For most first-year students at a university or college, August is the month for military training (军训). It offers a good chance to meet our classmates and get ready for the new school life.
Our school’s training took place from August 23 to 29. First, we would make a blackboard newspaper for our new classroom. When I found out that I was in charge of (负责) this project, I was nervous. Could I manage to both complete this project and prepare for the closing concert? What if my classmates wouldn’t follow my instructions?
The project began on August 24. The three other girls in the group have different abilities. My group gave up our lunch break so that we would have more time to work. One girl in my group asked about my design, saying that we should shorten the text and leave more space for pictures. The arguments (争论) between us made me sad from time to time, but whenever there was an argument, I tried to stay calm. I thought hard about whether or not to take her suggestions and then made some changes. I found that she had a lot of good ideas. As time went by, even when I couldn’t take part in practice. I wasn’t worried about leaving the project to her.
Finally, it was time for our project to be shown. Our teacher said that no matter what the results might be, our efforts (努力) would not be wasted.
Our class finally won first prize in the competition. Our teacher was right. The result was not the most important. I had never seen a class with such a strong sense of group honor, and at that moment, I realized that I was working with a great group of students.

I traveled to Blefuscu, where the King was very kind to me.
One day I went for a walk on the beach. I was feeling sad and unhappy, and I was thinking about England. Suddenly I saw a boat in the water. It was a real ship’s boat, big enough for someone of my size! I was very excited, and I ran into the sea. I swam out to the boat, and climbed onto it. Then I took the boat back to the shore, and tied it up carefully.
I told the King of Blefuscu about the boat.
“I’m lonely here,” I told him. “I want to go back to England. Maybe I can use that boat to go home, if you will help me. It’ll be a long journey, but I’m sure I can do it.”
“Very well,” he said, “I’ll help you, Gulliver. I’ll give you food and drink to put in the boat.”
The King ordered his men to prepare my boat. After a few days everything was ready.
I sailed away from Blefuscu. The sea was very big and lonely. After some days, I saw a large ship, and I followed it. It was an English ship, and one of the sailors saw me. They stopped, and took me on board. They were going to England, and they took me with them.
The captain was a friendly man. I told him about my adventures (冒险) in Lilliput and Blefuscu. He did not believe me.
“Little men,” he laughed. “You tell a good story, sir,” he said, “but it’s an impossible story, all the same.” And he laughed again.
“Then where do you think this came from?” I asked him. I put my hand in my pocket, and took out one of the tiny sheep from Blefuscu. I showed it to the captain. Now he believed my story!
28. Why did Gulliver want to leave Blefuscu?
___________________________________________________________________________________________
29. How did Gulliver make the captain believe him?

Teenagers often experience ups and downs in emotions (情感). Sometimes negative (消极的) emotions from present schoolwork and worries about the future are with us.
___31___ They even influence a person’s confidence greatly and make it hard to realize dreams. For example, people who think “I can’t do this” or “I doubt my skills” may fail to finish their tasks. This is one reason why it’s important to know some negative emotions and find ways that change them for the better.
___32___ Sometimes they can be so sudden and powerful that it’s hard to know exactly what you’re experiencing. The best way is to stop for a short time and think for a moment when you notice yourself feeling unhappy. Try to name what emotion it is and say to yourself, “I feel angry, sad, or worried.” ___33___
If you’re unhappy but aren’t quite sure why, it can help to talk to someone you trust, like a close friend or family members who can keep a secret. ___34___
If you have much difficulty talking about your feelings or you think people cannot understand you, keep a diary, draw or paint, or do something else that helps you get through hard times. Anyway, expressing your feelings in a proper way instead of hiding them deep in your heart is a good choice! If you spend time finding out more about your feelings, you will become skilled at solving the emotional problems as they come up.
A. It takes practice to know about emotions.
B. Talking things over can also help deal with your feelings.
C. You should always believe in yourself when you want to give up.
D. Devoting yourself to something positive can help lift your mood.
E. When negative thoughts and feelings appear, they may be harmful to many parts of life.
