Nicholas Sparks is an American author and storyteller whose books have consistently been turned into major Hollywood films. Although not all of his books were sold to Hollywood, all have been The New York Times best-sellers. He has sold over 97 million copies worldwide, with over 65 million of them within the United States alone. He lives with his family in North Carolina. He is also considered to be very generous with his money. In 2011, he created the Nicholas Sparks Foundation to make more opportunities available to children from poor families. His foundation, which he started with his wife, creates scholarships for children from low-income families in rural communities. Sparks has had a very successful career, and he owes that to education. “The education I received prepared me for the world I would be facing in the future,” he said. Even though he is worth an estimated 75 million dollars or so, Sparks seems to live the values he presents in his books.

A few months after my son was born, I read Rachel Carson’s essay The Sense of Wonder. Written in 1956, it guides parents to connect children with nature. Carson, though childless, shared warm memories with her nephew — night walks by the sea, rainy forest trips — and told parents they needn’t know every bird or plant to develop a love for nature. Beneath her gentle words lay a quiet warning: we risk losing our wonder for the world as we grow up.
At that time, my family split time between Manhattan and rural Pennsylvania. Living in the city for ten years, my world was filled with cold corners and hard surfaces. But in the countryside, my senses woke up. I noticed golden poplars, colorful newts, and fresh green grass — all bringing vivid color back to my life.
When my son was five months old, I had a terrible car accident on an icy road. The car rolled over, and I escaped unhurt, but the fear stayed with me. I couldn’t drive for months. Every time we passed the accident site, I felt uneasy.
Carson’s words comforted me: “Nature keeps repeating itself — night always turns to day, and winter always turns to spring. This steady cycle is deeply comforting and has a powerful way of healing (治愈) us.” As spring came, birdsong returned, and I slowly found courage again.
One October evening, as we were in our garden, the first snowflakes (雪花) fell softly. My son, barely a year old, sat quietly and watched. I held out my hand, and a snowflake landed on my hand and melted (融化). He looked at me, eyes wide with wonder. At that moment, I understood Carson’s true meaning: nature is not just beauty, but a lasting bond between us. It gives us strength and connects us, even when we feel lost.
24.What is the main purpose of Carson’s essay The Sense of Wonder?
A.To tell stories of her nephew.
B.To warn people of environmental problems.
C.To teach parents to connect kids with nature.
D.To introduce different plants and animals.
25.What can be learned about the author’s life in the city?
A.Her senses were less active there.
B.Her life was colorful and exciting there.
C.She felt close to nature there.
D.She enjoyed living there very much.
26.Why did the author feel uneasy when passing the accident site?
A.She was worried about her son’s safety.
B.The accident left her with fear.
C.She was hurt badly in the accident.
D.She had lost confidence in driving.
27.What does the author want to convey through the text?
A.Life is full of unexpected challenges.
B.Children help adults rediscover nature.
C.Classic essays guide people out of trouble.
D.Nature cures pain and brings spiritual power.
【答案】24.C 25.A 26.B 27.D
根据第二段中“Living in the city for ten years, my world was filled with cold corners and hard surfaces. But in the countryside, my senses woke up.(在城市生活了十年,我的世界充满了冰冷的角落和坚硬的表面。但在乡村,我的感官苏醒了)”可知,作者在城市生活时感官不够活跃,而在乡村才重新唤醒。
26.细节理解题。根据第三段中“I escaped unhurt, but the fear stayed with me. I couldn’t drive for months. Every time we passed the accident site, I felt uneasy.(我逃过一劫没有受伤,但恐惧一直伴随着我。我好几个月不敢开车。每次经过事故现场,我都感到不安)”可知,作者经过事故现场感到不安是因为那场事故给她留下了恐惧。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“I understood Carson’s true meaning: nature is not just beauty, but a lasting bond between us. It gives us strength and connects us, even when we feel lost.(我明白了卡森的真意:自然不仅是美,更是我们之间持久的联系。它给予我们力量,联结我们,即使在我们感到迷失时)”以及前文提到卡森的话治愈了作者,可知作者想要传达的是自然能够治愈痛苦并带来精神力量。

Researchers report that radiation testing suggests solar cells (电池) made from carbon-based or organic materials could outperform conventional silicon and gallium arsenide (硅和镓砷化物) for generating electricity in space. While previous research focused on how well organic solar cells transformed light to electricity following radiation exposure, the new investigation mainly dug into what happened inside the materials to cause drops in performance.
