After a long day, Zhang Tian finally got back to① his small room,
feeling tired. He had started working at seven in the morning and it was
eight in the evening now.He had to prepare his lessons② for the
following day③. [1]This is a typical day④ for Zhang Tian. Coming
to Guizhou Province to teach has been quite an experience⑤ for him.
Zhang Tian graduated from⑥ university and got a teacher’s
certificate⑦ last year. His parents, like most, hoped he would go to a
big city to find a teaching job⑧. Likewise, his friends all left his
hometown for work in Shanghai or Beijing. Zhang Tian felt differently,
however. He wanted to start a new lifestyle⑨. [2]He had met
wonderful teachers from small villages during his early school years and he
was inspired by them to go and teach where he was needed the most. For
that reason he applied, and became a volunteer teacher in a village
school.[3]Bringing with him lots of books, clothes, and two pairs
of trainers, Zhang Tian travelled to the village with an eager heart
⑩. He imagined all sorts of exciting things about living independently⑪
and teaching in a village.
句又是一个主从复合句, where he was needed the most为where引导的
Bringing with him lots of books, clothes, and two pairs

[4]However, not everything lived up to⑫ Zhang Tian’s
hopes. The school was much smaller than he had expected, with only
three classrooms.[5]In front of the classrooms, there was a
playground which got dusty⑬ on windy days⑭ and muddy on rainy days
⑮. Living in the village was also more challenging than he had
thought.[6]The power and water supplies⑯ were unstable, so he
could only shower every three or four days⑰, and he had to learn how
to cook. The thought of leaving once flashed through his mind⑱, but
he quickly gave up the idea and found ways to deal with⑲ the
challenges.
The school had just three teachers and Zhang Tian was the only
English teacher. The other two local teachers were responsible for⑳
maths and Chinese. To make school life healthier and livelier for his
students, Zhang Tian introduced more subjects to the school — music,
art and PE. It is not surprising that PE is the kids’ favourite subject!
Their school lives are now more attractive and interesting, and they
enjoy playing football㉑ in the playground, as well as㉒ singing songs
they’ve learnt. The school is now full of laughter㉓ and music.Zhang
Tian is planning to organise the first-ever school concert! Everyone is
very excited.
Zhang Tian’s first year is almost over.[7] It has been a tough
year㉔, but he has enjoyed working with the children.[8]What made
him feel satisfied was that his students were able to read, speak and write
in English㉕, and they became more confident㉖ in learning. Besides
teaching, Zhang Tian also brought changes to the village. He contacted
charity organisations about rebuilding the playground and setting up㉗ a
library, and helped the villagers sell local products online.[9]The
contribution he made to the village was great,
so he became very popular㉘ among the villagers and they treated him as
㉙ one of them. The village is like his second home㉚ now.Although he
had only intended to stay for one year, he now feels ready to stay for
another year.[10]He feels so happy that he followed his heart㉛ when
choosing what to do with his life, even though it may not be what others
expected of him.
[9]句中he made to the village为定语从句,修饰先行词The
that/which在从句中作made的宾语;so引导结果状语从句。
[10]句中so ...that ...
句中, when 引导时间状语从句,省略了主语he 和谓语动词was;
what to do ...

For the better part of the last year, members

help seniors deal with smartphone difficulties. Every Wednesday, a
couple of students from the 90-member Key Club have been visiting
seniors at the Lorain Road Center with positive results.

“Our Teen Tech Support program is important for teens because it
gives them a sense of purpose along with valuable life advice and
knowledge from older people,”Fairview Park Senior Life Office
Director Laura Brondos said. “For seniors, it’s important because they
can share their wisdom and stories, and learn how to change their
passwords or connect their hearing aids (助听器) via Bluetooth.”

“The response (反应) from the seniors has been very

Although Key Club students need to complete 20 hours of community
service to get graduation seals (印章) for their volunteer work,
Brondos said most of the teenagers are volunteering just for the fun of
it. “Helping the seniors with their tech challenges is an experience that
really makes everyone in the community feel more connected to each
other,” Fairview High School senior Nicole Giang said. “It’s great to
know that the seniors have people to depend on, and it’s great how
volunteers connect one-on-one with so many wonderful community
members.”

More than sitting down with the seniors to hear their stories and
advice, Giang said she always walks away feeling like they’ve helped her
more than she has helped them.

together,” Brondos said. “It’s a very valuable program for all.”

A study showed when children who were
picky (挑剔的) eaters got to choose their own food (school dinners)
at lunchtime, they were less picky in what they ate, compared with a
packed lunch. This is the first time that lunchtime food behaviors in
picky children have been studied outside of the home, and away from
family influence.
In the study, picky children were less likely than non-picky eaters
to have meat or fish sandwich fillings in packed lunches, and more likely
to have fillings such as marmite, peanut butter or cheese spread in packed

lunches. However, when picky children ate school dinners, they did
not avoid meat, fish or fruit anymore. They ate different kinds of foods
and made more similar choices to those non-picky eaters.
It is well-known that picky children eat fewer vegetables and fruits

children to eat more vegetables and fruits are favored.
