Mrs Neidl’s motto that year was, “Try it.We can always paint over it later!” I began to take risks.I had been afraid of failing but suddenly there was no failing — only things to be improved upon.I learned to dip my brush into the paint and confidently create something.

John von Neumann was the oldest of 3 children of a banker, and his
speed of learning new ideas and solving problems stood out early. At
17, his father tried to persuade him not to become a mathematician (数
学家) because he might live a poor life being a mathematician, and he
and his father reached an agreement, and von Neumann went to study
chemistry. In 1926, at 23, he received a degree in chemical
engineering and a Ph.D. in mathematics (数学). From then on,
mathematics provided well enough for him, and he never had to turn to
chemistry.

In 1930, von Neumann visited Princeton University for a year and
then became a professor there. His first book was published in 1932. In
1930, the Institute for Advanced Study was formed, and in 1933 he
became one of the 6 full-time professors in the School of Mathematics
(Einstein was one of the others).
World War Ⅱ (1931-1945) hugely changed von Neumann’s areas
of interest. Until 1940 he had been a great pure (纯粹的)
mathematician. After 1940, he became one of the best mathematicians
who put mathematical theories into practice. During the last part of the

work with computers, and was generally very active in government
service. He received many awards, was president of the American
Mathematical Society and was a member of the Atomic Energy
Commission. He died of cancer in 1957.

(2026•湖南长沙期中) I remember it like it was yesterday. My
freshman year basketball tryouts (选拔赛) had gone surprisingly
well.I completed every pass and earned a spot as a solid bench player
(替补球员).Then this happened — I missed an easy shot totally for
no reason. The next day I got cut from the team.
“Fail fast and fail often.” The startup world is filled with
statements like this.In technology and entrepreneurship (企业家)
circles, failure has become something to chase, not avoid. And science

is starting to back this up.A Nature study found that among scientists and
entrepreneurs, those who ultimately succeeded had actually failed more
often than their less-successful fellows. What set them apart wasn’t luck
or genius; it was their ability to learn and adapt quickly after each
failure.
Sonja Lyubomirsky and Ed Diener, two leading voices in positive
psychology, have shown that people who’ve experienced failure
sometimes report higher levels of long-term well-being than those who

haven’t.Their findings suggest that lasting happiness is fueled less by
external wins, like medals or titles, and more by internal sources:
purpose, meaningful relationships, and personal growth.
How can we pursue purpose without being consumed by the pain of
failure? My suggestion is to rethink purpose, especially “little
purpose”, which is about the process, not the outcome.Say you
dream of becoming a best-selling writer.That’s wonderful.But even if
the book doesn’t make it onto the New York Times list, the act of writing
it, of shaping your story, can still be deeply fulfilling.

Perhaps my basketball setback could have been redefined (重新定
义).Instead of quitting the team entirely, maybe I could have applied
to be the equipment manager.I would have stayed close to the sport I
loved, and found meaning without needing to be a top athlete. When
success isn’t narrowly defined, failure doesn’t close the door.It opens
new ones.In this way, failure truly becomes the new success.