Silicon semiconductors aren’t stable in space because of proton (质子) radiation coming from the sun. The researchers tested organic solar cells with protons because protons are considered the most damaging particles in space for electronic materials. Space missions often rely on gallium arsenide for its high efficiency and resistance to proton damage, yet it costs a lot and, just like silicon, is heavy and rigid. By comparison, organic solar cells are flexible and lightweight, and this research aims to explore the reliability of organic materials since space projects prefer proven and dependable substances. The test found organic solar cells built with small molecules (分子) suffered no harm from protons even after three years of radiation exposure; on the contrary, versions made of complicated branched molecules lost half their working efficiency.
“We found protons cleave some of the side chains or break them apart, and that leaves an electron trap which worsens the performance of the latter type of organic solar cells,” says Stephen Forrest, the lead corresponding author of the study. These traps grab onto electrons freed by light hitting the cells, preventing them from flowing to the electrodes that harvest the electricity. “You can heal this damage by heating the solar cells. But we might find ways to fill the traps with other atoms, eliminating this problem,” Forrest adds.
It’s possible that sun-facing solar cells could essentially self-heal at temperatures of 100℃ — this warmth is enough to repair the bonds in the lab. But questions remain. For instance, will that repair still take place in space? Is the healing reliable enough for long missions? It may be more straightforward to design the material so that the performance-killing electron traps never appear.
28.What did the new research aim to do?
A.Develop radiation protection methods for cells.
B.Test light-electricity transformation within cells.
C.Look into conventional solar cells’ outer features.
D.Find out inner causes of reduced cell performance.
29.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The imaginary ways to raise cell efficiency.
B.The comparison of different organic molecules.
C.The proton radiation test on organic solar cells.
D.The drawbacks of traditional space power materials.
30.What does the underlined word “cleave” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Split. B.Fix. C.Protect. D.Harvest.
31.Why do researchers consider creating new organic solar cell materials?
A.To avoid harmful electron traps.
B.To speed up lab bond repairing work.
C.To raise space temperature to 1,000℃.
D.To clear doubts about space self-healing.
【答案】28.D 29.C 30.A 31.A
根据第一段中的“...the new investigation mainly dug into what happened inside the materials to cause drops in performance(……新的研究主要探究材料内部发生了什么导致性能下降)”可知,新研究旨在找出电池性能下降的内部原因。
29.主旨大意题。第二段的主旨句为“The researchers tested organic solar cells with protons because protons are considered the most damaging particles in space for electronic materials.(研究人员用质子测试有机太阳能电池,因为质子被认为是太空中对电子材料最具破坏性的粒子。)”
根据画线词“cleave”后面的“or break them apart, and that leaves an electron trap which worsens the performance(或者将它们打断,这就会留下一个电子陷阱,从而降低性能)”可知,画线词与break them apart构成并列选择关系,应含有“劈开、分裂”之意,对应选项中的“Split.”。
根据最后一段中的“It may be more straightforward to design the material so that the performance-killing electron traps never appear.(设计材料时从根源上避免出现损害性能的电子陷阱,或许会是更为直接的方案。)”
D
For thousands of years, human beings have relied on seeds and farmland to grow food. Ploughing (犁地), also known as tilling, is the process of turning over soil to bury weeds, loosen the earth and bring fresh nutrients to the surface. But ploughing, particularly over long periods, can erode (侵蚀) the soil and make it less healthy. This is where conservation-focused farming methods, including no-till farming, come in.
Conventional farming involves sowing a crop into ploughed soil. Ploughing kills weeds that compete with crops for resources, such as water. It also buries weeds and dead plant material deep into the ground, where they are then broken down by bacteria and fungi.
But herbicides, which are chemicals sprayed (喷) to kill weeds, became much cheaper to buy from the mid-20th century. This allowed farmers to kill weeds without cultivating the soil. And it paved the way for the no-till farming movement.
Put simply, no-till farming is farming without disturbing the soil. It gained popularity in the 1950s and 1960s as more people learnt of its potential benefits. These include: limiting soil erosion, keeping soil moisture (水分), protecting the large holes in the soil, and reducing our reliance on machinery such as disc ploughs and rotary hoes, and the fossil fuels needed to operate them.
Supporters of no-till farming claim it boosts the amount of beneficial organisms and nutrients in the soil. They also say no-till farming improves water quality, reduces the risk of pests and diseases, and increases farmers’ income.
However, there is a darker side to no-till farming. No-till farmers must use much more chemicals to destroy weeds that would otherwise be killed by tilling. Research has linked these chemicals with higher rates of cancer, birth defects, infertility and other medical conditions. In addition, research shows soils that haven’t been ploughed contain about 5% less stored carbon than conventionally-farmed soils. Even if no-till farming is better for the environment, it may not produce the yields farmers need to earn an income. One international meta-analysis found farmers’ crop yields fell by about 5%, one to two years after switching from conventional to no-till practices.
32.What can we learn about ploughing?
A.It hardens the soil. B.It improves soil moisture.
C.It is conservation-focused. D.It is double-edged.
