He was one of the “fathers of modern Chinese art”. He started learning Chinese painting when he was 9. In 1919, he went to Paris to study drawing. Xu Beihong was famous for painting horses. But he also painted other animals, people and historical scenes . Many of his animal paintings have deeper meanings. In Meeting of Forces in Tokyo, Xu shows a group of lions. They stand for China and other countries fighting against fascism. Xu also taught art. He helped build Chinese art education system.
