项中的it指代上文的Kindness。
E项中的For that reason指代上文提到的共性。

A Book Review of Robinson Crusoe
Robinson Crusoe is one of the most popular adventure novels by the English author Daniel Defoe, published in 1719. It is the story of Robinson Crusoe, an Englishman who is shipwrecked in a lonely tropical island. He builds himself a hut, grows his own food, and becomes self-sufficient. After 23 years he meets with a group of cannibals and rescues one of their prisoners, a young native whom he calls Friday. They become close friends, and when they are finally rescued four years later, both return to England.
Robinson Crusoe was partly based on the actual deeds of Alexander Selkirk, an 18th-century Scottish sailor who spent almost five years alone on a deserted island. This novel is famous for its lovely details and its expression of belief in man’s ability when left alone in nature.