33.What is a result of no-till farming according to the text?
A.Fewer weeds. B.Poorer crop harvests.
C.More soil erosion. D.More stored carbon.
34.What is the author’s attitude to no-till farming?
A.Critical. B.Objective. C.Favourable. D.Uncaring.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.No-Till Farming: A Better Choice? B.Healthy Soil: The Key to More Produce
C.Modern Farming: Less Work, More Profit? D.Weed Control: A New Challenge for Farmers
【答案】32.D 33.B 34.B 35.A
根据第一段“Ploughing (犁地), also known as tilling, is the process of turning over soil to bury weeds, loosen the earth and bring fresh nutrients to the surface. But ploughing, particularly over long periods, can erode (侵蚀) the soil and make it less healthy.(犁地,又称耕作,是指翻动土壤以掩埋杂草、松软土壤并使新鲜养分暴露于地表的过程。然而,长期犁地可能会侵蚀土壤,使其变得不健康)”可知,传统耕作是一把双刃剑。
33.细节理解题。根据最后一段“One international meta-analysis found farmers’ crop yields fell by about 5%, one to two years after switching from conventional to no-till practices.(一项国际荟萃分析发现,农民在从传统耕作转为免耕方式后,大约一到两年内作物产量下降了约5%)”可知,免耕农业的结果是农作物产量降低。
根据第一段“For thousands of years, human beings have relied on seeds and farmland to grow food. Ploughing (犁地), also known as tilling, is the process of turning over soil to bury weeds, loosen the earth and bring fresh nutrients to the surface. But ploughing, particularly over long periods, can erode (侵蚀) the soil and make it less healthy. This is where conservation-focused farming methods, including no-till farming, come in.(数千年来,人类一直依靠种子和农田来种植食物。
We all know that our dogs have feelings, and that they can be happy or sad. But, do dogs actually cry real tears when they get sad? Dogs are highly sensitive pets, and they experience a variety of emotions, just like humans. 36 They might just have watery eyes. As far as scientists know, humans are the only species that cry for emotional reasons.
Dogs do “cry” when they’re sad. However, dogs use voices to express feelings rather than having watery eyes. They begin doing this at a young age by crying out for their moms when in trouble. 37 As they get older, dogs may continue this whining (哀鸣) when sad.
Once they have matured, dogs consider their human owners to be the pack leader, or mother figure, and will direct their whining or crying towards them. Many specialists believe dogs suffering from separation anxiety will whine for their mothers. 38
39 They can also be sad, in pain or attempting to let you know that they’re feeling uncomfortable or want something. Also, dogs may howl (嗥叫) occasionally, which is just another form of “crying”. In fact, many experts believe that howling is a dog’s ultimate expression of sadness.
If dogs don’t produce emotional tears, why do they tear up at all? Studies show there is oftentimes a medical reason behind dogs having tears. 40 A dog’s tear ducts (泪管) work somewhat differently. For dogs, the tears or liquid will flow back into the throat and nose rather than from the eyes.
A.This is because dogs are social animals.
B.However, no science proves dogs cry for sadness.
C.Separation anxiety isn’t the only cause of dogs whining.
D.Similarly, when sad, they go to their parent-like person.
E.Virtually, that may be a sign of a serious health condition.
F.The reasons for dogs crying or howling are exactly the same.
G.They learn to make distinct sounds that can be recognized instantly.
根据前文“Dogs are highly sensitive pets, and they experience a variety of emotions, just like humans.(狗是高度敏感的宠物,和人类一样,它们会体会各种各样的情绪。)”以及后文“They might just have watery eyes. As far as scientists know, humans are the only species that cry for emotional reasons.(它们可能只是眼睛湿润。据科学家所知,人类是唯一会因情绪而哭泣的物种。)”可知,前文讲到狗狗有各类情绪,后文说明狗狗不会因悲伤落泪,可推理出空白处说的是狗不会因情绪而哭泣,B选项“However, no science proves dogs cry for sadness.(然而,没有科学证据证明狗会因为悲伤哭泣。)”承接前后文,符合语境。
37.根据前文“They begin doing this at a young age by crying out for their moms when in trouble.(它们很小的时候遇到麻烦就会向妈妈哭喊来表达情绪。)”以及后文“As they get older, dogs may continue this whining (哀鸣) when sad.(随着年龄增长,狗狗难过的时候会继续发出这种哀鸣。)”
38.根据前文“Many specialists believe dogs suffering from separation anxiety will whine for their mothers.(许多专家认为患有分离焦虑的狗狗会向着自己的母亲哀鸣。)”
39.根据后文“They can also be sad, in pain or attempting to let you know that they’re feeling uncomfortable or want something.(它们也可能是悲伤、身体疼痛,或是试图告诉你它们感到不舒服或者想要某物。)”
40.根据前文“Studies show there is oftentimes a medical reason behind dogs having tears.(研究表明狗狗流泪背后往往存在医学方面的原因。)”以及后文“A dog’s tear ducts (泪管) work somewhat differently.(狗的泪管工作方式有所不同。)”

On my way back home on Friday afternoon, I was stressed about a work project with a tight deadline. My husband Eric was on a business trip, so after picking up my 11-year-old son Nathan from school, I’d popped into the grocery store to buy a roast chicken for dinner. I figured that would buy me an extra hour to work on my project, since I wouldn’t have to cook that night.
