Norwegian researchers followed 53,556 women and men over 15 years. They wanted to see if a sense of humour could affect how long people live. The team used a detailed questionnaire to measure different parts of humour — like how people think, socialize, and feel about funny situations. They then looked at deaths from several diseases, including heart disease, infections, cancer, and lung disease. The results showed that women who scored high in the “thinking” part of humour had: •A 48% lower risk of dying from any cause, •A 73% lower risk of dying from heart disease, •And an 83% lower risk of dying from infections. For men, the benefit was only seen in infections — those with high humour scores had a 74% lower risk of dying from them.Researchers think this difference between men and women might be because men’s sense of humour slightly decreased as they got older. Also, the social and emotional parts of humour didn’t show any clear effect on how long people lived. According to Sven Svebak, a professor who co-authored the study, the thinking part of humour is a stable personality trait (特性).It affects how people understand everyday events. This can help reduce social conflicts and stress and prevent stress hormones like cortisol(皮质醇) from rising too much. When cortisol stays high for a long time, it weakens the immune system. Although genes partly decide our sense of humour, it’s also shaped by life experiences.Svebak says children who don’t see adults using humour to deal with problems may not use it themselves when they grow up.But don’t worry if your childhood wasn’t filled with laughter — studies show it’s never too late to learn to laugh at life’s absurdities (荒谬). 28.How did the researchers carry out their study?( ) A.By assigning tasks. B.By doing an interview. C.By doing field research. D.By designing questions. The team used a detailed questionnaire ...feel about funny situations. 29.Which part of humour has clearly affected people’s life according to the study?( ) A.The social part. B.The cultural part. C.The thinking part. D.The emotional part. According to Sven Svebak ...rising too much. 30.What can be inferred about our sense of humour according to Svebak?( ) A.Genes alone play a key role. B.It can be acquired when we grow up. C.It must be developed since childhood. D.It is rarely shaped by life experiences. Although genes partly decide ...when they grow up. 31.What can be a suitable title for the text?( ) A.Laugh Lots, Live Longer B.Art of Growing Young C.The Best Medicine for Us D.Be Funny or Die Young 解析:A 标题归纳题。 D There exist cruel wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, so it’s not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humour just to help us go through difficult times in our lives.Putting a smile on someone’s face when you know they are feeling depressed, as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my heart. How would you feel if you could not joke around with wife, husband, child, co-worker, neighbor, close friend, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don’t know the person I’m joking around with.My Grandma always found humour in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is a common manner to speak to others that are around you. I know of a few people that don’t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say.Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their faces. They don’t get the joke that makes others laugh.I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke? Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control.Without humour, we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness and a little light in our lives. Therefore, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together. 32.According to the passage, why is humour necessary and essential?( ) A.It can lift people’s spirits. D.It makes people more confident. 33.What does the underlined phrase “busting a gut” in the third paragraph mean?( ) A.Keeping silent. B.Speaking loud. B.Satisfied. C.Indifferent. But the one thing they have never had in abundance (大量) is money.Having a single parent with a low-paid job, they never have pocket money. They wear hand-me-downs store clothing. But they never complain and never cry out for something Tim can’t afford. Tim has many wonderful memories of his daughters. However, there is one that stands out. When Hope was 10 years old and Hannah was 8 years old, they were looking for a gift to give Tim for Christmas.“Dad often gave us gifts. Now I think we should also give one to him,” Hope suggested.Hannah said it was a good idea. And they wondered what gift they should give their dad. After thinking for long, they thought of the National Geographic magazines.Their dad always loved the magazine. But because money was especially tight (紧的) that year, Tim had not been able to subscribe (订阅) to it.“The magazines sold in the bookstore aren’t that cheap.Well, at least, we can buy one and give it to Dad as a Christmas gift,” Hope said. Not having any money of their own, Hope and Hannah then wondered how to solve the problem. Finally, they decided to find part-time jobs in the small neighborhood to make money.First, they needed to be permitted by their dad. When they shared their decision one night, Tim thought they wanted to buy some toys, candy or something else for themselves.Since he couldn’t give them pocket money and thought part-time jobs could be helpful to a kid, he agreed. But he didn’t want them to be too tired, so he reminded them, “When you find you dislike the jobs, you can just give up.” Hope and Hannah smiled and nodded, and Tim thought they surely wouldn’t stick to their part-time jobs for long. The next morning, Hope and Hannah walked around the neighborhood to look for possible part-time jobs. With the money, Hope and Hannah rushed to a nearby bookstore. The next morning, Hope and Hannah walked around the neighborhood to look for possible part-time jobs. They went from door to door. When seeing each neighbor, they briefly talked about their wish.Touched by their wish, the nice neighbors offered them simple jobs, like regularly watering their flowers and walking their dogs.Hope and Hannah excitedly accepted all the work and then devoted themselves to it.Although the work wasn’t that easy, they continued doing it without complaining. When Christmas approached, they found they had saved enough money. With the money, Hope and Hannah rushed to a nearby bookstore.Looking at the magazines, they were excited and picked up the latest. Then, they had the magazine wrapped tightly in beautiful paper. When Christmas arrived, Hope and Hannah proudly handed the gift to their dad, and he was surprised and confused. When Tim found what was inside, he asked, “Did you spend all your hard-earned money on the magazine?” Hope and Hannah just smiled.Tim was so moved and gave each of them a big hug.Although he was poor, he felt he was one of the richest fathers in the world.