Now, it was 6:00 p.m., and I was typing away, making good progress. My kids were downstairs watching TV. My eleven-year-old son, Nathan, came into the room and said, “Mom, I’m getting hungry. Can you warm up the chicken now?”
“In a little bit,” I answered without looking up from the computer. Ten minutes later, my older son Jordan came in to tell me he was hungry too. Fifteen minutes after that, my eighteen-year-old daughter Julia made the same request. I exploded: “Every one of you is old enough to put a roast chicken in the microwave. I have to finish the project before 3:00 tomorrow. I would think you would realize that I’m busy and just take some responsibility.”
Twenty minutes later, a paper plate filled with chicken appeared on the desk next to my computer. I smiled sheepishly at the kids. “Sorry I yelled at you guys. I’m just so tired of being ATF around here.”
“ATF?”
“All Things Food. It’s my responsibility to plan the meals, shop for the food, cook the food, and then clean up the dishes afterward. If it’s food-related, it automatically falls to me.” Julia looked at her brothers, “In the following day, the three of us are ATF. Let’s leave Mom alone and go make a plan.”
The next morning, Julia came home, carrying multiple bags of food with her brothers. An hour later, Nathan literally tiptoed into the room to deliver my breakfast to me and smiled, “I hope your work is going well,” he whispered and then tiptoed back downstairs.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
After several productive hours of work, I could smell something cooking. The delicious scent of garlic and tomatoes drifted up to my room, making my stomach rumble. Curious, I saved my project and quietly went downstairs to investigate. I found my three children working together in the kitchen, a scene I had rarely witnessed. Jordan was carefully stirring a large pot of spaghetti sauce while Nathan set the table with surprising focus. Julia, their confident leader, smiled at me and announced, “Lunch will be ready in five minutes, Mom.”
We were about to have lunch when my husband came back. Eric walked in with a suitcase, his eyes lighting up at the scene. “Wow, what a feast!” he laughed, putting down his bag. With visible pride on their faces, the kids rushed to tell him about their “ATF plan,” and I explained how they’d taken over all food tasks. Over lunch, we chatted and laughed. I felt the stress from my project melt away, replaced by overwhelming love for my thoughtful family. As I bit into the tasty soup, I realized that family isn’t just about taking care of others, but letting them take care of you too.

Young children across the globe enjoy playing games of hide and seek. For them, there’s something highly exciting about 41 someone else’s glance and making oneself unable to be seen. They often cover only their eyes with their hands, leaving the rest of their bodies 42 .
For a long time, this ineffective hiding method was 43 as evidence that children are hopelessly “egocentric” (自我中心的) creatures. But our surprising research results in child developmental psychology 44 that idea.
We brought young children aged 2 — 4 into our Minds in Development Lab at USC. Each 45 sat down with an adult who covered her own eyes or 46 . We then asked the child if she could 47 or hear the adult. Surprisingly, children replied that they couldn’t. The same 48 happened when the adult covered her own mouth: 49 children said that they couldn’t 50 to her.
The results were clear: Our young subjects 51 the questions and knew 52 what was asked of them. Their 53 to the questions reflected their true 54 that “I can see you only if you can see me, too.” They simply 55 mutual (相互的) recognition and regard. Our findings suggest when a child “hides” by putting a blanket over her head, it is not a result of egocentrism. In fact, children consider this method effective when others use it.

Matcha is a bright green powder made from green tea. It has long been a delicious addition 56 diverse foods, and its beautiful color and rich flavor can turn simple snacks into tasty 57 (treat).
Matcha actually dates back to China’s Wei and Jin dynasties. It was then transformed into many different forms when 58 (introduce) to other countries. In the book Guangya, author Zhang Yi recorded that tea leaves 59 (process) into cakes first. Then people heated the cakes and pounded them into powder, which was the early form of Matcha.
In the Sui and Tang dynasties, drinking tea grew popular. People ground green tea into grains about half 60 size of a rice kernel (米粒), poured hot water over it and stirred the liquid with a spoon. During the Song Dynasty, tea drinking became an elegant pastime, so powdered tea was developed 61 (far) into a tea art called dian cha.
